From the Editor…

There are good ships, There are wood ships,

And there are ships to sail the sea, But the best ships are Friendships, And may they always be.

Now you've got a good nautical toast to raise at the office Christmas party.

And so it is in a place like our club. We come to enjoy a place like no other, and it's the people who make the place it is. As we look ahead to next year, one of my favorite things is making new friends along the way. As you'll see in upcoming Fan-Outs, we're looking for a few good photo enthusiasts. Anyone with a desire to take some photos and make them available to me while attending events at the club is welcome to contact Randy to set up some time. We use the photos in the Beacon, Roster and also on the Website. See the flyer later in this Beacon. Also for those of you who contribute to the Beacon I'll be working diligently to get this publication out earlier each month so I'll appreciate submissions by the 25th of the preceding month. There'll be a reminder Fan-Out sent on the 20th of each month to help.

Nancy and I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Wherever your holiday travels take you, please be careful and safe. We accomplished a lot with our projects this past year. From finishing the bar renovation, the new walkway and door for easy access to the walk in fridge, and thanks to the First Mates, AC and heat in the upstairs rooms. Please support our future Flag and Boards in their upgrading and preserving our Island and Clubhouse. I would like to thank the Board of Directors, all appointees, the weekday managers, the weekend OD’s, committee members, those who hosted an event and those who helped in preparing, cooking and cleaning up. And thanks to all the members who came out and participated in making this a fantastic year at NCYC. A very special thanks to my wife Nancy, for all of your help, understanding and support. Together we made it a great year. In my last of 36 beacon articles, I want to thank the NCYC members for their trust and support in my running the club, it has been a privilege and an honor. Vice Commodores Comments…

Thanksgiving has come and gone by now with frost on the pumpkin, soon to be snow on the ground. Linda and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We all look forward to our upcoming traditions as a time to spend quality time with family and friends. We very rarely mention our monthly Board Meetings but the December meeting will be short and sweet. Not much business to speak of and what there is to address is usually dispatched quickly. The Changing of the Guard occurs here with the out- going and incoming Directors in attendance. My congratulations and respect goes to those that have stepped up to carry on the business of the Club. Many thanks for a job well done to those leaving their positions after putting up so much of their time into what has needed to be done. We have acquired a new caterer for Friday nights in 2018. It is called Four-C’s catering out of Warren. We will be bringing back the “Bar Food” approach with burgers/fries/fish and chips/chicken strips and an occasional full blown dinner. I would be remiss in not mentioning Commodore Pat and his First Lady Nancy. They have both done a great job in moving the Club forward both socially and financially. I can only hope that next year I can say that Linda and I are successful too in doing what is right for the Club. Please keep January 20, 2018 open on your calendars for the 2018 Commodore’s Ball at Villa Penna’s in Sterling Heights. Linda and I want to wish good health and success to all of you. Rear Commodores Comments…

As we grow older, time seems to fly by and 2017 was no exception. It feels like it was just yesterday that we raised the flags under Commodore Pat’s command; but yet here we are with the club closed, boats put away and friends heading south and north. That being said, NCYC camaraderie never rests and there are events to attend: the First Mates Holiday Dinner on December 5th, ABYA Commodore’s ball on December 2nd, the Bowling league all winter long and the ringing in of our 2018 Commodore in January. I look forward attending many of these events and hope you do as well so that we can all stay in touch. I would like to congratulate and applaud the outgoing board members for their dedication and passion for the club’s advancement. Thank you PC Chuck Stroh, Kim Miedema, PC Tom McHugh, and Don Ruma. I recieved the following message from long time NCYC members Larry and Adrienne Gierlowdki regarding their son Paul. I might suggest if you can't navigate an on-line gifting page, send your gift to Adrienne at their address in the Roster. Our son, Paul Gierlowski, is very, very ill with two different kinds of cancer. He has been unable to work since August because of constant pain, which is some what under control now. He just finished four rounds of chemo which was only minimally effective. He is in the hospital now because he cannot keep anything down. On Iv's and a pic line as of this evening. Paul will soon be exhausting all his disability and will be required to pay for his own medical insurance. Paul leased a 2017 Dodge Ram last January. We are looking for someone to take over the lease ($300/mo) or buy out right. If anyone is interested, please call Larry at 586-244-2081. Our daughter, Laurie Edwards, has started a go fund me page on face book for her brother. Laurie says no amount is too small. Just go on face book and bring up the Paul Gierlowski cancer treatment page. If you need more info on this, please call Laurie at 586-822-0275. Hi Ladies:

We are quickly approaching the end of another year. The 2017 Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to say thank once again to all who participated in the First Mates events for the good of the club. We also extend our best wishes for a successful year to the First Mates President, Josette Campbell, and her 2018 Board members and to our Commodore, Randy Pagel, and the NCYC Board of Directors. The Christmas party turned out beautifully with good food and a lovely group of ladies. Thank you Sue Brooks and her team for a fun night. Congratulations to our new board members elect; they have been invited to the balance of our meetings to give them an idea of what to expect for next year. I hope we don’t scare them away. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Randy Pagel We had beautiful weather for Haul-Out weekend. We all survived the breeze Saturday night. We had a good membership meeting, a great dinner and a good time. I also want to welcome the newly elected directors. I look forward to working with them in 2018. I want to thank Kim for all of her hard work over the past three years; I appreciate you working with Debbie as we make this transition. Let’s invite some members that we haven’t seen in a while to help us close up the club in the next two weeks. Let’s continue to focus on obtaining new members in the off season. There are eight on the waiting list; we need to continue the trend and see if we can double that by the time January comes. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Ian Blackburn I’d like to welcome the newly elected directors to the board family. I would also like to welcome the returning directors and our new Rear Commodore elect. We have two working meeting left; so let’s focus, and wrap things up nice and tight so we can hit the ground running in 2018. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer The financial report was distributed via e-mail prior to the meeting and summarized. September 2017 revenue was $ 29,000 and expenses were $ 38,000 for a net loss of $ 9,400; all of the taxes were paid in the month of September. The cash position at the end of September is $187,000. The end of the year estimate is $184,000. Kim Miedema requested a review of membership revenue categories to ensure 50% of initiation fees are put into the emergency fund. MOTION: Moved by TomMartin and seconded by Scott Greenfelder to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Chuck Stroh The ABYA has launched a new website. Correspondence All No correspondence was received. CURRENT BUSINESS Activities – Tom Martin No report. Club House – Scott Greenfelder Preparation is under way for the work parties to shut down the club house. The water will be turned off and winterized on Sunday, 22 October, the day after the final work party. Scott is looking for parts to repair the stove before the club re-opens in the spring.

Harbor & Grounds – Bill Calihan Ice cluster quotes were presented to the board. The board discussed the configuration of the clusters in each of the quotes. Bill will get additional information to make the decision at the next meeting. Membership – Kim Miedema Final membership counts for 2017 are: Boating 148 Senior 46 Non-Boating 27 Leave of Absence 3 Honorary 1 Junior 27 Total Members 252 There are 8 on the waiting list: Tom & Therese Adamowski, Art & Mary Ashley, Glenn & Jennifer Franklin, Stewart & Andrea Ireland, David & Vicki Koch, Gilbert & Kristin Palmer, Sharon Sheroski and Rodney Soenen & Bonnie Lang. Kim distributed the Work-or-Pay accounting list; there is currently $1600 owed for work weekends during the season, and there are 72 members that still need work hours at one of the fall work parties. Any members that don’t get their spring or fall work party hours in will be charged $50 per hour for four hours. Identification of members in bad standing was brought up and discussed. A list of members in bad standing needs to be posted on the bulletin board or website for membership awareness. Members in bad standing are not allowed on the island. Publications – Ron Draper Ron discussed ideas to add additional content to the Beacon. He will also work to make older Beacons easier to find when the website is updated. Secretary – Glenn Nixon Absent – No Report Supplies – Dale Hall Three half-barrels of beer are available for the fall work parties. All supply related expenses for the year are complete. Transportation – Darryl Campbell Darryl suggested a Fan-Out to get more business for winter storage in the parking lot. Additionally, he recommended that we make lease agreement forms available on the website for non-members. Fleet Captain – P/C Tom McHugh Absent – No Report

NEW BUSINESS Manager’s Apartment Policy :

Scott Greenfelder Scott identified an issue with the current Manager’s Apartment policy. He recommended a first right of refusal policy to the Manager on Duty (Weekday Manager or Weekend OD). Further, the only members allowed to occupy the Manager’s Apartment are incoming or outgoing Manager’s on Duty. The board discussed the current policy. Scott will prepare a draft of the revised policy and forward it to the Policy Committee for review. The board will review and discuss the revision at the next Board of Directors meeting. 2018 Capital Projects : V/C Randy Pagel The window replacement can be performed this fall at a discount. Additionally, completing that portion of the project before winter will provide additional time to get the siding completed in the spring before the club re-opens. V/C Randy Pagel requested that the window replacement occur before the end of the year, but would like the expenditure to be reflected in 2018. Treasurer, Brian Fringer, will look into the appropriate method to handle the accounting. Robison Tie-backs : Commodore, Pat Carroll There are 16 broken tie-backs on the Robison and 6 broken tie-backs on the Genoa. It’s likely possible to repair those ourselves. However, sections of the seawall are in poor shape so we are requesting a quote to get 100 ft of sea-wall replaced. Once we have the quote, the board will be able to discuss options and authorize action. The board also discussed additional considerations regarding seawall replacement and restructuring boat wells on the west side of the island. Membership/Gift Cards : R/C Ian Blackburn Per our policy, gift cards that are inactive for 12 months are charged a $10 per month maintenance fee until a zero balance is achieved. After 24 months, the cards are not redeemable. There are many cards that can be de-activated and several cards that can be decremented based on inactivity. Actions will be taken to enact the maintenance fees based on our current policy. Member of the Month None Identified Good of the Order Kim Miedema recommended an addition to the policy regarding party weekends: The Board of Directors should officially decide and document the specific weekends that are categorized as party weekends at the beginning of each season. Doing so will make it clear when second boats and guest boats are not allowed on the island to allow our members to get a well. Those weekends, and the rules for those weekends, need to be communicated to the membership before the season starts, and they should be added to the event calendar. Bill Calihan stated that Art Brooks is home and asked that we keep him in our prayers. KimMiedema recommended that highly visible signs be posted at the entrances to the clubhouse stating that we are a private club and that guests must sign in immediately.

Kim Miedema recommended a policy that members be responsible for their guests who visit the island overnight but fail to pay their dockage. She also recommended that in addition to providing well receipts (with the rules on the back), a dated form (printed on bright paper) be displayed in the windows of visiting boats. Ron Draper recommended that our club policies be sent to the sponsors of incoming rendezvous or visiting groups before they visit the island. V/C Randy Pagel stated that he has identified a licensed builder for $500 to examine the clubhouse to comment on the structure and provide opinions for areas for improvement. MOTION: Moved by TomMartin and seconded by Ron Draper to approve the expense for the builder to examine the clubhouse and provide comments.
