HALLOWEEN ZOMBIE PROM 2016

Seventy five members had a real “trick or treat” party on October 29, eating and dancing the night away. Even the staff got into the holiday mood and dressed for the occasion. Many thanks to Judy Konigsberg, Ethel Schultz and their committee, Martina, Ashish, and the staff, for planning a wonderful and fun event. Once again, Bernd our chef, was very creative with his culinary skills. Some dishes included were “wiggly worm pasta salad”, “graveyard layer dip with tombstone crackers”, “Transylvanian beet salad”, “mummified lamb racks”, “witch craft vegetables”, “spider web tarts”, and “ghoulish cupcakes” to name just a few. Many members wore orange and black that night, but some took that extra step. The best couple category included Marleen Hacker and Allan Eisinger, who won a free dinner at the Beach Club. The best dressed was Judy Konigsberg, who won a free dinner in the Grill Room, and the best and most creative “ghoulish table” included Gail and Colin Halpern, Evelyn and Joel Taback, Ethel and Harvey Schultz, and Judy and Paul Konigsberg, all who won a bottle of wine.

DEREK BUTLER and his SERVICE DOG, PHOENIX, is shown at the Frenchman’s Creek Charities Foundation Appreciation Tea. Phoenix was an abused dog who was rescued by FURRY FRIENDS OF JUPITER. Phoenix was trained to be a rescue dog and given to Derek. Furry Friends trains dogs to be service dogs to help returning veterans with emotional or physical impairments.

Massage & Skin Therapist, IRINA GOLUB Irina, LMT and Aesthetician with almost 20 years of experience, originally from Kiev, Ukraine, immigrated to the United States in 1990 with her husband Yan and two little daughters Svetlana and Angelica. Spin Instructor, ANDREINA HERNANDEZ Born in Venezuela and came to the United States 8 months ago, she is experienced in the fitness industry over 20 years as a TRX and Fitness instructor. Graduated from the Sociology University of Venezuela, a qualified spinning instructor from 2011, she has worked in differ- ent high quality gyms and sports clubs. She has participated in 5 marathons. With current classes covering ages 3-103, Eric has literally worked with over 10,000 children, patients, and residents over the past ten years. He is excited to bring his experience, passion, and dedication here to Frenchman’s Creek with his dynamic Tai Chi program. All resident of all capabilities can participate and benefit from this ancient Chinese art of deep breathing and moving medi- tation. Spin Instructor , Aqua Spin JEANNIE FLOWLE Jeannie fell in love with spinning as a member of a club outside of Wilmington, DE. On a whim, she decided to get her spinning certification. Although she wasn’t really looking for another job, she was soon hired to teach spinning at that same facility. It was one of the best things that ever happened to her! She built a loyal following of members of all ages and athletic abilities. She taught at that club for 6 years until relocation brought her to Florida in 2015. Jeannie is passionate about helping people work really hard while hav- ing fun in the process. She is thrilled to bring that same excitement to Frenchman’s Creek. Jeannie has her RPM Certification from Les Mills and a Spinning Certification from Mad Dogg Spinning. Outside of the gym, Jeannie runs a successful executive coaching business that specializes in working with leaders in the insurance and financial services industry.

Jeremy Kerber is an experienced, hardworking, and a well versatile professional Audio-Visual Technician. He has worked and gained substantial experience and career success in different fields apart from his current job position. Jeremy had once worked with Frenchman’s Creek as a Security Officer for three years before he later joined Gator Security Inc. as an IT technician and Graphic Designer. He also had four years’ experience in Law Enforcement. As a skilled, hardworking, creative graphic designer who has an eye for inventiveness, unique- ness, and quality product output, his exceptional work has earned him several awards in the Graphics design field. Jeremy’s exquisite attention to every last detail, personality, calm nature, and wealth of experience gives his clients and employers relax minds as he provides his graphic design and Audio-visual technician service for them.

Jeremy is 27-years-old, a husband and father, who is blessed with a daughter.

Good Day! My name is Adele McDougall and I have worked at Frenchman’s Creek for 5 years and so happy to be returning. This season I will be in the marketing department and will be working directly with the Creek Club. My background is childcare and I have a degree in Childcare and Education, and so am looking forward to meeting all of the children and grandchildren and partaking in all the activities throughout the year.

The Homefront column is designed to inform our members where in the community our new residents are living and other residences they may have. It also keeps up with our present members who have stayed in the community but moved to new dwellings. Of course we always wish our members who are moving out of the community good luck wherever their travels take them and our new members and established members good luck in their new address.

They also live in New York City. The Brumberger’s are leaving the area. BETH and STEVE ELGORT bought Craig and Evelyn Bernhardt’s house on Provence Drive. They are full time Residents. The Bernhardt’s are moving to another Florida area. WENDY and IRA WEINSTEIN purchased Richard and Carole Kirschenbaum’s home on Le Havre, They also reside in Scarsdale, New York THE KIRSCHENBAUM’S new address will be on Dijon Way. MARY ANNE and GERALD BARTFIELD bought Dr. Riolin and Joy Andrade home on Toulouse Drive. They also have a home in Belmont, Missouri. LINDA KASLE and EDWARD LEWIS MORSE purchased Leonard and Helen Beford’s house on Parc Drive. They also reside in New York City. We wish all our new members many happy days at the Creek!

J.R.CONGDON

J. R. Congdon is a 25 year member of the PGA of America

and is also a longtime member of the Club Managers Association. Prior to becoming a golf professional, J.R.

played collegiate golf at Mississippi State University and the University of Kentucky, where he lettered at both schools. A native of Kentucky, J.R. entered the golf business in 1986 as an assistant golf professional at LaGorce Country Club located in Miami Beach, Florida. He was promoted to Head Golf Professional at LaGorce in 1989 and served in that capacity until 1994, at which time he accepted the position as Director of Golf at Frenchman’s Creek Beach and Country Club. In the summer of 1999, J.R. took over the Director of Golf

responsibilities at Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida. From Woodfield, he moved to the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Jupiter as a golf executive. In 2004, J.R. was recruited by the owner of the Tesoro Club, a private club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. J.R.’s task was to help develop the ultimate private golf club experience. Within a few months, he was promoted to Director of Club Operations and helped bring on line both golf courses, the swim and racquet club and the completion of the 115,000 square foot Tesoro Club House. J.R. was deeply involved in the pre-planning and the execution of a PGA Tour event called the Ginn Classic, which was held at Tesoro in 2007. In the fall of 2009, J.R. joined the Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Florida as the General Manager. The Verandah Club is a 36-hole Cupp & Nicklaus golf and residential community. The financial crisis had taken a heavy toll on Verandah and J.R.’s initial task was to restore membership pride in the Club. He was also tasked with restoring the physical condition of the facilities, golf courses, and to stabilize the Club’s financial health. Once those objectives were achieved, his focus became and still remains, providing an exceptional hospitality experience. J.R. currently resides in Fort Myers, Florida with Andrea, his wife of 10 years, and their 9 year old daughter, Maria. We look forward to welcoming J.R. when he assumes his directorship.

ANOTHER GREAT “9” WINE AND DINE

The “9” Wine and Dine Tournaments have become so very popular. The second one this year, on November 11, drew a record breaking group of 172 players. Lovely weather enhanced what is always a fun event. The “9” part was a step-aside scramble format, with foursomes divided into four flights, one on each nine, more than covering both courses. The wine and dine parts followed golf, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres awaiting everyone in the living room, culminating with an extensive and delicious buffet dinner in the main dining room. Co-chairs Carol Smith and Joanne Weinbach planned and provided a great day, as did Rich Luccini and our wonderful golf and dining staffs. Don’t forget to sign up for the next “9” Wine and Dine on Friday, December 2.

It is never too late to share our members’ travels! Last February, Barbara Gersten ,Susan Jackowitz and Barbara Stern were in need of an adventure! This "calling" for adventure took us to India! To further this incredible experience ( although none of us keep a kosher home) we traveled with a Jewish kosher group! We flew to Mumbai, stayed a day before meeting our group, about 26 from Israel, England, Gibraltar and the US. We traveled to Raghastan,Kerala,and Delhi. Visiting the important tourist sites which of course included the most exquisite Taj Mahal as well as to the most funky of cities, Pushkar! Where upon stepping out of our old British style hotel situated on a holy lake( where daily chanting could be heard from the numerous nearby temples) we were immediately engulfed in a bazaar of street vendors holy cows ( don't wear open toed shoes)and women dressed in the most colorful of Saris! We bargained for trinkets, saris, baggy pants and even a suitcase and then laughed out loud later at our unreasonable request to have things reduced by 50 cents! Barbara Gersten turns out to be a pro at this kind of "shopping" and taught us novices a new skill! We traveled to the south of India to the city of Cochin with its colorful Jewish history ,touring the synagogues and were able to actually visit with one of the last Jews living there in the city! Here in Cochin we were delighted and touched by a visit from the family of one of our fabulous trainees, Jephin! Jephin's beautiful family traveled far, coming with presents and warm hugs, bringing a deep heartfelt emotions that cannot be described here! Because this was a Jewish tour we had the opportunity to experience meals and Shabbat services at at the Chabad house in Pushkar as well as in Mumbai ,where we were all deeply moved by the tragic retelling of the murders that happened here not that many years ago! We were blessed to have an incredible Indian guide who has traveled to Israel and was able to see many similarities between Hindi and Judaism! The poverty in India is visible, woman beg in the streets carrying deformed babies, tin shacks and crowded living and working conditions were viewed through the comfort of our tour bus windows! You ask why go there? We began to see these smiling lovely people through the eyes of our guide Lee, who taught us not only the history of India but the philosophical insights to the psyche of Hindus and shared his love for his people. A people who accept that this is not the only life you will live. Be content ,enjoy your family, live a good moral life and you will rewarded in the next! We rode on elephants, on camels and on hair raising pedal cabs. We learned about Gandhi, pashminas and durrie rugs! About Bollywood and bindis( dots between the eyes) and miniature paintings! About Ragas, ritual baths as well as Indian Aryuvedic and modern medical care! We established deep connections with our fellow travelers and continue to share our lives and affection through What's App. The stories of this adventure can go on forever, however the enduring story is one of 3 neighbors who formed a loving bond and a great committed friendship! We thank Barbara Stern and Susan Jackowitz for this travelogue. Today Will Be Different, Maria Semple, author reviewed by the Bookworm The main character, Eleanor, bounced from crisis to crisis, many of her own making, many caused by her own rash decisions. She had been the animation director of a very successful television program called Looper Wash. Her husband Joe was a renowned hand surgeon. They moved to Seattle with the expectation that they would live there for ten years, and then, they would move back to New York City for ten years. Joe wanted to live in Seattle; Eleanor wanted to live in New York City. They had one child, a little boy named Timby. They lived in a nice house, had a nice dog and were relatively happy together. Although they seemed content with their lives, beneath the surface there were secrets. Trouble was brewing, and it played out with humor and a bit of sarcasm for each reader to enjoy. When the book began, Eleanor declared that today would be different. She would get up and dress properly. She would behave when she interacted with people. She would be more organized, more responsible, and less rude. She would be relaxed and do the things everyone else was able to do without a problem. She would be more interactive with friends and her husband. However, even though she had the best of intentions, Eleanor had no filter and often lost her temper, lashing out impetuously without thinking first. Later, too late, she would regret her behavior. This day might not prove to be that different! How Eleanor spent this day that she vowed would be different is actually hilarious. She went from crisis to crisis with her third grader son whom she picked up early from school because he didn’t feel well. However, she had forgotten she had a lunch date, and when she remembered, she decided to take Timby with her. Then, she discovered that she had two lunch dates. In order to keep at least one of the appointments, she decided to bring Timby to his dad’s medical office, but, when she got to his office, she discovered he was not there. She had no idea where he had gone. She knew he was keeping something from her, and she set out to find him, or at least, to find out what he was up to that she did not know about! As she investigated, she got herself into difficult situations, and she jumped to some pretty radical conclusions before she calmed herself down. In several situations, it was Timby who assumed the role of the adult in the room. He attempted to calm her down when she overreacted, and he soothed her when she got hurt. He was relaxed while she was frenzied. I wanted to hug him. After Eleanor found Joe, she learned that Joe indeed had a secret. It was life changing and her reaction was typical, but it was her over-reactions that made the book so entertaining, and it was Timby who made the book worth reading! His innocence and sincerity coupled with his attempts to comfort and guide his mother captured my heart. He drew me in and kept me involved in the book. He was irresistible. His mother, however, sometimes became a bit tiresome. Although it didn’t seem as good as “Where’d You Go Bernadette”, it was written with humor that was sometimes laugh-out-loud. At the end, a reader might certainly wonder, was this day really different for Eleanor? Page 8

We are BARBARA and JERRY LAVINE from Providence, RI. We have been at Frenchman’s since 2007 and are very happy here. Bandit, our miniature French Poodle, came to us at 2 months old from a breeder in Virginia. He is now 4 years old. Bandit is the sweetest, friendliest,

kindest dog. He is happiest playing with us. He lives here 6 months and Providence the other 6 months.

Imagine being dumped on the side of the road in the Everglades, abandoned and struggling to survive, particularly, when you are a foot long and weigh less than 8 lbs. That was Lily, one of the dogs rescued by a Park Ranger and taken to a woman whose mission is to find loving homes for these castoff pets. She placed Lily up for adoption and all was well for a cou- ple of years, until the woman who adopted her lost her home to a fire. Not being able to manage a pet, she returned Lily. The weekend before the hurricane,” I happened to be with Norma Lippman when Marilyn Greenberg called her to see if she could foster Lily until the owner could take her back. When Norma said she couldn’t, because she was taking care of her grand-dog, I said I would be happy to take her for a week, as I was going out of town. Little did I expect my husband to volunteer to take care of her while I was gone for the weekend. By the time I found out Lily’s owner couldn't take her back, I was already in love with this sweet, unique looking little animal whose personality would melt anyone’s heart.

RHODA and CHUCK STEINER

MARIAN and IRVING WISEMAN’S two beautiful Maltese twin boys are Jonathan and David. They were named after two heroic figures from the Kingdom of Israel who formed a covenant of friendship as recorded in the Book of Samuel. While the Biblical text does not depict the nature of the relationship, it has been one of platonic brotherly love. I can say that our two pups care for each other and mimic each other all day long. Born January 8, 2016, they are 10 months young. They are pure bred and of champion stock. In accordance with the purchase of the “boys,” we had to sign an agreement not to show them in a dog show or allow them to sire. We received them from the breeder in July and they have brought us much joy and pleasure every day since.

Excerpts from Opening Golf Luncheon Speech on November 8, 2016 Marleen Hacker, Chair FCLGA

When I spoke last year, I focused on the word “gratitude”. Grateful for living this wonderful life at Frenchman’s Creek, grateful to all our past Presidents and board members who set the pathway for this great organization, grateful to Ruth Karlin and Phyllis Hershman for again planning this beautiful event. Grateful to the golf professionals, especially Rich Luchini, Rocco Panzitta, Chris Horne, Luis Leon, Billy Burke, Todd Kitchen, head of the Caddie program, Richie our Starter, and pro shop staff. And many thanks to Stacey for supplying the vendors today. The past few months have been difficult with the passing of our much beloved Robert Bruno, our Head Professional. He was our friend and teacher. Robert was very supportive of our organization, and at this time I would like to have a moment of silent prayer to honor him. In lieu of a “welcome back gift”, the Board has made a very generous donation in his memory to the Robert A. Bruno Foundation. May his wife Sarah, and their children find some comfort. This year, I want to focus on a different word: “transition”, as we continue to “move on”. Rich and the staff have done an excellent job these past few months. The Advisory Golf Committee along with Mr. Goswami has just announced that J.R. Congdon, will be our new Head Professional, and he will start in January. J.R. is no stranger to Frenchman’s Creek, and has maintained his friendship with many of our pros, as well as Robert. Robert is gone but not forgotten. Ladies Golf will honor his memory, as we have voted to change the name of our President’s Cup Tournament held every February, to the “Bruno Cup”. This 2 day Ringer Tournament will be held on February 14 and 16th this coming season.

MIMI BERGEL

On Election Day, November 8, beautiful weather provided a lovely backdrop for the FCLGA Opening Day Tournament. The nine and eighteen holers combined to play a nine hole ABCD step-aside scramble. With 160 women playing, both courses were more than filled. The teams of four were divided into four flights, with one flight playing each nine. Rich Luccini and the golf staff, as usual, did a great job of making sure all went smoothly. Following golf was a lovely patriotic themed luncheon attended, also, by additional ladies who were not able to play golf that morning. Thank you to Chef Berndt and to the fabulous dining staff for a delicious meal and wonderful service. Before, during and after lunch everyone was able to shop at a lovely adjoining boutique. Marleen Hacker, FCLGA Chair welcomed everyone and introduced the members of the ladies golf board and our new golf members. Wendy Adler, Vice Chair, explained to everyone that in lieu of opening day gifts, the league made a donation to the Robert Bruno Fund in loving memory of our wonderful Director of Golf. Tournament Chairs Ellen Goldstein and Jennifer Weintraub highlighted the tournaments for the season. Many thanks to Luncheon Coordinators Ruth Karlin and Phyllis Hershman who certainly did us proud this opening day.
