Chebeague Island Council Calendar

#6 | June 2020

June 2020 • Issue #6 • Chebeague Island Council Calendar

On the Cover The cover this month features several of our Island COVID Crusaders! The Food Pantry has become an invaluable resource to so many of us this spring. The access to fresh fruit, vegetables, flour, and sugar (aside from the always crucial Doughty’s Market) has been such a gift that we wanted to send a special thank you to the crew that makes it possible every week. Featured in the photo left to right is Eliza Jane Adams, Jen Corson and Denise Hamilton. Not seen in the picture but always at the Pantry is Polly Wentworth. Thanks to all of you! Look for Eliza Jane Adams to be handing out free wildflower seeds next to the Food Pantry everyWednesday. A bright and cheery addition! Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone on the island and missing the island this month. We will get through this together and see you all soon. Be safe and stay home. JUNE 2020 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Notes From The Council

In keeping with Governor Mills COVID 19 rules prohibiting gatherings of 50 or more for the months of July and August, the Chebeague Island Council regretfully announces the cancellation of the 4 th of July parade and road race.

School House Seconds will not open this summer as it would be extremely difficult to sanitize the donated items and maintain social distancing in our building. Please do not leave donations as they will be discarded. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. for information now available. Almost every organization has a Web site and a Facebook page. Bev’s Page is hands down the best source for all Island information including links to other sources. Chip’s page is steadily growing as a go-to source for events and all sorts of interesting bits. Chuck’s swap page is extremely helpful (including the humorous little additions). Obviously, these all require using the Internet and that is a consideration. We do want to continue to offer businesses and non- profits a place to advertise. An actual calendar with events listed canbehelpful, although sometimes there are too many activities to fit on the page. General interest pieces are meant only to be entertaining. Thank you notes will always be included. Some folks want this to be a newsletter. Others think it is a waste of money and paper because “it is all online”. So, while we try to sort this out, we will continue a paper edition, limited to business and non-profit advertising and notices, thank you notes, classified ads, an occasional bit of entertainment, a mostly complete list of events on a calendar on the back, and nice cover pictures highlighting our community.

The Chebeague Island Council has published the Calendar for many years. It started out as a calendar listing of events on the island. At one point, birthdays and anniversaries were even included! The Council, in keeping with its non-profit status and mission statement, is happy to offer other non-profit organizations a place to advertise their activities. Equally important, we offer very low-cost advertising for Island businesses, rentals, and occasionally items for sale. We have a few general interest pieces such as interviews with new school staff or reflections on Island life. Thank you notes have long been a Calendar tradition. Recently we have been asked to publish political announcements and articles submitted by individuals that require fact checking. As a non-profit, the IRS requires that we do not include any political statements or campaigning pieces. Articles that require fact checking are beyond our scope. These issues have lead us to reassess the Calendar’s purpose, how it fits within our mission, what is within our volunteer capacity, cost, and where we fit in with all the expanded sources

JUNE 2020 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Island Commons Marty’s Memories – Hol ing Pattern By Marty Trower

The air has changed. It is warmer, gentler, and often there is that tang of saltiness that surprises and delights us. The island is a blaze of daffodil and forsythia yellow; the new green of the grass and leaves comes fast and will soon be replaced by the darker green. That will be with us for the next few months and we will take it for granted. Summer people are tiptoeing over cautiously, hoping to escape the fear and isolation of the pandemic that is raging across the water. I remember so well that magnet that drew me to the island before I lived here year-round. No matter how interesting or involving life was off island, I had to get to Chebeague to feel right. I’m pretty sure that most Chebeague residents, whether year-round or summer feel some pull and comfort of their own and it’s not something that you grow out of, not something that goes away.

Things will be different, though. Events that would draw crowds have been cancelled. We won’t be going back and forth to the mainland for ‘necessities’ as often; we won’t be cozied up next to each other anywhere, catching up. There will be masses of huge city cars barreling along our roads and lanes and docks. It may seem like the mainland after all. We don’t know about the future. The threat of contagion is still here and across the water and it has changed everything so much. One would think that universal crises would bind people together, after all, ‘we are all in it together’ but apparently, in an epidemic, that does not necessarily work out that way. We will all have to work hard to remember the gentler, loving side of our human nature to keep Chebeague the paradise we know it to be.

Town of Chebeague Island 192 North Road Chebeague Island, ME 04017 TownAdmin@townofchebeagueisland.org • www.townofchebeagueisland.org

May 13, 2020 Dear friends and neighbors,

We know you love this community as much as we do. We have heard that our message to the Chebeague family of year round, seasonal residents and visitors has sometimes been confusing and even negative. How do you say we love you and look forward to seeing you, but stay away? It reminds me of that old Dan Hicks song, “How can I miss you if you won’t go away?” My apologies in advance, to those not familiar with Dan Hicks music. So, how do we answer the questions, “Can I come?” and “Should I Come?”We have tried to present the facts from Governor Janet Mills Executive Orders for the State of Maine. When you come from out o f state, the order says you must self quarantine for at least 14 days upon arrival. If you were currently living in the State of Maine in March, when Covid 19 hit, the answers to your questions are found in the March 31 st “Stay at Home” to the slightly expanded May 1 st “Stay Safely at Home Order.” We are all supposed to stay home unless we have to go out for essential activities. The success of our battle with Covid 19 depends on each of us staying informed, being safe and doing our part. What does that mean to all of our summer residents that live close by in Cumberland County, for instance? That has been the most difficult for me to answer. Our first messages stated that even people coming from other parts of Maine had to self quarantine. That has been clarified now by Maine CDC. Maine residents are not required to self quarantine for 14 days if they move to another Maine location. My apologies for any confusion our first messaging may have caused. I’ve come to believe that we must follow the guidance given to us by the State of Maine. You have to look at that guidance yourself and make a decision about whether or not to travel to Chebeague. We are all just trying to stay safe. If you make the decision to come to Chebeague, please keep yourself and everyone else safe by practicing social distancing, wearing a cloth mask when you are in proximity to others, avoid touching your face, washing your hands regularly and keeping your surfaces disinfected. By all means, if you need help, please call on me and I will do my best to answer your questions or assist in any way possible. In addition, we have a group of volunteers from across the island organizations, known as the Community Action Response Team (CART) who are working to keep island life safe and the communication lines open We do not want you to feel unwelcome. What will you find when you get here? Most people stay at home and do not go to the mainland unless absolutely necessary. It is quiet.

You see people out for walks, but they keep to themselves. People are treading lightly. Nearly all of the events and traditions of Summer are canceled. For example, the Library, Recreation Center, Church, School, the old Grange (School House Seconds), Historical Society and Community Center Building are closed for now, including all their grounds. There are no public bathrooms open on the entire island. Some programs are being evaluated for later in the Summer with a wait and see for public health and Covid 19 spread. The Island Market and the Boatyard are open with safety measures. You have to call ahead with your Island Market order and pick it up outside. Many organizations are in flux and reviewing the Governor’s 4 phased reopening requirements. Our Food Pantry has emerged with wonderful options for everyone, not just those with food insecurity Chandler’s Wharf traffic and deliveries are at an all time high for this time of year which requires constant attention and patience. Life is very different. Last week, we had our first publicly announced Covid 19 case. The CART team is currently working with local, county, state, national and international experts and epidemiologists to address the island’s public health needs. We are evaluating on island options to care, trace and test for the coronavirus. Now, more than ever, we emphasize the safety precautions and personal responsibility we all must take for our personal health. How will I get there? During normal times, it can be challenging to live on an island. It is even more difficult now. If you plan to travel to Chebeague Island, one of your first calls should be to Chebeague Transportation Company. All of their policies are being reviewed for safety protocols on a nearly daily basis and change quickly. Check with CTC right up until the day you travel. There is currently no bus service from Route One, boat passengers are limited to 20 per trip and ticketing is contactless. The barging service is being revised to enable safe passage for people planning to quarantine for 14 days. Details can be found on the CTC web site. Planning ahead and patience will be more important than ever. We are one Chebeague community, whether we are year round or seasonal residents and visitors to the island. This pandemic is hard on all of us. It may not feel like we are one, but we are whether we are together or separated. Chebeague holds us together with the love we have for the island. There is a saying in Maine, I think we are on the other side of it. We will make it to the other side of this pandemic. Thank you for your support and remember to be kind to one another. Marjorie E. Stratton, Town Administrator

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Congratulations Matt! extremely pleased to announce Matt Ridgway’s promo- tion to Assistant General Manager effective May 1, 2020. Matt joined CTC in 2013 as a Captain after mov- ing to Chebeague with his family. In 2016 he was promoted to Senior Captain and in 2019 to Marine Operations Man- ager. Matt has spent most of his career working on the water - where his travels have taken him from Nova Scotia to Venezuela and around the Caribbean. Prior to joining CTC, Matt was the Waterfront Manager at Portland Yacht Ser- vices and director of the Marine Learning Center (USCG licensing school). In 2019, Matt played a critical role in working with Washburn & Doughty in the Inde- pendence’s construction – making regular (often weekly) trips to East Boothbay to check on progress and consult on issues. His knowledge of Chebeague’s ferry ser- vice has proven invalua- ble to CTC and the com- munity. Since becoming the Marine Operations Man- ager, Matt has taken full responsibility for marine operations, including management of staff, scheduling, training, and overseeing maintenance. Additionally, during the last two years, Matt has trained in various as- pects of managing the company. In his role as Assistant General Man- ager, Matt will continue to oversee marine opera- tions while becoming more familiar with mainland procedures. We are

I shall be assisting Kelly in this transition as her “scout” and informally as a sounding board for islanders regarding what I may know about an island property. Thank you to all who have sought me assistance or advise. It has been a pleasure serving. Serving for the past 6 years as an Associate Broker with Berkshire Hatha- way Home Services Northeast Real Estate has truly been a heartwarming journey. I cher- ish the relationships developed over this time with island property buyers and sellers. It is, nevertheless, now my goal to create more personal family time by substantially diminishing my professional time commitment. As part of that transition, my good friend and mentor, Kelly Wentworth began assisting as my Berkshire Hathaway co-broker last year. This summer, please welcome Kelly as the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northeast Real Estate Broker servicing Chebeague Island. Kelly grew up in Yarmouth where she still resides and has been an area broker for 30+ years. Her two children are both Yarmouth HS graduates. Her dad, was Chebeague Island’s appliance repairman for many years. Kelly is our Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northeast Real Estate Freeport managing broker and a consistent top seller. Growing Up on Chebeague Summer 2020: ELECTIONS and CANCELLATIONS Annual Meeting& Lecture Series 2020

The Historical Society is adjus:ng to the public health requirements of COVID-19 and has carefully considered the implica:ons for the organiza:on and the museum. Our annual mee:ng and the talk by Michael Porter, scheduled for June 20, are cancelled . To fill officer vacancies that would have been filled by elec:on at that mee:ng, the Governing Board of the Historical Society at its May mee:ng elected Roman Folk, Recording Secretary, and Mary Holt, Corresponding Secretary. President David Hill, Vice President Jackie Trask, and Treasurer Gretchen Tonks Hartling remain in office, all to serve un:l the next elec:on by our members. Evin Erder, Pat Fes:no, Ehrhardt Groothoff, Cathy MacNeill, Beth McNulty and Marjorie Munroe

It was decided with great regret that the Museum building and its outside public bathroom will not be open to the public this year. Our exci:ng new exhibit, Growing Up on Chebeague , planned for this June, will be featured in 2021 and 2022 instead. (A preview video on our website already has had almost 600 views!) We will be looking for other ways to bring programs to the public this summer, to deliver the annual Cathy MacNeill photo calendar which has become so beloved, and to

serve the research and genealogy needs of our members. Stay tuned!

were elected to fill vacancies as Trustees. An enthusias:c welcome to each of them for new or renewal terms!
