North Channel Yacht Club April 2024 Beacon
Commodore’s Comments: PC Rick Romatz Hello NCYC Members,
I hope all is well with you and your families. As we move into April with this great weather, we have had with an early spring I’m sure all of you are like us getting excited to get the boats ready for the water and get this 2024 boating season underway, With that being said it’s also time to wake up the old girl “North Channel Yacht Club Island and Clubhouse” and get our Paradise in the Sun ready for a great 2024 season. April 13th starts our Elite Brigade weekend through May 4th, followed by the 2 work parties May 11th and May 18th to get the Girl ready for opening weekend May 24th. So, mark your Calendars and make some time to come on out and join us. It’s a great time, a good way to make new friends and a good opportunity to fulfill your 4 hr Spring or Fall work obligations. The Flag and Board of Directors are hard at work putting the plans together for our spring Elite and spring work parties together Harbor and Grounds director John O’Leary and Clubhouse director Bill Frederiksen have their spring project and opening of the club duty schedules and list ready. The Fin leaves the dock at 8-9 am we get as much work completed by 12-1 o’clock when lunch is served. My wife Jill our 1st Lady and a team have some awesome ideas for some great rewarding lunches planned for these 6 Saturday’s getting the girl ready. Our Fleet Captains Shelly and Gary Schroka are busy getting the plans together for the 2024 Rendezvous watch for future notifications with details and if you have any questions feel free to reach out to them.
I want to say Thank you to all of the members that came out for the Casino & Pub Crawl Winter Day Bus Trip March 23 Party in the ‘D’ a great time was had by all Thank you Jill for making all the arrangements to make this event such a success! See you on the Island soon.
2024 Commodore PC Rick Romatz
Vice Commodore Bill Burkhardt
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter Holiday. Spring has sprung and the club opening is right around the corner. It is spring training in Florida and soon to be here at NCYC as well. Before you know it, we will be on the island getting NCYC ready for a great 2024 season. This is also a good time to do mental spring training by pulling last year's Roster and reading/reviewing the Policies and By-Laws, so you are familiar with how the club operates. When going through it it is important to know that By-Laws always supersede policy in the book. It can be a little dry, so might I suggest a beer or cocktail while you read. Finally, let’s remember we are ALL guests of the club, and we should treat each other that way. All workers are volunteers and doing their best for the club. If we all treat each other as guests and respect each other this will be the best year ever!!! In the meantime, GO TIGERS!!! Vice Commodore Bill Burkhardt
Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher April 13th is upon us and our first elite brigade is in our sites. We all know it takes a village to get the
Clubhouse and Grounds ready for the upcoming season, we will defiantly need all hands-on deck once again, this season to complete a couple of much needed projects. So, let’s roll up our sleeves, work up an appetite and get her done! I would like to thank all our directors, and all our behind-the-scenes team, for working so diligently over the winter months preparing for the upcoming season. I am very excited for you to see them in action. I have some exciting news for you. I would like to announce that the 2026 Commodores Ball is being held on Saturday January 17, 2026 at Petruzzello’s 6950 Rochester Rd. Troy, Mi 48085. We will keep you posted as we get more information. 2024 Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher
A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
This month our membership seems to be doing pretty good. Continue to pray for those in our club family dealing with chronic health conditions. Pray also for safety and journey mercies for our members returning home from their winter havens. This year, to me, our winter season sure seemed like a tough one. Granted, for Michigan it was not super cold or snowy. Whether it was because of the chaos in our world today, having a slow surgery recovery, or just because I’m getting older it sure seemed like a long winter. At or on the water has always been one of my “happy places” and certainly a place where I feel the presence of God and the love of our Lord. God’s majesty is displayed in every sunrise and sunset on the water. Every one unique in their beautiful shades of color, no two ever the same. When storms come through I feel His power and might… Hopefully safely in harbor. When Jesus was on the earth he must have loved the sea also. So many stories in the Bible place Jesus on the sea or at the beach. He called disciples to follow him walking along the Sea of Galilee, calling Peter and Andrew to be fishers of men. In the gospel of Matthew Jesus was sleeping on a boat as a storm came up that made his disciples afraid. With the return of some decent weather days it was nice to return to the marina and take a moment to sit and look out on our beautiful lake.
They awakened Jesus and he used His power to calm the sea saving the boat from sinking. Jesus walked on water and after He was resurrected he stood on the beach at dawn before his disciples. After a night of fishing with not a catch he told his disciples to cast their net on the other side of the boat, and their nets became full. A miracle as he stood on the beach.
Time after time Jesus used the backdrop of the sea to show His power and love for humanity.
As you enjoy the beauty of his creation and surely the beauty of boating on our unsalted Great Lakes take a moment to reflect that His love for you is fathomless.
We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter holiday! If you are not a First Mate, membership is sƟll available. The deadline has passed to be included in this years roster, but membership is always open. Commodore’s Comments Commodore, Rick Romatz Welcome to the March 7, 2024, Board of Directors Meeting. Let me start by saying thank you all. This Board continues to show its commitment to teamwork to work together to get the job done. Most recently with the email issue and Club Express, Bill Frederiksen and Melissa Winkler working together with Club Express and their support techs to get the issues and it appears to me the problem seems to be getting corrected; the only thing I’m finding in my trash and spam files is my Fanouts. Another example is the nice job with the activity survey that went out to the membership. Thank you to all that worked with Philip, Bill F and the team. I participated in the survey and thought the questions would be very good and I heard the response was very good. Also, in Shelley’s absence to keep the wheels turning Christa, Mark, and RC Terry stepped up to get the new member interviews completed and ready for approval this evening. NCYC teamwork makes the dream work. Thank You to RC Terry Steinmacher and Kathy Fowler and all the members that participated in Pinball Sunday. It was a good turnout by the members. I hope we have as good of a turn out March 23 rd for the Casino & Pub Crawl Winter Day Trip. This is something that hasn’t been done at NCYC in q uite some time.
Thank You Commodore PC Rick Romatz

Harbor & Grounds
Good day from Harbor & Grounds, I trust this message reaches you all in good spirits and health.
The education towards learning the H&G position and responsibilities continues for me. The good news is I have a great mentor and awesome support team. Dare I suggest, most of that team will not be of an official position, but the work horse members that show up to help with EVEYTHING!! My previous awareness as to the commitment and effort of our Board and Flag required to lead and preserve our Island, ensure the enjoyment and comradery that it brings to all its members, has developed into an overwhelming respect and appreciation of the commitment and effort they exude to make and keep this club a jewel on the lake. Many thanks to all that have already served in any of these previous capacities. Again, I remain open and encourage that you share any good ideas to foster more enjoyment and comradery for the members. Once the opening of the island is complete, it will be time to turn to improvements and repairs. Please do not hesitate to share your suggestions via text to my cell, 810.499.9125 or through surveys or club suggestion box. Look forward to enjoying our little island of paradise with you in 45 days or less. A reminder that the first Elite Brigade work party is scheduled for Saturday April 13 th . If it takes a village to raise a child, we need an army to support and nurture this island.
