The questions: 1. What year did you start in transportation? 2. What do you miss most from that year or era? 3. What would you like to see in transportation in 2028!

Char Van Abbema

1. 2013, billing and Carrier Resources - Allen Lund Company. 2. Since it has only been five years, the only significant thing I miss is my four little boys, I blinked and I have teenagers! 3. Would like to see automated bar code/digital proof of delivery and technology aiding safety to end all fatalities on the road.

Dave Peppin

1. I started as a transportation carrier with Cargo-Master in 1998. 2. I miss the pager that we used for after hour emergencies…classic old school communication! 3. I would love to see better attitudes from dispatchers and drivers toward brokers…there seems to be too many “short fused” folks out there nowadays.

Eric Bowers

1. 1993, loading double bottom trailers with a front end loader, moving to rail and lake freighter. 2. Operating heavy equipment and moving large scale tonnages across the Great Lakes and Canada. The people were easy to deal with as well. 3. Respect and civility for everyone in the transportation industry.

Jeff Kleyn

1. I started in November of 1995 at Cargo-Master. 2. I miss the long phone cords we used to have! 3. Better communication with carriers, some are hard to get hold of.

Jeffrey Van Abbema

1. In 2006, for a transportation broker called Cargo-Master. Hired initially to assist in billing and accounts receivable, but transitioned into dispatch after about nine months. 2. Three kids in diapers and starting a brand new career. 3. 65’ climate controlled trailers powered by amphibious tractors.

Jennifer Cole

1. Cargo-Master. I was hired to help answer phones and make check calls. Look at me now!!!!!! 2. I miss the value of a good old fashion handshake and agreement. 3. Getting back to the basics. Sometimes technology can make it MORE complicated than it really needs to be.

Jennifer Bates

1. 2013 2. The Boston Marathon bombing, the birth of Prince George, the annoying word “selfie” became Oxford Dictionary’s “Word of the Year”, and of course who can forget the Miley Cyrus “twerking” incident at the music awards. All sorts of crazy in 2013! 3. Stabilized rates, more relationships with carriers and shippers.

Kate Kade

1. 1982, Brown Corporation, Ionia, MI – scheduling and shipping/receiving. 2. My 28 year old body :). 3. My backyard (retirement).

Kathy Hendel

1. I started in the billing department in May, 1998 at Cargo Master Inc. 2. Being 20 years younger, of course and camping with my family in New York in the Finger Lakes region and the Adirondack Mountains. 3. For myself, hopefully retired and enjoying time with my grandchildren and family.

Leonora Winegar

1. 1987, ABF (Arkansas Best Freight), tariffs, cash exceptions and overcharges. 2. The 80’s – my big hair and the t-card board…..just joking, we are still using it in this office. 3. Real-time satellite drone tracking with current conditions, real-time ETA based on weather, road conditions, traffic, and driver’s historic trending pace and hours.

Lisa Budwick

1. I started in transportation in July of 2014 as a broker’s assistant. 2. 2014, I miss my son and our puppy being so little and less mouthy. 3. I would like to see better communication all around.

Mark Hill

1. 1987. 2. I can’t remember that year. 3. End of ELDs.

Matt Peterson

1. Does delivering race programs for Muskegon Race Course (horse track) count? If so, then I started in 1995 running throughout Grand Rapids with 25-30 stops. Otherwise, I started with very little knowledge of the industry in 2012 with Allen Lund Company. 2. Being 50 lbs. lighter! 3. Teleportation. Dispatch a shipment to the nearest terminal and POOF it's at the receiver. No more dealing with log books! Either that or nationwide dedicated truck lanes to end congestion and improve transit for trucks.

Richard Sandwick

1. 2001, general manager of a moving company - sales, employee scheduling, claims, etc. 2. My college days. 3. Better roads/infrastructure.

Stephanie Harris

1. 2015, started at Allen Lund Company in the accounting department. 2. Miss my motivation, passion, and ability to stay fit. 3. Streamline scheduling and all receivers using the same scheduling platform.

Teresa Crews

1. 1996, Brunswick Corporation in shipping and receiving. 2. I miss the gas price of $1.22 per gallon and TV shows like E.R, Friends, and Home Improvement.

Patricia Mcdonald

1. I started at ALC in the billing department on May 9, 2016 (my one and only job in transportation). 2. Better roads to travel on when visiting and enjoying time with my grandchildren and family.

The Houston office started in January, 2017 and I hired my first employee, Azad in May. We worked in a temporary space until we moved into our office in July, 2017. We hired Ellie right before Hurricane Harvey hit in late August. Due to the hurricane our office complex flooded and we were forced to work from AZ’s kitchen table for four months. As you can imagine, 2017 was an interesting year. We moved back into our office in January, 2018 and have since hired Chingis and Leo. We have put 2017 behind us and are having a great 2018. Everyone at Allen Lund Company has been great to us and we look forward to growing the ALC name in Houston! Let’s meet the Houston Team! Michael Keep – Branch Manager: I am a graduate from Mississippi State University with a BBA in Management. I am a season ticket holder for Bulldog football and also love Bulldog baseball/basketball. My wife, Cyndi and I have two children, Mary Connally Catherine, age five and Ann Amelia Quinn, age three. I love spending time with my girls and playing golf. Azad Mamedov – Operations Manager: AZ celebrated his first year at the Houston office in May, however, brings twenty years of operational excellence to the table. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Foreign Languages in Baku, Azerbaijan, as well as an International Business degree from Louisiana Tech University. In his much deserved free time, AZ enjoys spending time with his many friends, family, and watching basketball (Rockets). Proud father of two, Aydin, who is studying Physics at University of Houston and Leyla, who is headed to LSU to study Human Resource Management. Ellie Corry – Transportation Broker: Ellie graduated from the University of Houston with a Supply Chain & Logistics degree. She just celebrated a three year anniversary with her boyfriend, Jake in May. Ellie is an animal lover who enjoys gardening and playing darts. Not to mention, she is our office fitness promoter.

Chingis Zhanturiyev – Transportation Broker: Chingis wears many hats in our office, doing everything from booking loads to handling our LTL customers. Chingis graduated from the University of Colorado with a Political Science degree. He is a true outdoorsman who enjoys hiking, biking, rock climbing, running, and basically anything in the sun. Leo Escamilla – Transportation Broker: Leo is the newest member of our team, however, not new to the industry, having 14 years of experience. Leo is a graduate from the University of Houston with a Supply Chain & Logistics degree. Leo and his wife, Kristina recently welcomed a new addition to their family, Joseph Aaron, who was born on May 18, 2018. They also have Thomas, five years old, who will be starting kindergarten this year as well as Araceli, who will be three in June.

St. Louis is home to the Arch, Cardinals, and the Blues. St. Louis is also home to toasted raviolis and gooey butter cake. We also like to boast that we are Eddie’s favorite office to visit  . Our office has grown a lot since the last time we were featured in FreightVine. Here is a small introduction to our team. Dawn Davenport has been with ALC for 16 years. Dawn has two daughters, Britney, eight and Brilee, seven. Dawn and her husband, Steve currently have second jobs as taxi drivers for the girls various activities. Dawn enjoys hanging out with friends at the pool and working on her landscaping. Jason Poulter has been with ALC for four years as a Business Development Specialist. He is married to his wife, Marissa and they have a daughter, Lexa (three years old) and a baby on the way. Jason enjoys spending time with his family outdoors, golfing, hunting, visiting different breweries, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. Leon Ochoa is going on 17 years with ALC. He worked in the Chicago office before transferring to the St. Louis office. He is a loyal fan to all of the teams in Chicago, except the White Sox. When he is not at work he enjoys hanging out with friends, playing softball, trivia, some bingo, and indoor soccer. Lorine Gonzalez is our accounting clerk. She has been with Allen Lund Company since March 2017. Lorine (Lori) has two children, Tanya and Miguel, and one granddaughter, Sara. Lori loves the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoys Cardinals games with her sisters and other family members. Lori is a great sports fan and loves watching sporting events on television. Lori in her spare time, besides watching the Cardinals, enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and taking walks.

Aimee Hall has lived in St. Louis her entire life. She has been with her husband for 24 years; they met when she was 21 and will be married for 14 years in October. She is still friends with most of her childhood/high school friends, her oldest friend, Andie (who we have all met) have known each other for 40 years. In her spare time, Aimee volunteers at a food pantry. She has worked in customer service all of her life, but wanted to be a psychologist. Her hobbies include working in the yard, reading, watching comedies, hanging out with family, and friends. She is an avid and die hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. JD Tillotson was born and raised in Columbia, MO. He came to St. Louis in 2003 on an academic scholarship and attended Meramec Junior College and then the University of Missouri St. Louis. For a while he thought he would become a professional student but after he decided he had spent too much time in college he finally got out and ended up with a two year degree in General Business and Bachelors in Logistics and Operations Management. During college and for a period of time afterwards, he worked as a manager at an Irish Pub downtown. He stumbled upon ALC through a friend and has been here since 2014. Time is flying by. It’s been great! He got married last September and enjoys time with his beautiful wife and small family (dog and cat).

On honeymoon, hiking the cliffs in Maui, HI

Sal Valia is from St. Louis, MO. He likes to hang out with his friends, go to concerts, and play indoor and sand volleyball.

Erin Murphy has been working at the Allen Lund Company for almost two years. Erin moved to St. Louis right out of college to start her job here. She graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in Marketing. She has a crazy lab- mix puppy named Wilson that takes up most of her time. When she’s not busy chasing him around she likes to take trips with family/friends, go to as many ball games as she can (GO CUBS!!), and is always down for a good bingo night!

Zach Anderson has been with the Allen Lund Company for almost four years, currently as a Business Development Specialist. Outside of the office he enjoys traveling, golfing, and hanging out with his dog, Bailey.

Josh Rivera has just recently started with our office. He is a fresh out of college musician who loves to travel and learn about astronomy and astrophysics. His favorite place to visit is his home country Puerto Rico.

Rachelle Miller has been with ALC for a year. In her spare time she gives piano lessons and enjoys playing video games. She and her husband, Justin enjoy trying new restaurants.

Tammi McEuen is from St. Louis and has been with Allen Lund Company for four years. She loves her job but when she is off she enjoys hanging out with her family and friends, attending concerts, and being lazy. She likes anything that is by or in the water.

Catching Up with Kati Issaians . . . My name is Kati Issaians and I am the newest member to join the HR team. I am very excited to lead ALC’s Health & Wellness efforts and partner with you to help create the best possible work experience and support your benefits needs! I love helping people and am passionate about them enjoying life inside and outside of the office. I look forward to learning more about each and every one of you to understand how I can help design a wellness program that best meets your needs. To give some background into whom I am and what I am about, I am originally from San Diego, CA and had every intention of leaving “America’s Finest City” to attend Marquette University in Wisconsin. Before trading my sandals for snow boots, my friend encouraged me to check out California Lutheran University outside of Los Angeles, CA. I toured the campus and my instincts told me CLU was where I was supposed to be. It was at CLU 13 years ago, where I met my would-be husband David and one of my professors gave me advice that has stuck with me over the years: “Work for a company with good core values above everything else.” After college, I worked for Progressive Insurance Company where I fell in love with all things people and culture. While working for Progressive, I earned my MBA, concentrating in HR. I’ve worked at eHarmony where some of my fondest memories were talking to Dr. and Mrs. Warren who were in the office almost every day. I was enamored with his story of how he started, grew, and saved his business (he came out of retirement right before I started); all while having a loving marriage and raising a family. Most recently, I worked on the HR team at Lieberman Research Worldwide (LRW), a business that grew out of one man’s dream to move to California and help businesses solve interesting challenges. Soon after starting at LRW, I led a wellness committee, and together, we built LRW’s Health & Wellness Program. I loved witnessing small wins such as seeing people engage in walking meetings, eating lunch anywhere besides their desk, and refilling their water bottles. Bigger wins included employees taking time out of their busy days to enjoy wellness activities such as onsite massages, participating in Fitbit challenges, leaving the office in time for dinner, and prioritizing their health over work by staying home when sick.

What brought me to ALC? I accidentally found this job and it still feels a bit unreal. David and I now joke because we had numerous conversations about how it would be next to impossible for me to find an HR role so close to home (my commute previously was 60-90 minutes each way), working for a good company on a progressive team, but here I am! I reached out to Pam on LinkedIn after running across the HR Generalist job description and sent the following message: Hi Pam, I hope you're having a great day! I'm putting together an HR generalist JD for my growing team at LRW. I'm using postings on LinkedIn to assist my process. I LOVED the "What our HR team is all About" opening paragraph. I saw that your company is in La Cañada, and I couldn't help but apply. :) Jeremy and I had a call the following morning, I soon talked to Carrie and then interviewed with the team in person that Friday. I was very candid with Pam, and I immediately trusted her. Even before an offer was extended, my instincts and this odd calmness told me ALC was where I was supposed to be. I picked up my daughter from daycare, and drove to Century City to speak with my boss about this potential opportunity. Ellie slept on my lap, while I resigned from LRW. On Valentine’s Day, I accepted the position at ALC. Everyone I have met here has been so welcoming and kind. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to learn more about the culture and all the great work that you do each day. My biggest hope is that I’ll be able to help you all enjoy this thing we call work just a little bit more than you already do, and feel well in the process! David and I live in Montrose with our son Christian (5), daughter Ellie (19 months) and dog Jakey.

Jose Rivera (Orlando) and wife, Cristine welcomed daughter, Madelynn ~ weighing 7 lbs., 3 oz.

As an example, they had to explore Carsland looking at signs to find a word to complete a phrase and use those words to decode a question. Then they had to come up with the answer which was MOTOR OIL. Their team advanced in rank each time they played and came in 18 th out of 123 teams. Go Street Rats!

#2. On May 31 st , it was Harry Balam’s last day in the office before embarking on a new adventure for LA Sales and ALC: on-site managed services for citrus and grape grower/shipper for one of our largest customers, Sun Pacific Marketing! While he’ll only be six miles away in Pasadena, we’ll miss him like he’ll be a world away! Using his last opportunity to prank someone in the office before his departure, I was the guinea pig he targeted. In classic Harry fashion, he tricked me with the old “hey, this cake smells funny” prank, and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Frosting up your nose is funny, but not fun! We want to thank Matt Christ for his three months on-site at Sun Pacific and all he did to get this project launched while also trying to keep up with his other BDS responsibilities and booking of business ~ we welcomed him back into the office on June 1 st as we bid farewell to Harry, who will take the reins for at least one year. Thank you both for your dedication and hard work! Tracey Lewin

It’s with great excitement that I introduce you to a new way to experience Wellness @ ALC! We have a fresh take on the intranet's Wellness Site and would love to use this space to co-create a healthier work environment at ALC. The page opens with the familiar wellness benefits that our company graciously offers to support our wellness journeys. Peruse the blog and ALC Wellness Pinterest board and add a comment if the post speaks to you. I’d love to hear your suggestions for future blog posts as I’ll post new content here each week. Please send me your wellness photos, original recipes, and program testimonials and I’ll happily post them as well! The biggest takeaway from your feedback on the ALC Wellness Survey is that total wellness is important to everyone. Wellness means something different to each of us and it’s apparent (from your feedback) that the majority of us can use a little motivation. I’d love to be able to help you meet or exceed your wellness goals, whatever they may be. Unsure where to start? You can complete "A Wellness Contract with Myself" and document your S.M.A.R.T. Wellness Goals and choose an accountability partner. Make a promise to yourself to be healthier and take the steps you need to reach your goals. Today is a great day to start! Are you open to a challenge that involves your whole team? We have a few offices engaging in weight-loss challenges. Our HR team is down 20 pounds over the past month and Little Rock is down over 40 pounds in only 3 weeks!

Congratulations to team E.L.D. ( E xercise, L ose D a weight or E ating L ess D onuts/ D oritos/ D anishes) from the Orlando office for winning ALC’s “Mission: Possible! Wellness challenge!! Led to victory by Captain Shaun Leiker, team E.L.D. included Alberto Caballero, Ian Blake, Michael LaMay and Steven King. E.L.D. will celebrate with a deep sea fishing trip for a healthy, team building activity. Below are the reasons that sealed the deal for this AMAZING grand prize. Mission 1: Exercising with the Magic Carpet, Lil Mermaid, Triceps, Pushups, Carpal Tunnel, Peg Leg, Invisible Chair and Spinal Stretch. Shaun: Almost every exercise listed will be used in a day on the water, fishing. Mission 2: Drinking water, eating well, eating early, and not at our desks as well as the exercises from week one. Shaun: The boat leaves early and we have a road trip to get there. Florida is HOT this time of year and we will need to stay hydrated and again the exercises will be used. Mission 3: Medical, dental, vision, BMI and eat an apple a day. Shaun: As Red Snapper is now in season and what you catch can be taken home, we will be eating healthy since Red Snapper contains Selenium, Vitamin A, Shaun: Going fishing together takes care of that but I know someone would say that you are just standing around. Well, to continue the challenge amongst the team, I will ask everyone if they want to throw in $10 - $20 into a pot and the first one to catch a fish that is a keeper gets half of the pot and the one with the biggest fish (weight or length) gets the other half. This way, no one will be sitting or standing around since they will be working their lines. “An active session of deep sea fishing can burn up to 400 calories in a day.” Mission 5: Reduce screen time . Shaun: No screens on the ocean and when you go offshore you lose cell service, so we are keeping true to the mission. Again, congrats to Shaun, Alberto, Ian, Michael and Steven! We look forward to seeing pictures of your trip! Potassium, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Mission 4: A team building exercise .

Below is a picture of Tyler Bailey in Little Rock, ALC’s first “Official” Wellness Ambassador. Mark Zitzer said, “I want to step back and recognize this guy right here - say hi to Tyler Bailey. He is our office’s ‘Wellness Ambassador’ by making himself and others healthier. In addition to a financial incentive from Allen Lund Company; within the past year Tyler has kicked his tobacco habit and has the entire office eating healthier, exercising more, and losing weight. Wish us luck on our current 10% weight loss challenge, so far we are all on pace to achieve our goal!! ALC corporate hooked Tyler up with a sweet badge and movie tickets for his role as ‘Wellness Ambassador’!! Enjoy your night out, we are proud of you!!”

I look forward to engaging with you via our Wellness blog, email, phone calls, and in person. Wellness @ ALC, It’s About You! In GREAT health, Kati
