FI CT I ON MARCH 2018

Dervla McTiernan’s road to publishing started with a tweet. With a complete first draft under her belt, on a whim, she entered an agent’s Twitter pitch contest. She knew the manuscript wasn’t ready but the agent took the bait and, with the first fifty pages in good shape, she sent them off. At the same time, Dervla made a doctor’s appointment due to persistent headaches and, after an MRI, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, one that would need operating on immediately. With blindness being a possible side effect from the surgery, she took the three weeks prior to the operation to submit the completed manuscript to everyone that she could — just in case. Post-surgery, more or less intact, Dervla spoke to agents — unaware that a bidding war was about to start. The publishing world had fallen in love with Cormac Reilly. THE MOST ADDICTIVE CRIME NOVEL OF 2018 Responding to a call that took him to a decrepit country house, young garda Cormac Reilly found two silent, neglected children — fifteen-year-old Maude and five- year-old Jack. Their mother lay dead upstairs. Since then, Cormac’s had 20 high-flying years working as a detective in Dublin, and he’s come back to Galway for reasons of his own. As he struggles to navigate the politics of a new police station, Maude and Jack return to haunt him. What ties a recent suicide to that death from so long ago? And who among his new colleagues can Cormac really trust? Betrayal is at the heart of this unsettling small-town noir and the Ireland it portrays. In a country where the written law isn’t the only one, The Rúin asks who will protect you when the authorities can’t — or won’t? CORMAC REILLY IS ABOUT TO BECOME YOUR NEW OBSESSION

THE SERIES LAUNCH OF THE YEAR!

Everyone in Vallen knows that ice wolves and scorch dragons are sworn enemies who live deeply separate lives. So when 12-year-old orphan Anders takes one elemental form and his twin sister, Rayna, takes another, he wonders whether they are even related. Still, whether or not they’re family, Rayna is Anders’s only true friend. She’s nothing like the brutal, cruel dragons who claimed her as one of their own and stole her away. In order to rescue her, Anders must enlist at the foreboding Ulfar Academy, a school for young wolves that values loyalty to the pack above all else. But for Anders, loyalty is more complicated than obedience, and friendship is the most powerful shapeshifting force of all.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO CHANGE OUR COUNTRY’S STORY?

Since publishing Talking to My Country in early 2016, Stan Grant has been crossing the country, talking to huge crowds everywhere about how racism is at the heart of our history and the Australian dream. But Stan knows this is not where the story ends. Everywhere he goes, he is asked the same questions: What can we do? How can we change the story? In The Urgency of Now , Stan continues the conversation he started with Talking to My Country . Expressing a cautious optimism, he wants to show us that there is something we can all do, that there is an opportunity facing Australia — an opportunity to fix past wrongs and set an optimistic path for the future, towards true reconciliation. It’s the right thing to do. But we have to do it now. ‘Grant is a natural storyteller … at his best when recounting his experiences and observations of Indigenous Australian life with devastating simplicity and acuity. Court Reporter J AM E L L E WE L L S

From true crime to petty crime — this is the memoir of one of Australia’s most experienced court reporters

As a seasoned court reporter, the ABC’s Jamelle Wells has filed thousands of stories on murderers, sex offenders, thieves, bad drivers, family feuds and business deals gone wrong. In more than 15 years, Jamelle has witnessed many of Australia’s most notorious and high- profile court cases. In the line of duty, she has sat next to criminals and their families, been chased, spat on, stalked and carted off by an ambulance for emergency surgery after an accident outside the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Every day in courts across Australia, the evidence, facts and theories are played out in a kind of theatre, with their own characters, costumes and traditions. But ever-present is the human tragedy of ordinary people’s lives disrupted, destroyed and forever altered — the judges, lawyers and barristers, witnesses and victims all striving to play their part in the quest for fairness, justice and, always, the truth of what really happened.

Dictatorland: The Men Who Stole Africa PAU L K E N YON

A vivid, heartbreaking portrait of the fate that so many African countries suffered after independence. The dictator who grew so rich on his country’s cocoa crop that he built a 35-storey-high basilica in the jungles of the Ivory Coast. The austere, incorruptible leader who has shut Eritrea off from the world in a permanent state of war and conscripted every adult into the armed forces. In Equatorial Guinea, the paranoid despot who thought Hitler was the saviour of Africa and waged a relentless campaign of terror against his own people. The Libyan army officer who authored a new work of political philosophy, The Green Book , and lived in a tent with a harem of female soldiers, running his country like a mafia family business. And behind these incredible stories of violence and excess lie the dark secrets of Western greed and complicity, the insatiable taste for chocolate, oil, diamonds and gold that have encouraged dictators to rule with an iron hand, siphoning off their share of the action into mansions in Paris and banks in Zurich, and keeping their people in dire poverty.

The Sinking of HMAS Sydney: How Australia’s Greatest Maritime Mystery Was Solved

DAV I D L . M E A RN S

‘We just found Sydney. We’ve got it. It’s absolutely crystal clear. She’s sitting upright in a small debris field. There’s no doubt about it.’ For 66 years it was Australia’s greatest maritime mystery: what happened to the ‘pride of the fleet’ HMAS Sydney and the 645 men aboard her? Was she beaten in a fair fight with the German cruiser Kormoran or was there treachery involved? Could the Kormoran survivors’ account of the battle and its aftermath be believed? Why were there no survivors from Sydney? And where was the wreck? March 2018 will mark 10 years since HMAS Sydney was located under more than 2400 metres of seawater, about 200 kilometres off the West Australian coast. Now in trade paperback, David Mearns’s gripping account of the mammoth search, triumphant discovery and piecing together of answers to the enduring mysteries both honours the anniversary and brings the story alive again to a new generation of readers. David and his company, Blue Water Recoveries Ltd, have located 21 major shipwrecks, including the deepest shipwreck ever found at 5762 metres. The search for HMAS Sydney tested all David Mearns’s skills as a detective, engineer, marine scientist and navigator.

Trafficked Girl: My Story of Fighting Back.

ZO E PAT T E R S ON & J A N E SM I T H

Abused by her mother, humiliated by her father’s sexual innuendos, physically assaulted and bullied by her eldest brother, even as a young child, Zoe thought she deserved the desperately unhappy life she was living. Taken into care at the age of 13, Zoe thought she was finally going to escape from the cruel abuse she had suffered throughout her childhood. But social services placed her in a residential unit known to be ‘a target for prostitution’, and suddenly her life was worse than it had ever been before. Zoe realised that the only way to survive in the unit was to go to the ‘parties’ the older girls were paid to take her to, drink the drinks, smoke the cannabis and try to blank out what was done to her when she was abused, controlled and trafficked around the country. This is the harrowing, yet uplifting, story of how Zoe finally broke free of the abuse and neglect that destroyed her childhood and obtained justice for her years of suffering.

The Good Mothers: The Story of the Three Women Who Took on the World’s Most Powerful Mafia A L E X P E R RY

You are born into it or marry in. Loyalty is absolute — bloodshed revered. You go to prison, your grave or kill your relatives before betraying The Family. The ̕Ndràngheta is the most powerful, stealthy organised crime network in Italy and worldwide, upheld by the omertà (silence) code. This is the story of the women who broke the silence. The ̕Ndràngheta’s power rests on omertà enforced through violence. Underpinning this iron rule is murderous misogyny. Girls are married off in arranged clan alliances at 13, beatings are routine and a woman who is unfaithful — even to a dead husband — can expect her sons, brothers or father to kill her, then dissolve her body in acid to erase the family shame. But in 2009, when one abused ̕Ndràngheta wife is murdered for turning in state evidence, state prosecutor Alessandra Cerreti realises the ̕Ndràngheta’s bigotry may be its greatest flaw. To bring down a criminal empire, Alessandra must persuade two more mafia wives to testify. The stakes could not be higher. Alessandra is fighting to save a nation. The mafiosi are fighting for their existence. Their women are fighting for their lives. Not all will survive.

The Wife’s Tale: A Personal History

A I DA E D EMA R I AM

Born in 1916, and a child bride at eight years old, Aida Edemariam’s grandmother, Yètèmegn, has stood, shaking, as fascist troops searched her home for guns she knew were there; in the late 1930s and early ’40s she fled both Italian and Allied bombardment. She begged for mercy from Emperor Haile Selassie, for a husband imprisoned for treason, then, widowed, spent the ’50s personally wresting from the Emperor a promise to educate five of her seven living children. For 13 years, she fought through courts unused to women defending their assets. Aida records her grandmother’s enthralling stories, which span the most extraordinary century in Ethiopian history. This is a story with an astonishing cast of characters, from emperors and empresses to lords and archbishops and slaves, from Marxist revolutionaries and wartime double agents to soothsayers and spirit doctors, from saints and martyrs to the Virgin Mary — but above all, Yètèmegn herself, who was grand and haughty and sometimes difficult, but also incredibly generous and who, despite everything, still provided an infectious sense of mischief and joy.

HOW ADDICTION AFFECTS EVERY ONE OF US AND WHAT YOU NEED TO DO ABOUT IT

The words ‘addict’ and ‘addiction’ are loaded with baggage. Not just in Australia, but the world over, addicts are considered to be sub-human, if not alien. Addicted aims to reclaim their dignity. It aims to rescue the word ‘addiction’ from its kidnappers and restore its humanity. It offers personal accounts from inspirational people who have found themselves in the grips of such addictions, and their amazing stories of survival.

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT ADDICTIONS OF ALL KINDS; SMART PHONES, GAMBLING, DRUGS, SOCIAL MEDIA

At the Ted Noffs Foundation, Matt Noffs and Kieran Palmer spend their lives working with young people who have serious and often debilitating drug addictions. This book shares the tools they use every day. It offers insights into why addiction takes place and why it’s a natural part of being human. It journeys across the spectrum of addictive behaviours, from social media to drugs like heroin. It questions the assumptions and begins to debunk the myth that all addiction is identical and predictable.

WITH PRACTICAL ADVICE AND EASY-TO-FOLLOW STEPS

THAT PEOPLE CAN START IMPLEMENTING NOW,
