When the founders sat on Houghton’s porch at the top of Wharf Road a hundred years ago and planned a golf course near the shore, they did not consider the need for irrigation. That problem was left for subsequent club members to solve. The first irrigation sprinkler system used deep drilled wells and stored water in 1000-gallon fiberglass tanks behind the clubhouse that was piped to sprinklers around all nine greens.More than a decade ago Greens Committee chair Wink Houghton convinced the members to replace that irrigation system with one that improved the sprinklers and placed August is the peak of summer here; visitors pile off the Islander , and many notice for the first time, the Great Chebeague Golf Club. Outside of the dedicated members of the club, many Chebeaguers might take the golf course for granted, never considering what an accomplishment it represents. Although some may know that the clubhouse moved to the ledge in the middle of the course was a rescued eighteenth century farmhouse, fewer are aware that it is the oldest building in use as a golf clubhouse anywhere in the country. This summer the latest development catches the eye of every passerby on the South Road: the pond near the road has been doubled in area, and a solar floating aerator fountain decorates the surface.

One great pleasure of August is the bloom of all the wildflowers and berries. This has been a splendid year for our blueberries and strawberries, and the grapes appear well on their way to bounty. We have special praise for the island gardeners who have encouraged milkweed to blossom. We are starting to see the evidence of returning monarch butterflies that depend on milkweed to thrive. We have begun bird and butterfly plantings on our farm and have taken seed pods from Chebeague along with Newcomb roses to start. August is the month to plant and scatter new seeds, tubers, and bulbs for future wildflowers. a pump in the small pond that uses groundwater to irrigate the course. This is a significant environmental improvement for the island. He also implemented the swale across the second fairway that drains excess water from the clay soil in the field to collect in the pond as well as the drainage line that snakes all the way down the hill by the inn and adds more water to the pond. Because the sprinklers only run in the early morning, most are unaware of the watering. Like his father before him,Wink has dedicated his life to the improvement of the Great Chebeague Golf Club, and we have all benefited from those efforts. The only course in Casco Bay is in the best condition it has ever been and provides a special feature to our island.
