Welcome

Personal Financial Management

Welcome to Personal Financial Management (PFM), a valuable feature of Murphy Bank’s Online Banking. PFM can help you understand more about where you spend money, track your day-to-day financial life, and establish budgets to reach your personal financial goals. Although PFM is not designed to replace a professional financial advisor, it can help you gather much of the information you need to review when meeting with a financial advisor, planning for your financial success, and preparing your taxes. The PFM concept has been around for more than twenty years. Software packages, like Intuit’s Quicken or Microsoft Money, helped collect and categorize financial transactions with data from different financial accounts. Traditionally, PFM usage has had limited success, with usage from only a small percentage of consumers. The biggest challenge has been entering data for transactions since it was very laborious. And today, with more ways to move money, debit card usage, and online activity, there are more transactions than ever to enter and track. Murph is pleased to offer a state-of-the-art Personal Financial Management service that is fully integrated with United’s Online Banking. And now, with improved processes and strategic technology partnerships, entering and categorizing transactions is easier than ever. About This Guide We have created this guide to help you get the most out of the Personal Financial Management service. The first section offers helpful definitions and explanations of the PFM process. The second section walks you through the steps for using PFM within Murph’s Online Banking.

Welcome: Personal Financial Management

Understanding PFM Supporting Your Financial Plan

The main goal of PFM is to help you understand where your money is coming from and where it is going. PFM focuses on why transactions happen. This involves adding a reason, or category, to each transaction in your account register. Once the proper category is assigned to each transaction, you can run simple, easy-to-read reports about your income and expenses. You can take PFM to the next level by establishing budgets for your spending. For example, you can enter a targeted monthly budget amount for each of the categories you track. Then at the end of the month, you can run a report comparing each category where you have a budgeted amount against what you actually spent. If you would like, our system can suggest a budget for you after reviewing enough data. To help you gain a more complete view of your fiances, we can securely link your accounts at other financial institutions across the country. This can include your checking or savings accounts at other instutions, as well as data from hundreds of credit card providers.. Before we launched PFM, Online Banking offered (and still does) a great view of all your banking transactions. For example, we can show you the date, amount and name of a merchant where you used your debit or credit card just by looking at the “Accounts Details” page.

Our Personal Financial Management service is fully integrated into Murph’s Online Banking which, in most cases, allows transactions to be automatically assigned to a finance category. Common categories include “Gas/Auto Expense,” “Entertainment,” “Medical Expenses,” “Rent,” and “Utilities.” If a transaction is not automatically assigned a category or if it’s not assigned to the category that best matches that transaction, the category can be manually assigned or edited for each transaction. Each category has a corresponding icon assigned to it to help quickly identify a transaction’s finance category. These icons are displayed next to each transaction in the Account Details page.

Getting started with PFM is rather easy and is explained in detail in the second part of this guide. As you prepare to get started with PFM, please remember that you can use just one or all of the PFM features. Some users will be happy with assigning categories and running basic reports, and others will enjoy using PFM to manage all aspects of your assets and liabilities. 11a 12a 13a 14a 15a 16a 17a 18a 19a 20a 11b 12b 13b 14b 15b 16b 17b 18b 19b 20b 1d 2d 3d 4d 5d 6d 7d 8d 9d J1 A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1 G1 H1 I1 Click an account to view the Account Details page . Getting Started

Online Banking Home Page Personal Financial Management is easily accessed from the home page (Accounts Summary) within Online Banking. There are five widgets within the Personal Financial Management service; Net Worth, Budget, Spending, Trends, and Debts. These widgets help you review and manage the data within PFM. Although you are enrolled in Online Banking, you will need to activate the PFM features. To do this, simply select any of the five widget titles and an enrollment screen will display. After reviewing and accepting the Terms and Conditions, you can proceed and begin using PFM.

Different links appear on the home page, which take you to interactive widgets with various information. • Net Worth : Sum up your assets and debts and view pie charts to see how funds are allocated. • Budget : Track your monthly finances by adding targets to help you better manage your expenses. • Spending : See how you’re spending money in a visual representation. • Trends : Track your habits even further to see how you spend your money over time. • Debts : Lets you see all your debts at once to gage how additional payments or payoffs affect your finances.

Your First PFM Session Once enrolled in our PFM feature, you will notice categories in the account detail information. Our system is designed to securely view your transactions and suggest categories. For your accounts enabled from our institution you can immediately run reports and get your first glimpse into your financial spending. There may be a few transactions where we will need additional information: • Uncategorized Transactions - A icon indicates our system did not have enough data to suggest a category. To add a category simply click the and choose from the category list that appears to the right. • Checks - Unless your check was scanned at a merchants location our PFM system will most likely not know why you wrote a check. Just like the transactions above click the icon and select a category to assign the transaction. • ATM Withdrawals - Some consumers classify an ATM withdrawal for entertainment but however you can assign a category to the withdrawal by clicking the icon and assigning a category. With your categories successfully in place click on the spending widget and congratulations you’ve created your first report within PFM. The next few pages will walk you through the details of setting up your PFM experience, including adding other accounts and more categorization options.

Managing Categories The first step is to assign catagories to the transactions in your primary checking account. You can add catagories multiple ways. Automatic Categorization Our PFM system can look at the data from debit card and credit card usage to suggest the categories. For example, our PFM system can look at information about the vendor as the credit or debit card transaction appears in your account detail. For example, if you purchase gas with your debit card, information about where you made a purchase often comes along with the transaction information. When our PFM system sees a transaction from a gas station, the system suggests “Auto/Transportation” as the catagory for the purchase.

Enter Manual Category For some transactions, the reason is not always clear. For example, you could use your debit or credit card at a national retailer like Target to purchase many different items or you may use the ATM and pull out cash. The system would have no idea the purpose, so it would not suggest a catagory. These transactions require you to manually list the catagory.

Split a Transaction Category PFM offers the ability to split one transaction to represent multiple categories. For example, if on a trip to your favorite super store, you purchase food, clothing and health care items you could review your receipt and split the total charge across multiple categories.
