Marty’s Memories: Fourth of July by Marty Trower

Some beautiful traditions just don’t change. Babies are born and are carried in arms to watch the parade. Before you know it, they will be riding their bikes with streamers on them behind the fire truck and helping their fathers and grandfathers put together a float to tie in with the theme of the parade. Everyone has their special place to gather and watch the spectacle stream by. The people on the floats throw candy to the onlookers. We, adults and children, scramble to scoop up the hard candy and Tootsie Rolls. Dogs held at the leash howl along with the siren. Summer people have arrived, and everyone catches up with winter news. I rarely miss the mustering at the top of the hill where the Inn sits. There were a few parades though I would have liked to have missed: the “Year of the Baby” theme parade, for instance. My father had started a gang of older folks who rode mopeds together around the island. There were quite a few of them—Cynnie, Bob Estabrook, Nicki Wheldon. That year, they wore diapers over their shorts to fit in with the theme. Not my father. To be authentic, I suppose, he didn’t bother with the shorts. He rode proud and beaming and waving at the head of his troupe, looking as close to a happy baby as you could imagine. So embarrassing!
