TOREROS DEFINED

TM The University of San Diego. which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercol- legiate teams. competes under the athletic nickname ofToreros. In 196 1. the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy. the founding father of USD. announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which ex ists between San Diego and Mex ico." His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term taro. the bull, and from the word torcar. to fight bulls. A ll of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bull fighter and signifies courage. honor and fidelity. USO student-athletes. like the Torero. represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the chal lenge.

The 2005-2006 school year marks the 45th anni versary with Torcros as the official nickname for USO athletic teams.

Goalkeeper USO will be looking closely at their three goal keepers to see who will best defend the net. How– ever, it is a three-way battle between Lance Friesz, Ian Coffman, and Kelin Briones for the starting po– sition at keeper this season. Friesz started all 20 matches last season allow– ing only 24 goals, recording 56 saves and a 1.15 GAA, while posting five shutouts. Coffman made two appearances last season relieving Friesz, re– cording one save against UC Irvine. Briones has yet to take the field for the Toreros in goal but has impressed the coaching staff with his abilities. "Briones' club team got to the finals of the na– tional cup last summer, so he is ready to play," said McFadden. "We have a lot of possibilities at goal keeper which is a great thing. McFadden then takes the To– reros back to the East Coast to take on Brown and Providence. "Brown and Providence will be another huge test for us," said McFadden "because we've got a lot to prove back there. The providence coach is on the national committee, we are out of region ,

"The double round robin is exception– ally hard," explains McFadden. "We have to travel thousands of miles to play in our conference and that takes a toll on our players. It's a lot to ask of our athletes, but we will just have to be better in confer– ence." The wee preseason coaches poll slated the University of San Francisco to win the conference with three first place votes, Santa Clara University to take sec– ond place with three first place votes, and San Diego to take third place with one first place vote. "Anyone can come out and win the WCC," said McFadden. "That's the real– ity of it. It's a coin toss. Everyone in the conference has talent." McFadden and his coaching staff will look to their captains, Caso and Meissner, to help lead the way this season. "We plot the course and they steer the ship," explains McFadden. "It's a big role and they are great athletes. They've been in the program for five years and they have earned their captains stripes." McFadden appreciates their input say– ing they are the voice of the team and that could be the difference at the end of the year. "We have to get back to where we were and earn our way into the tournament," said McFadden. "We know where we need to be. I am really excited with the staff we have in place and the players we have, both veterans and newcomers. Now it's just the execution and taking care of business."

SEAMUS McFADDEN Head Coach - 28th Season

With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last several years - eleven NCAA Tourna– ment appearances in fifteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Confe r– ence Coach of the Year a record seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, ' 86); won five WCC championships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Pl ayers of the Year, six WCC Offensive Players of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the Year. The 2005 squad was a mix of youth and experience fini shing 9-6-5 overall , capping their season with a phenomenal 4-2 victory over UCLA on November I0, 2005 at Torero Stadium. In 2003 hi s squad went 12-4-4, placed second in the highly competitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. In 2002 he directed USO to a 14- 6 mark and first round appearance in the NCAA Tourney. In 200 I the Toreros went 12-4-1 and fo ur seasons ago he directed his Toreros to a 16-2-2 record , another WCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs si nce 1990. The Toreros reached a national ranking as high as 3rd before fini shing the season tenth overall (program-best). McFadden arri ved at USO in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fa ll of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team 's yearbook as say ing: " I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern Cali forn ia intercolleg iate soccer. " How prophetic hi s words turned out to be.

McFadden

7-time WCC Coach of the Year

The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All – Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Iri shman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecuti ve CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzz le came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 54-year-old McFadden seems to save hi s best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heav ily-favored

In 1998, USO upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. I-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USO is 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden 's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to hi s native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to hi s homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain 's elite. In the summer
