Space-saving design The Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater’s caliber measures just 3.12mm thick

Watches

Above The Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater by Bulgari is officially the thinnest of its kind in the world

Striving for super-slim elegance The ultra-thin watchmaking market is highly competitive; records are set by shaving off hundredths of a millimeter. And Bulgari excites the watch world with its brilliance in this area Last year, Bulgari set a record for the world’s thinnest tourbillon, and this year shattered the record for the world’s thinnest minute repeater with the

Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater. This achievement is even more impressive when considering the acoustic difficulty of creating a loud, clear sound in such a small case. The titanium case and dial are optimized for the best acoustics possible; the hour indicators and seconds subdial are even opened up to amplify the sound. The in-house caliber BVL 362 is only 3.12mm thick, which when cased is only 6.85mm thick, more than a millimeter thinner than the previous record holder. BURIED GOLD To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Parmigiani Fleurier has released a special timepiece that holds a secret and celebrates its heritage

When the company launched in 1996, Parmigiani created only table clocks and unique pieces for collectors. In 1999, the first watch was released, the Kalpa

Hebdomadaire, whose tonneau shape is instantly recognizable. Now Parmigiani presents this anniversary timepiece, offering something secret, known only to its wearer – hidden in its steel case is a solid gold movement. Michel Parmigiani says “a gold movement inside a steel case is like a precious item, jealously guarded in a safe.” Jealously guarded or not, we love this watch. The sunray guilloché dial with applied 18K yellow gold hour indices and patented display system is beautiful, and the solid gold movement, visible through the clear caseback, is positively stunning. The craftsmanship is exquisite; each bridge is engraved with a diamond wing pattern. Currently, only one timepiece is available. Ten limited edition watches will follow later this year. $65,000, Parmigiani Fleurier in Miami, Julia Astrid-Gourdon, +1 786 615 9656

BRAND PROFILE CARL F. BUCHERER

Founded in 1888, independent Swiss watchmaker Carl F. Bucherer designs and produces all of its timepieces at its workshop in Lucerne. One of the few watchmakers that has mastered a peripheral rotor, and showcases it in a new movement family for 2016, it has both technically impressive watches and beautiful gem-set jewelry watches. 1. Manero Peripheral The new CFB A2000 family debuts in the Manero Peripheral. The A2050 automatic caliber has fewer components but keeps its award-winning peripheral rotor, which winds around the movement, not over it. The dial is redesigned as well, with a smaller date at three o’clock and a seconds 2. Pathos Swan For ladies, the manufacturer shows its remarkable skill with jewelry watches. The Pathos Swan has 922 diamonds and sapphires on the case, while the dial and strap has a swan motif on the mother of pearl dial. CHECK MATE While plaid suiting tends to be monochromatic and subtle, outerwear is a place for designers to embrace the bold and bright. At Burberry, chief creative officer Christopher Bailey paid homage to the brand’s long history of check prints, including the iconic camel check. The runway show opened with a fabulous check topcoat. The double-breasted wool coat weaves red, dark teal and purple for a bold, but warm and wearable piece to take you from fall to winter. At his first outing for Boglioli, designer Davide Marello presented a luxe collection of softly tailored pieces, showcasing the house’s prowess and rich fabrics. The unlined cashmere coat pulls together blue, red and camel in an elegant way and can be worn with all of fall’s jewel tones. On the other end of the spectrum, plaid has always been a staple of the counter-culture wardrobe of rockers and skaters. Kris Van Assche, Dior Homme’s creative director, took inspiration from skaters and had a current of check prints running through the collection, on everything from button-ups to suiting and parkas. Here, a luxurious fur collar paired with a classic grey and white plaid makes a city, and concert, appropriate coat.

BAGGAGE RECLAIM

SMYTHSON Smythson’s clients have clamored for a range of wheeled luggage. And prayers have been answered with the launch of the Greenwich collection. Smythson designed a highly technical bespoke completely smooth interior, it is ultra light. The body is made from a new patent-pending composite material and the canvas has been developed in a new 50 percent lighter weight. LOUIS VUITTON Louis Vuitton of course began as a trunk company, but it looked outside its storied history for its newest collection. Collaborating with industrial designer Marc Newson, the new rolling trunks were designed with the 21st-century traveler in mind. Moving the handle to the outside of the trunk creates a smooth and enlarged packing space; no more wrinkles or fitting shoes between bars. In addition to the

BUGABOO Bugaboo strollers might not be the first company to come to mind when hearing the words “luxury travel”. This fall, that changes. Shaking up the luggage world in the same way it revolutionized strollers, the Bugaboo Boxer reinvents suitcases from top to bottom. A set of interlocking, clickable cases can easily be configured for long and short trips. The fully loaded system for longer trips includes chassis, travel case and cabin case. For shorter trips, the cabin case and laptop bag should be sufficient.

VELVET TOUCH

velvet evening dress, $4,790, Ralph Lauren in New York, +1 212 434 8000

If its ubiquity on the runways is any indication, you’ll be wearing velvet every day this fall. Don’t forget evening wear – black tie velvet is one of the most elegant ways to wear fashion’s fabulously regal fabric. At Roberto Cavalli, creative director Peter Dundas showed his dedication to louche-yet-glamorous 1970s rockers, including a particularly fabulous tiger-striped velvet suit. Another standout piece is a teal and purple velvet evening coat that instantly elevates any outfit. Former Oscar de la Renta designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim built off the buzz from their well-received debut collection with their fall show for Monse where effortless, cool-girl allure walked the runway. The peach off-the-shoulder gown with slashed waist might seem familiar – it was worn by one of Hollywood’s coolest young actresses, Brie Larson, at the after parties celebrating her Academy Award win for Best Actress. After a stunning show of the classic Americana, for which he is celebrated, a series of velvet evening gowns closed Ralph Lauren’s collection. The plunging neckline on the pleated burgundy dress was a showstopper, and a bit unexpected for the king of American sportswear.

Dennis Basso's modern "grunge queen" wears natural lippi coat over silk dress

TAKE THREE/// LEOPARD PRINT ACCESSORIES If a leopard print coat is too much to handle, test the waters with a spotted accessory…

LUXE LEOPARD

The fashion world has long considered leopard to be another neutral and this season kicked its obsession with the print into high gear. The pinnacle of this trend? A leopard-spotted fur coat. New York designer and furrier Dennis Basso channeled a modern grunge queen with a silk charmeuse lace dress worn under a natural lippi coat. BIRDS OF A

FEATHER French jeweler Boucheron has been designing bejeweled animals since 1888, when Frédéric Boucheron gave his wife a necklace representing a snake to watch over her while he was away. Nuri, the cuddling cockatoo pendant has a rainbow of precious colored stones to denote multicolored feathers. Both Tiffany & Co. and Graff Diamonds have exquisitely detailed brooches depicting birds. Over at Temple St Clair, the designer’s fascination with birds of prey has taken flight with her collection of three rings, each depicting a falcon in a different scenario. FIRST DRIVE: 2017 BENTLEY MULSANNE

How do you improve on perfection? That was the challenge Bentley set themselves when they came to upgrade the company’s flagship, the Mulsanne. The somewhat prosaic answer is to create something more refined, with a more powerful engine, improve impeccable steering and handling and throw in some clever gadgets, including reclining rear seats. And this is exactly what the Bentley wizards did. When reviewing the previous Mulsanne, the biggest dilemma was whether to drive it or luxuriate in the rear. This issue is resolved here – a driver opts for theMulsanne Speed (which offers more power and precision) and if you’re more at home in the rear, you opt for the extended wheelbase model. With the right specification, this includes those reclining “airline” seats, some freakishly complex folding tables, which involve 671 moving parts, and a fridge for the champagne (a $10,000 optional extra). In between there’s a standard model – called “Consummate” – which does a bit of both better than most competitors. Driving the Speed along unrestricted German autobahns, the incredible refinement at frighteningly quick speeds is enough to make such speed not at all frightening. For all its muscular presence, it handles with so much responsiveness, refinement and immediacy, it feels like a much smaller car. The 6.75-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 delivers a 0-60mph time of 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 190mph. This upgrade brings crisp new lines to an already grand exterior. New LED headlights, stylish wheel options and a striking new front grille are delightful additions. A $28,000 entertainment specification includes Apple’s CarPlay and Google Maps, as well as two 10-in tablets in the rear. Whatever you want from a car – something fun to drive, a mobile office, or somewhere to sleep – there are few better options than the new Mulsanne.

TAKE THREE/// FUN-TO-DRIVE SPORT CARS JAGUAR F-TYPE SVR The first Jag to get the treatment from JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations team, the SVR is the ultimate F-Type. And what a treat it is. The numbers speak for themselves. The supercharged 5.0-liter V8 produces 567bhp and it gets from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 200mph. All in, it seems that specifying the optional carbon ceramic matrix brakes might be a good idea. Significantly lighter than the average F-Type, handling is crisp and engaging. It is available to order now as a coupé or a convertible. From $145,000, jaguar.com PORSCHE 911 R This is one for the drivers. While many have raved about the 911’s latest incarnation, one consistent gripe has been that technology has crowded out the driver, with the consequent loss of that 911 magic. In response, the engineers at Porsche have put together this no-frills package that doesn’t have air conditioning or a stereo, but which is so much fun, neither will be missed. A naturally aspirated 4-liter, flat-six engine is paired with a gorgeous ultra-short-shift manual transmission and (assuming you’re good enough), will get from a standstill to 60mph in 3.8 seconds. Top speed is 200mph. It’s the most fun you can have in a 911. $184,900, porsche.com BRISTOL BULLET Allegedly based on a prototype found at the back of its factory, legendary British carmaker Bristol hopes the Bullet will fire it back into the minds of supercar collectors, after dying a corporate death in 2011. The Bullet is built around a 370bhp, 4.8-liter V8 engine from BMW. There have been mixed reviews on its bath-tub looks, but Bristol is claiming it will travel from a standing start to 60mph in under 4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 155mph. Production starts in 2017, when it will be limited to just 70 cars. $330,000, bristolcars.co.uk

TAKE THREE/// BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES

Wireless technology is fast improving in the world of headphones, and style comes as standard…

PARROT ZIK 3 The original, Philippe

ROAM ROPES Created by a technician behind the Beats headphone phenomenon, Roam Ropes attempt to position headphones as “wearable tech,” with a built-in graphic equalizer (controlled by an app) allowing users to tune and tweak sounds. The idea is users wear the Ropes all day, plugging in the ear buds to listen to music or to answer a phone call. Sound is bright and detailed (sometimes veering towards the over-fussy), with different settings not making a huge difference to the signature sound. $199, roamwith.com BEOPLAY H5 “Wires removed. Inspiration added” is the claim from legendary audio maker Bang & Olufsen. It has enjoyed huge success with its headphones. This latest offering seeks to strip things back to the bare bones, allowing users to drive things as much from their cell phones as their headphones. An app allows you to select preset sounds or customize to your taste. The idea is to wear them all day around your neck, and this being a B&O product, things are compact and discreet. The whole package is a design delight. $250, beoplay.com Starck-designed Parrot Zik set an early marker for high-quality Bluetooth headphones. Here, the third generation raises the bar. Things are now controlled by an app, which allows users to select a preferred sound and degree of noise cancellation. Compared to others tested, the over-the-ear approach allows for a richer and more balanced sound. Everything from listening to music to taking calls is effortless, and in airplane mode (not wireless) they’ll go for 18 hours. $399.99, us.store.parrot.com

WHALETONE PIANO Inspired by the curved shape of a whale, theWhaletone Grand Hybrid is an update on the classic concert grand piano. The musical instruments sector hasn’t been a hotbed of rapid technological development, which is perhaps why the Whaletone stands out. Or maybe it’s those sinuous curves, or the fact that each piano is a one-off, made bespoke to the customer’s requirements. Inside is a bunch of clever MIDI sound processors, amplifiers and five class-leading speakers from Danish firm Scan-Speak. With a professionally weighted keyboard and a vast array of different sounds and effects, the Whaletone is suitable for your main reception room at home or a concert hall. $98,000, whaletone.com
