Profile of the Region – Cap aux Meules Island

L'Étang-du-Nord 6.5 km from the Information Tourist Centre in Cap-aux-Meules. L’Étang-du-Nord is located to the west of Cap-aux-Meules and is formed of several townships. La Vernière is the “suburb” of Cap-aux-Meules with its businesses and services as well as the Hydro-Québec power station that opened in 1991. This diesel plant has a capacity of 70 megawatts. The scenic road along the Chemin de Gros-Cap overlooks Baie de Plaisance (pleasant bay). One kilometre further on, explore the cliffs and caves that are the distinctive feature of Parc de Gros-Cap. On returning to Route 199, don’t miss the beautiful white La Vernière wooden church. It is one of the largest wooden churches still existing in North America today. The church has been renovated and has been listed as a Québec historical monument since 1992. Farther along, the Site de La Côte is a public park home of various events and gatherings where it is nice to stroll around L’Étang-du-Nord fishing harbour. Beside the boutiques and services that can be found on site, the focal point of the area around the cove at L’Étang-du-Nord is a magnificent sculpture. A wreck has been located near Savage cliff since 1988. Commonly referred to as “La Gabarre” by the Madelinots, it is in fact a section of a barge that broke while it was being towed in the Gulf. The second section is located on the Dune du Nord, between Fatima and Pointe-aux-Loups. It is possible to walk along the coastal cliffs to Hérissé Cape, and L’Étang-du-Nord lighthouse (Chemin du Phare), where a peaceful view awaits you, particularly at the end of the day when the contours of the landscape glow in the slanting beams of the setting sun. êP
