Members as spring is slowly emerging, it brings on early work parties. The next four weekends the club will host our Elite Brigades, following up with two weekends of Spring Work Parties in mid-May. Please come out to volunteer and help ready our great club for the 2016 boating season. Look inside this issue for the up and coming events: First-Mates Fashion Show, Ladies Week, Fleet Report, Fitting Out, and Calendar of Events. Please enjoy! Commodores Comments…

I think spring is trying to start, but Old Man winter keeps trying to hold on. The warm weather got me to remove the shrink-wrap off my boat but then the snow started again. We cannot control Mother Nature. One thing that I can control is getting the club ready to open. The Flag and our spouses attended the Blessing of the Fleet at the Mariners Church in Detroit where the club Burgee was blessed to ensure a good year. Sandi and I also attended the ABYA Midland rendezvous with other NCYC members, both signaling the start of the boating season for us. Please be sure your First Mates have saved the date for the Fashion show on April 30 th at Avante Banquet Hall in Clinton Township. Although the Elite Brigades officially start April 16 th , we have a fin in the water and there has been a good size, hard working group of members that have been at the island for weeks now doing the work of readying the club. The water is on, the bar project is well underway, and there are work lists for Harbor & Grounds and Clubhouse ready for workers to execute. Please come join us with your fellow members and enjoy the fun of getting the club and island shined up for 2016. We have a problem that I need you to solve, that the club needs you to solve. We are one weekend OD and 5-week managers short of filling the calendar. These are truly fun activities to take on to serve your club. Grab a friend or two and call Harley Burris to take on the week manager dates. If you want to fill the last weekend as OD, which is an open weekend with no events scheduled, please contact Tom Martin our NCYC Secretary to take it on. The Board of Directors has listened to the membership and their concern with the issue of work hours not being fairly distributed across all of the weekends at the island. Your 2016 Board has put a process in place to ensure we do not repeat the issues going forward. Our Secretary Tom Martin has been working with the weekend OD’s to level the work force.

Please support Tom and get your work hours firmed up very soon. Secondly, we experienced a larger than normal group of members who do not work their assigned hours or weekends. The Board has increased the financial penalty for noncompliance. This year all members failing to meet their assigned hours will immediately be billed after the next meeting of the Board versus waiting until the end of the year as has been done in the past. We need your work hours not your dollars. Please help us help the club and work your required hours on the weekend you are assigned.

It’s time to be sure you start thinking boating and getting your vessel ready to hit the water and our club ready for a fun filled year.

Vice Commodores Comments…

With the way the weather has been the last week, it’s hard to believe it’s April. Hopefully we will see some sun and warm temps in the near future. At least the water levels are up, already within a few inches of last year’s highs. The mild winter allowed early access to the island this spring and with the work still required on the bar renovation we have been at the island the last three weekends, opening the clubhouse and starting to put the floor back into place. Besides the tremendous amount of work required to finish the bar project we still have the annual tasks of preparing the Fins, harbors, clubhouse and grounds. The number of work hours needed for these tasks is huge. Please come out and lend a hand in helping to get the island back into shape at one of the Elite Brigade and/or regular work parties. Member participation allows us to keep our costs and dues at a minimum and you don’t need any special skills to help. Remember to attend the First mates fashion Show on April 30 th . This event kicks off the First Mates fund raising events and all of the money raised goes to club projects. The club officially opens in seven weeks, please don’t wait to make the opening weekend your first visit to the club. Come out and lend a hand, you won’t regret it. VC Pat

Rear Commodores Comments…

As Mother Nature continues to think it is January instead of April, our thoughts are centered on getting the Club ready for boating season. While the Elite Brigade does not officially start until April 16 th , our Commodore Chuck and other dedicated members of the Club have been working hard on getting the Bar area ready for the season. Also, thanks to Darryl Campbell and his crew, the number 3 Fin is in the water and the new Thruster has been installed. As I did last month, I want to continue to list some educational pieces of information that is useful for all of our boating members. This month I want to discuss fire safety on your boat. This is an excerpt taken from Boating magazine, the May issue. Your fire plan consists of “I know I have at least one fire extinguisher somewhere on this boat”. Knowing the exact locations of extinguishers and how to use them and how to quickly secure the engines, blowers and electrical power are good starts. You also need an exit strategy (escape plan) in case the fire is beyond control. And the most important part is practice. Getting in the habit of taking a few minutes to review your fire/escape plan before each outing can make all the difference. A fire on your boat can create an immediate and overwhelming fear and panic that can cloud any capacity for making decisions. Having a practiced routine will allow you to jump straight into action without thinking – and sometimes a few seconds can mean the difference between extinguishing the fire and abandoning the boat. Also, make sure your extinguishers have been checked and have current certification labels on them. Look forward to seeing you at our Elite Brigade weekend, April 16th. R/C Randy Pagel

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

Long time member Bert Johansson, husband of Marie, passed away during the month of March. They have been members since 1972. Many of you will remember that he had to have his “Manhattan” made just a certain way. He was a retired Detroit fireman. Don Shepperson, Sr also passed away during the last month. Don and Helen are the parents of Don Shepperson and Gale Beecherl. Their family has been very involved at NCYC for many years.

Philip and Joni Maniaci’s son, Joey, is still in Henry Ford Hospital in the ICU. He is recovering from receiving a LVAD heart pump looking ahead to a successful recuperation. A bible verse and thought. Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s Chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” What a great thought to try to live by each day. A lifestyle like this would be very rewarding to both you and your friends. “Gardens of our Souls”

If I were planning a flower garden of color, texture and form, my first step would be to prepare the ground for planting. So I would pull up any weeds that might interfere with the growth of the flowers, knowing that weeding only one time would not be enough. To ensure the growth of my flowers, I would weed my garden regularly. The same holds true in the garden of my soul where thoughts and faith come together to form a spirituality that nourishes and sustains me. If I continue to weed my mind of hurt feelings and angry thoughts, then I am clearing the way for positive images to grow and flourish. It is true – love and understanding will come forth as I free my thoughts and prepare the way for positive living.

This is launch month for most, and what better way to get some things done on the boat and not worrying about “what’s for dinner”. Get this one pot dinner going in the morning to be ready to eat when it’s time for a break. Simply add some fresh veggies and dip, maybe some chips, and dinner is served.

1. Put all ingredients except cheese and hoagie buns in the crock pot. 2. Cover meat with water. 3. Cover and bake on low 7 hours. 4. Remove Bay Leaf 5. Pull apart roast and serve on toasted buns with provolone cheese slices.

Commodore’s Comments: Commodore, Chuck Stroh I would like to welcome the NCYC 2016 First Mates. Thank you for joining tonight's meeting. The First Mates provide an essential function for the club. In keeping with the mission of the club, they provide fun for the membership through the events they sponsor. They provide an environment of comradery promoting the spouses to be involved in the club in a meaningful way. They can always be counted on to support the vital club projects, financially in their fundraising efforts as well as through their hard work. Sandi and I want to thank everyone who came to the 2016 Commodore's Ball and shared the special night with us. From all that I could see and the feedback we got, everyone that attended had a great time, good food, music, and fun. Thank you to everyone that helped us plan and put on the event, as well as those that came out for the Saturday morning set up party. We are making progress towards meeting the goals that we identified last meeting. Kim has found a way to add fields in the Club express database to collect essential data that we have struggling with, like work hours exemptions history. Frank was pushing the use of technology into the Board operation and we sit here with Kim on video conference participating in a meaningful way from Florida. Also Ian has the pricing updates to right the ship on bar sales to maintain the necessary profit margin providing revenues to the club-operating budget for the future. Let’s keep those goals in front of us to help us meet them. We only have 10 more meetings to get them accomplished. Vice Commodore’s Comments: Vice Commodore, Pat Carroll I would like to start off by congratulating Commodore Chuck and his wife Sandi for the fine job they did in hosting the Commodore’s Ball. The venue, meal, drinks, and entertainment were great and everyone in attendance had a great time. If we, as a board, are to accomplish anything this year, we must learn to work as one. That does not mean we can’t have our own opinions. It means we need to keep everyone in the loop. We need to show the membership that we work together, involving everyone from the newly elected to the Flag. Let’s remember that as we conduct our business, whether new or old, we need to show and prove that we truly are a board that is united and striving for the betterment of the club.

Rear Commodore’s Comments: Rear Commodore, Randy Pagel It was nice to see a good turnout for the Commodore’s Ball. It was a great time and great venue. Many thanks to Commodore Chuck and his wife Sandi.

It is a slow time of the year as it relates to the Club, but there is a lot of “behind the scenes” planning that is being done to ensure we will be ready for the summer. I think we all look forward to warm weather to arrive and get ready for boating. Please make sure you schedule your time to work on the Elite Brigade work weekends coming up in April. 2016 Forward Planning Committee will consist of: R/C Randy Pagel (Chairman) Scott Greenfelder Don Ruma Steve Martin (new) Ben Carroll P/C Bill Bauer (new) Greg Criner Financial Report Treasurer, Frank Corcoran For the month of January, revenues were $59,468, expenses $30,532, resulting in a net profit of $28,936. Revenues principally consisted of Membership Dues of $46,400 and Commodore Ball ticket receipts of $12,160. Expenses primarily included insurance and taxes of $7,215 and Commodore Ball expenses of $19,537. On the balance sheet, total cash stood at $175,343, including $47,626 of emergency funds. Other Current Assets consists of $30,000 due frommembers for the Member Loan program, $6,640 liquor inventory, and $4,216 for deposits paid on future services or events. Liabilities consists primarily of First Merit bank loan of $67,188. We began the year with cash on hand of $113,323 and, during the month of January, generated net cash of $62,019. Cash provided from operations of $66,782 was used for POS upgrade, $716, and loan principal pay down of $4,047. Member Loan Update First Merit bank loan paid off February 1. Promissory Notes of $65,000 have been issued to Members; interest rate, 5.0%. Flood insurance being terminated. To provide funding for Notes which will mature in 2017, we have established a restricted, special purpose bank account at First Merit bank. Assuming all Notes repaid in 12 [maximum maturity 18 months] months, cash requirement of $68,250 will be needed. Motion : To provide necessary funding for Member Notes maturing in 2017, the Treasurer will transfer $5,687.50 monthly from the main account to the special purpose bank account at First Merit Bank. The transfers will occur beginning February 2016 and for each of the next eleven months. Motion by Brian Fringer. Motion seconded. Motion carried. Visitor, David Boltneck, Boltneck and co., NCYC financial review company, gave a short biography and summary of his company and how the review process will work. As a follow-up to your question at our recent Board meeting, I have prepared a brief summary regarding the impact of the Member Loan transaction on 2016. It is particularly important, especially in discussion with any members, to distinguish between the P&L effect of the transaction and the cash effect on 2016. Keep in mind, this reference only compares the effect of 2016 projected results vs. 2016 Budget, and does not include any anticipated effect on 2017 when the Notes mature. Hopefully this helps understand better the effect of the various components of the transaction on the 2016 P&L and Cash Flow.

Hugh Vestal and Scott have been working on the instruction manual for opening and closing the clubhouse. It should be ready by the end of March. Hugh will return from Florida on March 11. On March 12, Scott and Hugh will try to get on the island to compose a detailed list of materials needed for bar upgrade, and any other projects. Several members have contacted Scott to volunteer to assist with Elite Brigade projects. Ron Braun and Greg Smith have volunteered to assist with the bar. Greg Criner has also offered his help wherever needed. Signs for ‘NO Alcohol’ to be brought inside the clubhouse to be posted. Bill Calihan to work with Art Brooks to replace the existing signs on the island. Bill Calihan Discussion on raising dockage fees: after extensive competitive fee review of surrounding Marina’s by Bill Calihan, the decision was made to leave dockage fees as is. Repairs required around the Boutique: discussion was relative to Door repair and decking around boutique. Bill Calihan can provide more details if necessary. “D” dock repair, quotes rec’d. decision to pay or find members to repair during the elite brigade. All work should be able to be completed by members, excluding Pilings. Water Bibs to be added to pedestal’s during the spring work parties. Dumpster location: a comment was made relative to the dumpster in regards to a better location to allow ease of parking. No decision made. Our Budget is targeting $136,850 for membership dues. We have collected $114,250. Out of the 7 members on leave of absence in 2015, two have come back. Larry Ianitelli sent in his resignation. Eric Hagendorff resigned. PC Pete Beechral asked for a leave of absence extension and the other two are still on the fence. Six potential members are on the waiting list. Changes to status: Ron Kurlinski moved to Florida and resigned. Marie Yowan passed away. Mike Oliver requested to move from non-boating to boating. Philip Mancini requested to move from boating to leave of absence. Ron Kahl requested a leave of absence. PC Pete Beecherl requested an extension to his leave of absence. Harbor & Grounds – Membership - Kim Miedema presented via skype. The February deadline came and went. We still have 17 members who have not responded and $9,650 to collect. Late fees go into effect March 1.

Phil Forhan wants to rescind his request to quit and come back as non-boating. Terry Schmike has requested clarification on last year’s request. He had proposed to use dues sent in for 2015 for 2016 with his 2015 leave of absence request. Ron Brown update: He did not intend to quit and he has sent a letter to request reinstatement. Check is in the mail for money owed. Motion made to rescind Mr. Brown’s expulsion per receipt of all money owed. Board voted to reinstate. Jay Gronbach proposed to work 20 hours on his work weekend instead of work party time due to California residency. His alternative is to resign in good standing. Motion was made to accept the proposal to work 20 hours on his work weekend. Board approved the proposal. Jacob Anger birthday is 10/23/88. He is no longer eligible as a Junior Member and must become a non- boating member. An email was sent with no response. A notice will be sent to with the choices allowed for in the by-lays. Secretary – Tom Martin Tom reported that the reciprocal club invitations went out Wednesday, January 27, 2016. JYC was not included in the mailing. Per the Board’s request, the threshold for charging weekend no-shows who have not made an attempt to switch or notify the OD or NCYC Secretary should be three weeks. When this occurs, the member will be charged for the 8 or 16 hours, depending on their membership status, at the next board meeting, with board approval. Discussion was held on this procedure. Board review and motion to accept the OD man-hours schedule for all party, open and 3-day weekends. The Secretary will issue the revised schedule with allowable hours per week. Each OD that is over on hours will be required to reduce to the published hours. If no reduction is made the Secretary will make the changes are required to meet the published hours. A fan-out was sent advising members to let Tom know their preference for weekend hours and to being assigning weekends to those who did not reply to the fan-out. Significant discussion on worker committed hours and how to enforce the published schedule. OD’s will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the agreed-to weekend worker hour model. Marie Pepin, President First Mates, and members of the First Mates Board of Directors were introduced. Marie provided an explanation of the 2016 First Mates project – the renovation of the east clubhouse. The First Mates have budgeted $4,000 to be dedicated to the renovation of the entire east clubhouse, to include 3 age-appropriate lounging/play areas. The First Mates plan to repair and paint walls, remove (dispose of or sell) unused video games, fix or remove the current air hockey table and provide new tables/chairs to the area. Discussion was held regarding enforcing the “no alcohol is to be used in this area.” Concerns were expressed about the need to use the area as overflow during holidays or party weekends. Further discussion is needed on this policy. Signs are currently posted to this effect but not adhered to. All video games are available for sale – operating or non-operating condition. Discussion was held about ways to dispose of the games. The motion was made to approve the 2016 First Mates project. Motion seconded by Bill Calihan. Motion carried. Discussion was held with regard to the First Mates providing partial funding for a new pizza oven for the clubhouse. There is concern about where the oven can be located in the kitchen. Funding from the First Mates will need to be discussed and approved by the entire First Mates membership at its next general meeting, since the funds are not budgeted for in the 2016 First Mates Budget. Frank Corcoran addressed the issue of avoiding duplication of funds/efforts when sending flowers to members who have had surgery, etc. To simplify the process, it was suggested that the oversight be the responsibility of the First Mates. Funding would be provided to the First Mates from the NCYC yearly budget. Marie indicated that the First Mates Bylaws includes a provision for flowers, and this would need to be discussed/amended by the First Mates general membership before being implemented. Randy Pagel will meet with Marie to discuss this further Supplies - Ian Blackburn At the board’s request, Ian reviewed the pricing for the high-end liquors.
