Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley was planted in 1988. The climate is cool and dry— ideal conditions to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality. It was purchased in 2011 by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, who believe it is one of Australia’s great single vineyards. The wines show great vineyard character, with a core of intense natural acidity, savory fruit flavors and lots of complexity even when young. The Chardonnay is fine and precise with firm acidity, and a combination of lightness of texture and intensity of flavor. The Pinot Noir is intensely aromatic, balanced with savory spice notes from the whole bunch fermentation, along with purity of varietal expression, fresh acidity and firm tannins.
