March 2025 Beacon
Commodore’s Comments: PC Bill Burkhardt
Well, the ice is gone, and Finn 3 will be splashed in 2 weeks. Things are really starting to move along. The club will be open before we know it. We have a critical need for weekday managers the first 3 weeks of the year. Starting Monday May 12th for 3 consecutive weeks. Please if you can help out please give Colleen Braun a call. Even if it is for part of the week. We are putting the finishing touches on the agenda for the opening weekend which will be published in a couple of weeks. You should have or will see a fanout for our new Clubster software. This is going to be a game changer for the club, constant news feed, interactive calendar and much more. Keep an eye out for an email to sign up asap. Then feel free to play with it a bit to get used to it. It is pretty simple, if you can use Facebook you will have no issues with this. The First Mates Fashion Show is Sunday, April 27 at the Mirage 11:30 am, last year was great this year promises to be as well. Elite Brigade - This will be a much smaller group this year. We have only a couple of projects going. If you have carpentry or flooring experience please let me know asap. The Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner’s Church in Detroit was a beautiful service attended by PC Pagel, PC Rick and Jill Romatz, Rear Commodore Mark and Sharon Javery, Shelley and John
Swier, John and Samantha Hickey, John Mantyk, as well as Lady Susan and me. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the island very soon.
Warmest Regards,
Bill Burkhardt, Commodore
Vice Commodore Terry Steinmacher
Feels like spring has sprung already, our spring work parties are just right around the corner. So keep an eye out for the fan outs from Commodore Bill for what’s up and coming.
We all know it takes a village to get the Clubhouse, Grounds, Supplies and Transportation ready for the upcoming season, will need all hands on deck once we get started. This is a great time to put in your required four hrs. Meet some new member’s and let the friendships begin. So let’s roll up our sleeves and get her done! Can’t wait to see everyone on the island soon.

The weather seems to be finally breaking and the snow and ice are melting away. March is bringing us longer days, more sun, and the realization our boating season is right around the corner. Last weekend was The Blessing of the Fleet held annually at The Mariners Church in Detroit. Attendance at this event has opened up the opportunity for any NCYC member to attend. It is a special/moving service that includes the blessing of our very own NCYC flag. I would recommend that everyone experience this service at least once. Hope you can join your Flag and Directors next year. April 27th is the First Mates Fashion Show being held at Mirage Banquet Center in Clinton Township. Please support this event. Our First Mates put on an excellent event and the funds they raise are returned to our Club providing financing for many projects in the clubhouse and around the island. There are still opportunities to step up and assist your Club in being a weekday manager or weekday team member. You will have fun and learn a lot about your NCYC. Contact Colleen and Ron Braun to assist. Lastly, start planning on attending the spring work parties being held on May 10th and May 17th. It’ll be here before you know it! R/C Mark
A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
Since our last Beacon was published I have not been made aware of any in our membership who are hospitalized or have had a diagnosis of a new illness. Bob Fringer is home now and continues his rehabilitation, keep those prayers coming. It is virus season and many in our membership have been ill. Pray for our membership to remain in good health and for protection from sickness. March does mean the official beginning of spring, a season of rebirth, renewal, and longer days. In our Christian faith March is also a time many observe Lent. Many think of Lent as just a season of self-denial. Yet is a good time for self-examination, and renewal like spring. Growing up our family did not observe Lent and it was later in life I appreciated its significance. The Three Pillars of Lent: Prayer: Try to make a conscious effort to spend more time in prayer, not just as a formality but true heartfelt conversation with our Lord. Fasting: While the act of abstaining from food can be a tool for spiritual discipline, remember that true fasting goes beyond the physical realm. It can mean giving up distractions, habits, or anything that keeps us from time with God. Giving: Be compassionate and generous to those in need. This goes beyond material things, but also about giving your time, talents, and heart in service to others.
As you experience Lent in your own way embrace it with an open heart and mind. Draw closer to God, grow your faith, work on a life pleasing to Him. May this time of Lent lead you to a richer more meaningful Easter.
It’s February and even though Phil the groundhog didn’t give us the news we may have wanted, let’s think about doing something meaningful and memorable during these extra wintery days. Spend some time with family and friends or take a vacation. Maybe think of getting organized for a Spring garage sale or give the boat a little extra love while she’s up. Life gets busy.......try to enjoy the things that bring us joy and happiness!

My attention now turns to the vision and plan for 2025. I have already spent time updating all the tasks, open initiatives, and other projects that I in vison and aligns with members that have similar desire, would like to see done this year. Some projects may require additional support, but we have plenty of initiatives that will work within the budget. I have had some members express interest and/or committed to help on the H&G sub-committee so that they will not only provide other available H&G resources on any given day to help or communicate too, but also to get more done in 2025. Again, thanks to all that have helped with projects large and small and supported me in learning about this
treasure of an island we share. Respectfully, John O’Leary

John O’Leary
Good day fellow NCYC members, Hope this finds you all in good health and spirits.
We’re only a couple months away from all the work and fun in preparation for another boating season. There was an initiative put on the table to develop sub-committees to support many of the Directors that will provide more resources to be available to the members in communicating concerns and/or sharing ideas, learn how respective departments run and learn the responsibilities. Sharing tribal knowledge only makes the bench deeper and more efficient. I have received commitments from a few members and will have finalized the next report. A lot of planning and thoughts under way for this season. Some ideas might need additional help or support in making them come to realization and will share some of those thoughts soon. Until then, stay safe, pray for higher water and climbing temps. Again, thanks to all that have supported us in projects large and small and improving our little
treasure of an island we share. Respectfully, John O’Leary

Clubster Update/Demo -
Melissa Winkler
Melissa is very excited to have our club transition into using Clubster. The features that were discussed: - Calander for Events, times and using R.S.V.P. for those events. - Club Groups; Melissa can create groups within this program, such as Board Members, First Mates, Ancient Mariners, NCYC Bowling League. information - Events can be exported onto Facebook - Reminders of events can go out - Everything will be in one program and saved for the future - The rollout strategy - Commodore Bill Burkhardt supported the transition to Clubster as the primary communication platform - The group decided to use Club Express for administrative tasks and membership tracking and Clubster for communication and engagements - Bill Frederiksen stated, In the near-term, the intent would be to retain ClubExpress for administrative functions and to be the "internet facing" presence for NCYC. Clubster is for members only and will be the primary web/app for communications, calendaring, and other member-centric functions.
