A commercial, financial and cultural epicenter, whose inhabitants play as hard as they work, it’s little wonder that New York remains one of the world’s most influential cities, with a cosmopolitan cocktail of attractions. Take food – from the Dominique Ansel bakery, home of the cronut, a croissant/ doughnut hybrid that's taking over the world, to salt beef sandwiches at the legendary Katz’s Delicatessen, it’s all there for you. At the top end, head for the much feted Eleven Madison Park, still considered one of the city’s best restaurants, and in a place where new is always attractive, the restaurants at the recently opened The Beekman – Fowler & Wells from Tom Colicchio, and Augustine from legendary restaurateur Keith McNally. Duly stuffed, even if you have no intention of taking the train, visit Oculus, the architectural wonder of a station at the foot of the World Trade Center, there’s a mall there, and the newly opened Four Seasons which includes a spa with outdoor terrace and sun deck. But there’s little time for R&R, instead hotfoot it to the new Whitney Museum of American Art – and the adjacent High Line, the city’s newest – and coolest – park. While you’re in the area, nip to the Top of the Standard, a glam bar that evolves into a club after dark, and plan the next day’s adventures.
