The USO Athletic Ac ademic Support program is designed to promote th e academic development of student-athl etes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-ath letes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support services are designed to enhance the student-athl ete's overa ll co ll egiate experience and encourage deve lopment and atta inment of academ ic and career goals. The Uni versity of San Diego's Academic Support efforts are led by Shaney Fink who begins her third year as USD ' sAcademic Support Coord inator. Fi nk was a standout volleyball pl ayer in the 90' s, and in 1999 she was on the Volleyball coach ing staff as an assistant, he lping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and a second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USO she gained coach ing experience at the high school , college and international levels for five years. She capped offa stell arcol legiate career ( 1990-93) at CalBerkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A., graduating in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. All USO student athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services. The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Counseling program with an athlete who would like to enh ance study ski ll s, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on goal development and attainment. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In add ition , student– athletes are encouraged to utilize the campus learn ing centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as wel l as to take advantage of the resources ava il ab le to them in the Career Center, Coun sel ing Center and Computer Labs. USO isamemberof the NCAA CHAMPS/LIFESKJLLS program. This program was created to enhance the total development of student athletes on NCAA Di vision I campuses. The NCAA Champs/Life Ski lls Mi ss ion is: To maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the athlete as an integral part ofthe student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS Life Skills program was created to support the student development initia– tives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student– athlete experience within the uni versity setting.

The purpose of our program is to assist student– athletes in mee ting this challenge by o.fjering tutoring, adv ising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study.
