Sail with the Whales... so Quiet you can hear them blow!

T he anticipation begins to build as we pass between the Headlands. With Yacaaba to our left and Tomaree to our right, we instinctively scan the horizon. Right from the moment that we enter the open ocean, we’re searching for a sign. There’s always a buzzing sense of excitement…what will we see today, where will we see it? Who will be the first to catch a glimpse? Heading out to sea, it’s not long before we find ourselves right in the middle of the ‘Humpback Highway’…and at this point, it’s ‘game on’. Eyes squint into the distance and every whitecap is closely examined. Did somebody see a splash? From miles away we can recognise the ‘blow’ - it stands up to 4 metres high and lingers for a few seconds above the surface of the water, like a puff of steam. Everybody on-board has the same goal – we all want to see a whale. On their annual migration each winter, the magnificent Humpback whales make a round trip of almost 10,000km and they generally pass within 3km of our coastline. We’re lucky here in Port Stephens, we don’t often have to travel very far to find them. The

– we keep our eyes peeled for all of these creatures on our travels. Now in our 21st season, the ‘Imagine Cruises’ team have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. On-board ‘Imagine’, our sailing catamaran, you can spend 3 hours with us, exploring the Marine Park, and of course, we’ll hoist the sails if conditions permit. ‘Envision’ is our 40 foot fast-cat and on this personalised, 90-minute tour, we enjoy less travelling time but just as much time with the incredible Whales! As we cruise across the waves, we scan the seas, looking for the tell-tale ‘blow’. The excitement is infectious and as our crew share whale-spotting hints and tips, our guests - both young and old – are soon squinting, listening and scanning right along with us! It’s truly a joint effort…we all want the same thing on this adventure – to have some fun, learn something new, make some memories, and of course, experience up- close the breath-taking Humpback Whales! Book your adventure today - Imagine

whales travel quite close to the shoreline…. on their journey North, it keeps them out of the EAC (East Australian Current). Have you ever watched “Finding Nemo”? In the movie, the Turtles hitch a ride on this oceanic superhighway all the way down the east coast to Sydney. The whales, on the other hand, have to avoid the EAC, because swimming against it would make for a long, tiring trip. Later in the year when returning to Antarctica, our coastline not only helps them with navigation, but also provides some protection for the Mums and their newborn Calves. With approximately 25,000 of these beautiful animals expected to pass by Port Stephens this year, we are anticipating some spectacular sightings. There’s nothing quite like seeing a 40 tonne whale leaping out from the sea…but it’s just as exciting when they get curious and come in close to the boat for a better look at us. Sometimes it really is a case of who’s watching who! Of course, we can’t forget the dolphins, the flocks of oceanic seabirds, or the cute Fur Seals that laze on Cabbage Tree Island

Warm Regards,

Laughter is strong medicine S ure, it’s fun to share a good laugh. But did you know it can actually improve your health? It’s true: laughter is strong medicine. It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. As children, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day, but as adults life tends to be more serious and laughter more infrequent. By seeking out more opportunities for humour and laughter, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness—and even add years to your life. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. It also helps you to release anger and be more forgiving. With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. More than just a respite from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh–or even simply a smile–can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious—just hearing laughter primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in the fun.

Mediterranean diet A heart-healthy eating plan

Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil. Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour foods. Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month. Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week, Drinking red wine in moderation, Getting plenty of exercise. Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. The diet has been associated with a lower level of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the “bad” cholesterol that’s more likely to build up deposits in your arteries. The Mediterranean diet is also associated with a reduced incidence of cancer, and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer. For these reasons, most if not all major scientific organizations encourage healthy adults to adapt a style of eating like that of the Mediterranean diet for prevention of major chronic diseases. The Mediterranean diet traditionally includes fruits, vegetables, pasta and rice. For example, residents of Greece eat very little red meat and average nine servings a day of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Grains in the Mediterranean region are typically whole grain and usually contain very few unhealthy trans fats, and bread is an important part of the diet there. However, throughout the Mediterranean region, bread is eaten plain or dipped in olive oil — not eaten with butter or margarines, which contain saturated or trans fats. Nuts are another part of a healthy Mediterranean diet. Nuts are high in fat but most of the fat is not saturated. Because nuts are high in calories, they should not be eaten in large amounts — generally no more than a handful a day. Avoid candied or honey- roasted and heavily salted nuts.

A nxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are a common response to a situation where we feel under pressure, they usually pass once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don’t go away – when they’re ongoing and happen without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that makes it hard to cope with daily life. Everyone feels anxious from time to time, but for someone experiencing anxiety, these feelings aren’t easily controlled. A range of health professionals and services offer information, treatment and support for anxiety conditions, as well as a number of things you can do to help yourself. Effective treatment helps you learn how to control your anxiety so it doesn’t control you. The type of treatment will depend on the type of anxiety you’re experiencing. The symptoms of anxiety conditions are sometimes not all that obvious as they often develop slowly over time. Normal anxiety tends to be limited in time and connected with some stressful situation or event, such as an appointment or a coming event. The type of anxiety experienced by peoplewith an anxiety condition is more frequent or persistent, not always connected to an obvious challenge, and impacts on their quality of life and day-to- day functioning. L et’s put ‘waterproof’ into perspective. Yes, a degree of water resistance is useful but that is not the whole story. In a worst case scenario (eg: failure of a Dish Washer) a substantial amount of water will be in contact with the underneath of your flooring for an extended period. Is there any point in the flooring surviving, but the subfloor having to be taken up and replaced? In either case your flooring would need to be taken up to allow the subfloor to dry. In most cases, boards would be damaged in the taking up process or destroyed it if it was glued together. There are a number of other structures that could be compromised too. Kitchen kickboards and units, walls and skirting may also be damaged by water and need replacing. In some products your flooring would have been glued together and the water would compromise the glue. The danger of not getting all areas dry is the quick development of mould which is considered a substantial health risk. The point is in these cases the damage is covered by insurance and the degree of ‘water-proofness’ is irrelevant. Waterproof is not a defined word and there are degrees of water resistance that at some point can start to be called waterproof. THE EXPERT

By Geoff Garlinge

Q: I’ve been under a huge amount of stress for the past year and have now been hit with a terrible case of shingles . My energy has gone, I’m having headaches for the first time ever and the pain is totally unbearable. When the blisters on my face and torso broke, I felt like I wanted to die. They still haven’t healed and now I’ve got a different type of continual pain that I’ve never experienced before in my whole life. In desperation I paid my GP a visit, but that has brought no relief. The doctor basically told me to go home and rest until it settles down and that the pain will eventually go of its own accord! That’s really no option for me in my horrible situation. I’ve had multiple kids all without an epidural, so I do have a high pain tolerance. But this shingles attack is intolerable and I need a quick way out of trouble now – preferably without using drugs. The doc said painkillers won’t work anyway. And so I supposedly need to ride it out until it leaves my system, the blisters heal and the severe pain finally leavesmy body. Forgiveme for sounding rude, but she’s obviously never experienced shingles herself, or else there would be at least a degree of empathy for my suffering. Is there any natural remedies that can help me through this? Right now I’m willing to try anything to escape the pain. A: Though it’s not any consolation to you, shingles is sadly a very common condition that occurs especially in those aged 50 & above. It strikes without warning and often in situations such as yours where there has been ongoing compounded stress. Typically it causes acute pain, fatigue and headaches. To clarify what has happened to you, the typical pathway for the varicella-zoster infection (a member of the notorious herpes family) is to initially break out as a bout of chicken pox in infants, after which it lays dormant in the system until decades later suddenly manifesting as shingles. However, help is at hand and I’ve been privileged to help many folks totally overcome this dilemma since the 1980s. In extreme cases the virus can actually travel to the brain, causing memory loss as well as severe uncontrollable spasms. A helicopter pilot who came to visit me was experiencing up to 300 seizures a day (30 just while attempting to walk down the street to my office). Thankfully he made an amazing

strongly encouraging me to consider having a colonoscopy. I respect and will appreciate your opinion on this. I feel I’m in reasonably good health for a 49 year old, but so did my Dad and even having chemo & radiation he rapidly deteriorated and was gone within 2 years with secondary liver and finally lung cancer. It’s not that I’m constantly living in fear, but am however looking for direction for the best natural way to go in case it does knock on my door too. A: So sorry to hear of your loss. Bowel cancer is unfortunately common place and I hear real heart- wrenching stories like yours on a daily basis. Regarding your colonoscopy question, there is of course always a degree of risk associated with any invasive medical procedure with the corresponding need to undergo a general anaesthetic. In this particular scenario, risks include perforation of the bowel and in some cases even death. Genetic predisposition is a reality and many such as yourself and thousands of others who have lost close family members to bowel cancer, it is nevertheless not only the logical strategy, but furthermore in my opinion indeed imperative. To put it simply, the potential benefits far outweigh the risk and multitudes of lives can be saved via early detection. Both premature death and unnecessary suffering can be averted in the process of undergoing a Colonoscopy. Coupled with an Endoscopy, stomach cancer and other problems may also be detected during the course of the procedures, thereby allowing for early intervention that again can create the chance to save a life in real terms. Having seen so many people who thought all was OK, only to be devastated when these procedures discovered not only malignant polyps, but in many cases metastasis having already taken place in the liver...I am a huge fan of the forewarned = forearmed principle. Without any doubt, prevention wherever possible via employing both a healthy lifestyle as well as these and other diagnostic procedures is the ideal path to be in the best possible position to detect and resist degenerative disease. Whilst certainly not inevitable that you will follow in the unfortunate tragic footsteps of your Dad & uncle, you will certainly also be wise to take charge of your health by making natural healthy choices daily.

speedy recovery, the pain being dealt with 100% naturally, regained his energy and even received far more than he’d ever had once his healing had taken place. I share this to help encourage you that there are certainly natural answers to get you back to better than “normal”. The pilot was able to regain his licence to fly as well as to function again at the extremely high level required to maintain his vocation. With respect to and in defence of your physician, the classic problem when dealing with shingles does not relate to a lack of duty of care. The “walk a mile in my shoes” principle you allude to is nevertheless very true. Rather it is the absence of education concerning knowledge, benefits and application of natural healing and related substances that is the real underlying problem. So please don’t be hard on her. Resentment will only cause more stress which will exacerbate your condition and hinder the healing process. Now for the natural solution to your dilemma... Propolis will be a major blessing in your situation from both a topical & internal perspective. In conjunction with Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate). Together they will synergistically alleviate the pain in the nerve endings you are suffering, reduce the inflammation, whilst also serving to accelerate your healing. You will need to use both the tincture & cream on the blisters, as well as taking 4 x genuine standardised Propolis caps (NG), 1 x 1000mg Tasmanian Squalene (DSO), 1x Q10 150mg (AH), 2 x Bio-Circumin , 4 x Sun Chlorella A 500mg, 1 x Ginseng 4 Energy (HOG), plus 1 level teaspoon of the Vitamin C powder & 1 x M agnesium powder (CH) three times daily in Pure Cherry Juice. The others to build up slowly are 1 heaped tablespoon of Organic Bee Pollen (NR) & a supplied spoon of Fresh Royal Jelly morning & night on an empty gut. Moving forward, you will do well to consider employing a lower morning & night maintenance dose of this regime as an integral part of an ongoing immune boosting anti-inflammatory preventative health strategy. Of course as always, you will need to state if you are taking any drugs in order for any potential contraindication to be checked beforehand. Q: My Dad passed away with bowel cancer last year, as did his brother 4 years earlier. My friends are now

So, I’m sitting here at Laserclear cosmetic clinic with Elle McLaughlin registered nurse and cool tech clinician, and am asking her the “cooling questions” about Cooltech AKA CoolSculpting HOW DOES IT WORK? The contouring applicators have one of four sizes to suction your skin and fat “like a vacuum,” crystallizing your fat cells. “It goes through the cell death process without affecting your skin.” The cooling sensations lasts a few minutes until you eventually go numb.” So, you can relax for an hour or catch up on returning emails, calls or social media. WHO IS IT FOR? Anyone looking for an improvement in their body shape,” this is not designed for a quick fix, major fat removal like liposuction. We consider “your age, skin quality and whether you able to maintain it.” Will it look good after fat is removed? “Yes, but your full outcome depends on how thick or pinchable the tissue is,” because the suction applicators can only treat the fat cells it can access. Giving our clients their desired result. WHAT ARE THE RESULTS? What you can expect, is a 25 percent fat reduction in a treatment area, improved waistline, less bulging of the area that’s of concern. “It may take more than one treatment to get to your optimum result.” WILL IT MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT? This is not a weight loss treatment. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat. Body contouring works for better proportions targeting concern areas like, the bulges over the top of your pants or your bra. However, your current weight, may drop “one or two sizes.” IS IT PERMANENT? Yes, it’s a permanent fat reduction technology, but your results will only last if you continue to control your weight and ensure good nutrition and exercise as part of your day. WHEN SHOULD YOU START? Before the summer holidays, weddings or just the start of the you that you want to be. So, schedule your session three months in advance, six at the most. Results are not visible for at least four weeks, with the fat loss reaching its peak at around eight. “By twelve weeks your skin smooths out and looks prettier. Different areas of the body can be treated within a week of each procedure and a review of treatment is done after 3 months to ensure that your first treatment has worked to its full potential. IS IT SAFE? Cool sculpting was approved by the FDA in 2010, injury will not occur, and swelling is minimal. If you have any health concerns, risks should be discussed with your doctor. Is cool tech just too good to be true? “It sounds like it is, with thousands of successful procedures worldwide it is very sort after. This is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction, promising to eviscerate love handles and bra bulge with the wave of a cooling wand. Although, some of this is up to you too! By changing some diet and exercise behaviours cooltech will help you transform into the you, you want to be. ASK THE SKIN AND COSMETIC EXPERT

RESUSCITATION/CPR - STEPS TO SAVING A LIFE

T he first few minutes following an accident are crucial. The treatment a casualty receives in this time can often affect their outcome. Sometimes it can mean the difference between life and death. The statistics for cardiac arrest don’t lie. Sadly, the average survival rate for someone that has a cardiac arrest out of hospital, is only 5-10%. However, if a patient receives immediate and quality CPR and defibrillation, their chances of

survival can be improved dramatically. In some cases, early CPR and defibrillation can produce survival rates as high as 75% Aid training can prepare you to provide these life saving techniques and improve the outcomes for someone that has been injured or fallen ill. In an emergency people often fail to provide adequate care for a casualty. Some people when faced with a crisis often are overcome by fear and anxiety

and may panic. Bystanders to an accident can have fears that they may do the wrong thing, cause further injury to a casualty or be harmed themselves, such as catching a disease. These reactions can often result in a delay in a casualty receiving the necessary treatment or the quality of the treatment being compromised. First Aid awareness can provide the opportunity for people to learn exactly what to do and be able to overcome any of these fears.

Rapid Treatment with Instant Results

Do you have skin tags, cholesterol deposits, warts, freckles, age spots, moles or other minor skin conditions that need removing? The Clinical Skin Clear or Lamprobe 4000 is a unique instrument for the effective treatment of a wide range of common minor skin irregularities. This exceptionally quick system uses radio and high frequency technology for the easy and precise removal of minor skin irregularities without penetrating the surface of the skin. This combining of the two frequencies does not leave a lingering burning

sensations, as some other methods do when removing lesions. This new technology is the preferred alternative to the more common procedures of cutting or Cryo burning lesions off, as the risk of complications such as scaring or pigmentation are easily avoided and the main reason for this is that the tissue surrounding the lesion being treated is not affected and is left unharmed. Non-invasive with minimum discomfort the Clinical Skin Clear treatments are exceptionally aquick (3-5 seconds), with instantaneous results. One treatment only is required and no anesthesia is needed.

HANDMADE JEWELLERY

Biron Laboratory Grown Diamonds are grown in highly controlled laboratory conditions that simulate the natural growing process which occurred deep within the Earth’s mantle. The result is a diamond that is physically, optically and chemically identical to a natural or mined diamond. As it is grown in a controlled environment, every stage of the development can be controlled and manipulated, allowing the Lab to determine size, clarity and even the colour (to an extent) of the finished stone. Part of the growing process involves adding impurities into the growth chamber, like Nitrogen or Boron, both of these are also found in mined diamonds. An advantage of Laboratory Grown Diamonds is the speed of creation. We have all heard the saying “a diamond is a million years in creation” however, using the latest technology we have brought this down to just 3 weeks. Laboratory Diamonds were first created in December 1954 when Tracy Hall, working for General Electric Research Laboratory on their “Project Super- pressure,” produced the first commercially successful synthesis of diamond that awarded him with a $10 savings bond. This was using the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) growth method, which today is still used for mainly industrial diamonds as well as gem quality up to, generally, 5pt finished in size. Today we embrace the CVD or Chemical Vapour Deposition method for all Biron Laboratory Grown Diamonds, where the diamond is grown from a hydrocarbon gas mixture on top of diamond seeds. The advantages of this method of diamond growth is the ability to grow on top of the diamond seed regardless of seed size, controlling the speed of growth, and controlling the chemical impurities added into the diamond to produce the colour and clarity required. Due to the formation of the diamond and the shape of the rough produced (which is almost identical every time), there is no difference in price between rounds and fancy shapes as you find in natural diamonds. Biron Laboratory Grown Diamonds vs Diamond Simulants Diamond simulants such as Cubic Zirconia and Moissanite’s may look similar to diamonds, but that’s where it ends. They do not have the same chemical and physical properties, meaning that the reflective index is different and the hardness is different. These stones are designed to give the consumer a cheaper alternative to a diamond, however, both are relatively easy to distinguish from diamonds. A Biron Lab Grown Diamond is simply a diamond that has been grown in a laboratory; it will test as a diamond on a traditional diamond probe. Even using the latest probes you are testing to see if it’s a created diamond by testing to see if it’s a Type IIA diamond (as all created diamonds will test as Type IIA). In nature Type IIA diamonds are very rare and also colourless or near colourless warranting a premium price. • Same physical and chemical properties as natural mined diamonds • Approximately half the price of a natural diamond • Boxed with a security seal and certification for peace of mind • Laser inscribed and certified
