It is truly an honor and pleasure to work with such a great group of ladies and gentlemen it makes my job much easier. Thank You All!

In closing I would like to say Thank You and Good Luck to all the newly nominated Candidates for stepping up for the upcoming 2025 NCYC Officers Election. Your courage and commitment to North Channel Yacht Club is greatly appreciated good luck to all of you. See you on the Island! Thank You 2024 Commodore PC Rick Romatz

Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher First, I would like to thank Our Directors, Clubhouse Managers, and all the behind-the-scenes members

that have stepped up and accepted their positions and are keeping up with their prospective job duties as they strive to keep our club running like a well-oiled machine for everyone’s enjoyment. Without these people our club would not be as it is today. Also, I would like to thank the Flag, Board and the membership for all your support and understanding that you have given Kathy and myself this summer. With the setbacks that we had with the boat, and emergency surgery this summer our involvement was a little less this year, but we expect a full recovery and will be back in action before the holidays. With the upcoming election please show your support for your favorite candidates so they can help move our club forward in the coming year. Please make your vote count and turn in your ballots either by mail or the drop box in the club house. 2024 Rear Commodore Terry Steinmacher

Vice Commodore Bill Burkhardt

Hard to believe summer is already coming to an end once again flying by.

This year once again the nominating committee had a tough job filling all of the open spots and actually had to work much harder than they should have to. We currently have an excellent board, but that can only be maintained if people are willing to step up and serve this great organization. The brilliance of our past officers has set up a system where you join the club. Get to know the club and its members, then hopefully step up and serve in some capacity for a period of time, then return back to being a member. We can all use the excuse that we “don’t have time”. The reality is we make time for what is important. We have lots of talent and ability in our membership and we really need people to look at stepping up and serving. I was bugged and recruited 4-5 years ago, I had some of the same concerns as many of you, can I do it, do I have time to do it. Here is what I can promise you as a result if you say yes. 1. You will be serving with like-minded people who want the best for the club. 2. It is a lot of work, yet very rewarding. 3. You will make some new truly lifelong friends as a result. 4. You will gain a further appreciation for the club. 5. You will not regret the decision, I promise. So, for next year please give it some thought to stepping up your club needs you!! We have a Save-The-Date …..the 2025 Commodore’s Ball will be on January 11th.

The block is open for reservations, and will also be hosting a dinner event at War Water Brewery on Friday, Jan 10th. If you call in make sure you call the main line at the Inn. 2025 Commodores Cruise is set. You should have seen 1 or more fanouts. It is going to be a great trip for those who can attend. Please feel free to contact me or Susan with any questions or if you need any information. Let’s finish strong in 2024!! Yours Truly Bill Burkhardt Vice Commodore

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

Since our last Beacon was published Director Tom Lisowski had a heart procedure and is home recovering. Also, John (Rocky) Richards is home recovering from knee replacement. Both procedures reportedly went well but do keep them in your thoughts and prayers for speedy recoveries. Where has summer gone, maple trees are turning red already, and nights have a feel of autumn. Vacations and most of our boating is now sweet memories. The school year has resumed and many families will be pulled in different directions. For many, less time for rest and relaxation.

Although our Lord didn’t take “vacations” he did take time to rest and enjoy fellowship with friends.

If fall is a time that you get busier make sure you set aside time for yourself and time to have communion with Christ. Take time to watch the changing colors of God’s creation and thank Him for his handiwork.

After all Jesus came not only to save the world from our sins but to lift our daily burdens and give rest to our weary souls.

It is quickly approaching and sad to say the end of our boaƟng and summer season is near. Luckily, we have the beauƟful colors of Michigan’s Fall season to look forward to. We hope everyone that aƩended the First Mates Tropical Polish Dinner enjoyed themselves. The food was fantasƟc and aŌer dinner we danced unƟl midnight to the music from the band. Thank you to all the First Mates whose efforts made this another memorable weekend at NCYC! Date to remember:  Saturday, October 5 th is Haul Out weekend with the First Mates General Membership meeƟng in the clubhouse @ 10:00am with announcement of 2025 First Mates Board of Directors elecƟon results. Please consider taking part in our 2024 charitable project to support “The Macomb Charitable FoundaƟon: Serving Underprivileged Children”. The donaƟon jars are in the clubhouse and donaƟons will be accepted throughout the holiday season. See aƩached flyer for more details. The BouƟque is always available for your shopping fix while on the island. You can never have enough NCYC logo wear. Visit us next Ɵme you are at the club to receive an end-of-season discount on select items.

Our Christmas party plans are underway. Save the date for Thursday, December 5 th at Watermark Bar and Grille in St. Clair Shores. See aƩached flyer for more details.

September is a transiƟon month between Summer and Fall. With its crisp air and falling leaves, it presents an opportunity to embrace changes in our lives. Make it a September to remember!

Commodore’s Comments Commodore, Rick Romatz Welcome to August 7, 2024, Board of Directors Meeting. This Board continues to show its commitment to teamwork, to work together to get the job done. I think we are having a great ride through the 2024 boating season. Looking back at July through early August, Fleet Captains Shelly and Gary and Team did an awesome job again with the 2 nd Rendezvous at Cove Marina in Tilbury Ontario with a great turn out from the membership. Jill, Shelby and a huge team put together an awesome Kids Day one that I’m sure the kids will have memories for a long time, it was one of the biggest attended Kids Day in awhile; it was great to see the faces on all of our children, thank you to most of the people sitting in this room for your help making this event successful. Lastly the Ancient Mariners Horse Race Fundraiser was a great success, also what a great turn out of members and the donations for the live auction were great. Looking at this agenda there are many important things to start thinking about to review and approve like the upcoming 2024 election process and By-law changes and the 2025 Budgets, Forecasts and Projects for the upcoming year. I’m confident this Board wi ll make the right decisions.

Vice Commodore, Bill Burkhardt

East Harbor Lease – Update

PC Hall reported the following update:

1) After meeting Kevin Hertel (Michigan State Senator) at the Boat-for-Vets events at Harbor Club on Saturday, June 15th we have some movement in the long delayed renewal of the NCYC East Harbor Lease 2) Thanks to Kevin Hertel's office I received a call from Chris Antieau at EGLE (Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy) on Friday, June 21st to reassure me that the NCYC Lease renewal is still in process. 3) Chris advised that NCYC would NOT be able to purchase the bottomlands that make up the East Harbor. Although some properties have been deeded and sold by the State of Michigan, bottomlands are NOT eligible for sale/purchase. Only islands and mainland. 4) For bottomland leases, only 25 year agreements are being written by the State of Michigan. The 50 year lease that NCYC enjoyed for so long, is NOT an option. 5) Chris suggested that NCYC change from a "marina" status to a "Private Club" status as the yearly lease payment will be less. 6) Chris estimates that the yearly cost will be between $3500-$4000 per year as compared to the $150 per year that NCYC has been paying for 50 years. 7) Chris advised that he has the NCYC application from August 2022 and our payment but, stated that the survey of the NCYC property that was loaded to the website was not legible. I sent a new (scanned) survey to Chris on 7/8/23. Chris also stated that a letter of approval was also needed from the Clay Township Board of Directors & Commissioner. 8) On Monday 7/8/23 I forwarded all the necessary documents to Township Assessor Chari Lawton to get us on the agenda for township approval. Chari stated that the next available meeting was August 5, 2024. I have NOT received a confirmation that we are on that agenda as of this date. - On August 7 th I received confirmation from Chari that our application was Approved at the August 5, 2024 meeting. 9) As soon as we receive the Letter of Approval/Resolution from Clay Township, we will send it to Chris Antieau to continue the process.

P.S.: In the Fall of 2023, Chris Antieau provided a 1 year lease extension to NCYC at the existing price of $150 and assured NCYC that "IF" a new lease was not completed in 2024 that another 1 year extension would be granted.

Clubhouse

The Clubhouse remains in good working order. However, we have some issues that will need addressing before the year is out. We have an issue with the subfloor and tile in the back kitchen. The subfloor appears to be water damaged and will require replacing with new tile installed over it. The extent of the damage and repair is not yet known. I’m cautiously optimistic that we can “get by” until later in the season before we need to pull up the floor. Based on feedback from the board and membership, we’ll be looking to replace the broken freezer behind the bar with another refrigerator. The consensus is the bar can benefit from additional refrigerator storage behind the bar. I am hoping to have that refrigerator replaced in August. Other outstanding items to be completed before year end is to ensure the new walk-in cooler is on generator power, and that we have replaced the in-ground drainage for the back of clubhouse downspouts to the east harbor drain. Outside of these issues, the Clubhouse remains in good shape. As always, I appreciate the support of the membership in identifying issues and in many cases addressing them directly. Fortunately, mother nature has spared us from any more surprises. Last month I missed an acknowledgement. We removed that large, compromised branch on the maple tree near Robison. Thank you Jack Lucido & Ed Mizgalski for assisting with removal on short notice. We finished the priority painting projects to help freshen up the appearance of several areas and are in planning stages for maintenance to the parking lot on the mainland. Tentatively scheduled for week of Sept 4 th to have mainland parking lot scrapped and additional limestone added. New signage for both mainland and harbor has been procured and will be installed soon. Have more small projects in process. Getting pricing for signage for labeling well numbers, looking at replacement light posts along river and the few lamp posts that were accidently damaged. I appreciate those that have taken time to share thoughts on other opportunities for improvement that need attention or consideration. The most impressive thing about this is that many have not only shared their opportunity but have engaged in implementing and/or procuring their suggestions. Nothing better than helping where and when possible. Says a lot about our members. Have reviewed the survey responses and have them factored them in for future opportunities. All positive and helpful feedback. John O’Leary requested approval for parking lot regrade and addition of limestone (option B per St. Clair Grading, vendor proposal). The merry-go-round looks amazing and has brought so much joy to our younger members. Both of you embody the spirit of the club, and we are grateful for everything you do. Welcome to the Order of the Anchor. NCYC Flag and Board
