One Man’s Island by Bob Libby

Independence Day on Chebeague is the most exuberant of holidays. Barges loaded with visiting cars bring all the toys associated with modern recreational celebration, and the Islander , meeting double buses for days, arrives loaded with freight. Standing on the wharf at Cousins, we tease newbies to the island that if the deckhands can’t fit all the gear aboard, they just toss it over the side. And who does not love the fireworks? Placed here in the inner stretch of Casco Bay, we can enjoy fireworks displays from Portland to Bailey Island as well as private shows that seem more elaborate every year. For many years we have enjoyed watching the Portland harbor fireworks from the Cottage Road, and many watch from their boats off Peaks Island. I will never forget the Fourth of July a few years ago when the flashing fireworks of Portland’s show illuminated the sky and then were outperformed by a hellacious lightning show as a storm rolled overhead.

down the hill from the Inn and marveled at the creativity of the float makers. What a great tradition: the marching clowns from Hillside, antique cars, fire engines. What it lacks in length is made up for with generous good cheer. Many years ago, Paula and I were entrusted with the games at the picnic behind the school. We had the tug o’ war between the fishermen and firemen, six-man races on the long boards we brought from Thick & Thin Lumber, the ugly leg contest won by Jonathan because Banu was the judge, and the crab races with crabs supplied by Brother Ross that ended with trauma when one of the young handlers was pinched by a belligerent crab. All ended happily, as everyone was awarded a medal and we moved on to the traditional cookouts and lobster bakes all over the island. We played horseshoes, badminton, and volleyball until we dropped in sunburned exhaustion. Nowadays, July is loaded with quality events: music, poetry, Whalers concerts, and sailing races. It is a cherished summer month and one whose memories we will reflect on as the days grow short.

Of course, the Great Chebeague parade is a highlight for many of us, and we’ve now watched three generations come
