Notes From The Council

In keeping with Governor Mills COVID 19 rules prohibiting gatherings of 50 or more for the months of July and August, the Chebeague Island Council regretfully announces the cancellation of the 4 th of July parade and road race.

School House Seconds will not open this summer as it would be extremely difficult to sanitize the donated items and maintain social distancing in our building. Please do not leave donations as they will be discarded. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. for information now available. Almost every organization has a Web site and a Facebook page. Bev’s Page is hands down the best source for all Island information including links to other sources. Chip’s page is steadily growing as a go-to source for events and all sorts of interesting bits. Chuck’s swap page is extremely helpful (including the humorous little additions). Obviously, these all require using the Internet and that is a consideration. We do want to continue to offer businesses and non- profits a place to advertise. An actual calendar with events listed canbehelpful, although sometimes there are too many activities to fit on the page. General interest pieces are meant only to be entertaining. Thank you notes will always be included. Some folks want this to be a newsletter. Others think it is a waste of money and paper because “it is all online”. So, while we try to sort this out, we will continue a paper edition, limited to business and non-profit advertising and notices, thank you notes, classified ads, an occasional bit of entertainment, a mostly complete list of events on a calendar on the back, and nice cover pictures highlighting our community.

The Chebeague Island Council has published the Calendar for many years. It started out as a calendar listing of events on the island. At one point, birthdays and anniversaries were even included! The Council, in keeping with its non-profit status and mission statement, is happy to offer other non-profit organizations a place to advertise their activities. Equally important, we offer very low-cost advertising for Island businesses, rentals, and occasionally items for sale. We have a few general interest pieces such as interviews with new school staff or reflections on Island life. Thank you notes have long been a Calendar tradition. Recently we have been asked to publish political announcements and articles submitted by individuals that require fact checking. As a non-profit, the IRS requires that we do not include any political statements or campaigning pieces. Articles that require fact checking are beyond our scope. These issues have lead us to reassess the Calendar’s purpose, how it fits within our mission, what is within our volunteer capacity, cost, and where we fit in with all the expanded sources
