July 2016 • Issue #7 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar

On the Cover The Fire Department was started very informally in the 1930s with the first fire truck, a Model T Ford, which was kept in the single-bay “fire house” between the Island Hall and the Market. After the men returned from World War II, the department became more organized, appointing Albert Bennet as the first Fire Captain on Chebeague. There was no Island Chief at the time as the department was part of the Cumberland Fire Department. The Chebeague Station was eventually relocated to a double-bay building on the Firehouse Road. In 1966, the Fire Department took over the operation of the ambulance—a vehicle Hay and Peabody Funeral Home had donated to transport caskets—from the Island Council. In 1983, Cumberland approved a plan to build a three-bay fire station with housing for a police officer on Chebeague on North Road. The Fire Department moved to the new station in 1985. In 2007, Chebeague Island became the newest town in Maine, Tom Calder became our first Fire Chief, and Polly Wentworth our first Rescue Chief. In 2008, the Fire and Rescue Departments were combined under a single chief and the town appointed Ralph Munroe, who is still the Chief today. In 1975 there were 18 fires and 16 rescue calls; in 2015 there were 115 fire and rescue calls. There have been many changes to the department from the use of the old red phone network to receive calls to the use of the current radio system and from that Model T Ford to the 2016 E One Class A pumper that arrived in June 2016.
