THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING A COTTAGE

If you’ve always dreamed of buying a little cottage or cabin nestled in the woods or on the shores of a peaceful lake, you may be thinking now is a good time to go for it. Before you start packing your bathing suit and bug spray, there are a few things you should consider. For example, the lure of a cottage is often to escape the bustle of the city. Remember that remote locations can be harder

to access. Are you willing to buy a property you can only get to by boat? What about a property accessible via rural roadways that may not be plowed in the winter? It ’s important to have this all worked out before you make your purchase. Also, because of their location, cottages often don’t have the same services a home in a town or a city would. They may be hooked up to the electrical grid, or they may have solar power. They may also run off a generator. Another service to consider is water. Where does it come from? Is it potable? What about the septic system? Make sure you know what

you’re getting into and are aware of any special maintenance or additional costs that come with rural services before you buy.

“ 5 REASONS TO INSTALL A LANDSCAPE SCREEN IN YOUR YARD If you have a backyard – or if you have only a balcony, consider installing a landscape screen. Here are five reasons to install a landscape screen in your yard. • Privacy. One of the number one reasons for installing a landscape screen is to create a feeling of privacy. If your yard is exposed, or if you just don’t like looking at the neighbouring yard while enjoying your morning coffee, a privacy screen is for you. • Protection from the elements. Whether it’s sun, rain – or even that white stuff – an outdoor screen can provide your yard protection from harsh elements. For example, if you want to create a shaded area for hot summer days, a full-height screen that lets only a little light filter through would be quite refreshing. • Create a separation of space. Perhaps you’d like to define a dining space in your yard. Install a screen – either full height or half, to partition off the area and create a cozy tucked-in feeling while you enjoy outdoor meals. • Add an eye-catching element. Outdoor screens aren’t just practical – they’re also pretty. Screens with details carved into them let light filter through and act as a work of art. • Grow a garden. If you don’t have space for an in-ground garden – or lack the time or skill to look after one, consider a screen that allows for a vertical garden. Not only will it look beautiful when it’s in bloom, but you can also use it to grow edibles like lettuce and herbs. Yum! To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson Born in 1803 Boston, he was an American essayist, philosopher and leader of the transcendentalist movement. He was a proponent of individualism and strongly critiqued the pressures of society through his essays and lectures. His work greatly influenced the writers, poets and thinkers that followed him. He died at the age of 78 and is buried at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Massachusetts.

SELLING YOUR HOME? CONSIDER HIRING A DESIGNER So, you’ve decided to sell your home, but you know it needs some work before it’s ready to be listed. Most homeowners wouldn’t even think of hiring an interior designer for a home they’re about to sell. However, here are several reasons why hiring a pro is a great idea. First, one of the best reasons to hire a designer is that they see potential where us regular folks just see dull. Sure, you could slap a generic colour of paint on your walls and call it a day, but a designer will know which colours will compliment your existing finishes best, and which will turn potential buyers away. Another major reason to bring in a designer is that they can help you save money in the long run. For example, if your kitchen needs an update, a designer can find you good quality materials and finishes for better prices, which translates to a higher asking price – and a higher selling price. The last reason to consider hiring a designer is that they can save you time. If you need to get your home ready for sale quickly, a designer can help steer you in the right direction in no time flat. They already have all the tools and tricks of their trade and can help bring your home to a state of “wow” in a reduced amount of time. You never know, maybe you’ll enjoy working with them so much you’ll hire them to help with your new home!

City of Calgary, July 2, 2021 – Calgary ’s housing market is showing few signs of letting up, as sales reached 2,915 units in June – a record high for the month. “It is taking time for supply to catch up with the demand in the market,” said CREB® chief economist Ann-Marie Lurie. “Through the early spring market, many buyers did not have a lot of choice, but the recent improvements in supply are providing more options for those purchasers and supporting the strong sales we continue to see in June. At the same time, gains in inventory are taking some pressure off the market as it starts to trend towards more balanced conditions.” As the market moves toward more balanced conditions, we are also starting to see the pace of price growth slow. The benchmark home price continued to trend up in June, but the monthly gain slowed to less than one per cent. While the pace of growth is slowing, as of June, the benchmark price was 11 per cent higher than levels recorded last year. - Source: CREB ®
