Grounds Tips for your Home:

Its December and the weather outlook is that we are headed for a very cold blast, are your beds ready? Have you added mulch to buffer the temperatures? Plants should have 2 – 3” of mulch around the base but not against the trunk; if you plant has surface sensitive roots (Azaleas, roses etc.) you may add just a little extra mulch but remember to remove in spring. Container plants, being out of the ground and exposed is the same as being two zones cold- er and buffering should be considered when temperatures plummet, for temporary pro- tection, use a blanket, move containers together and wrap all as one, you can set them inside another container – you’re not looking to keep them but buffer the tempera- ture extremes. Smooth bark trees and young trees, cover the bark with bur- lap to prevent sun scald, this is especially true on trees that have a Southwest expo- sure. Burlap, not paper or tarp paper as sold in DIY stores, these seal and do not allow air passage further damaging the bark, remove in spring.
