Record Season for Little Tern Conservation C entral Coast Council has recently confirmed at least 96 birds successfully fledged at the end of summer. This result breaks last season’s record of 53 successfully fledged Little Terns. Karagi Point, The Entrance North has been the site of a second consecutive record-breaking breeding season for the endangered Little Tern last season. Council’s Acting Section Manager Environmental Infrastructure Matthew Barnett said “A lot of work goes into preparing and monitoring the nesting site and we’re so glad to see that our hard work has paid off to help Little Terns breed and protect their young. The more people we can get on board to do the right thing, the more we can do to save these special birds.” Council’s conservation efforts have included: enhancing the habitat, such as sand-building to elevate the nesting areas, installing fencing to prevent people and dogs disturbing the nesting areas, controlling foxes, weekly monitoring and data management, ongoing community engagement, collecting rubbish in and around the nesting site as required. Council’s Little Tern conservation project is delivered in partnership with the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program via the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Biodiversity Conservation Division. The Little Tern is listed as an endangered species in NSW. Its population is estimated to be declining by approximately five per cent annually. NPWS Threatened Species Officer, Katherine Howard said NPWS has been delighted to support Council in successfully managing The Entrance nesting site, which has produced such fantastic results again this year. “Our thanks also to the local residents and beach visitors for respecting the fenced area and ‘sharing the shore’ so successfully with Little Terns,” Ms Howard said. This season’s record-breaking result is particularly important as several historically important Little Tern nesting sites elsewhere in NSW have had limited success. This has placed extra emphasis on Karagi Point as a significant nesting site of state-wide importance. The majority of the birds have now moved on to quieter, more remote areas of Tuggerah Lakes and rock platforms further north where they will forage to put on weight before migrating north in April. Conservatorium of Music - The Keyboard Club C entral Coast Conservatorium of Music (CCCM) is excited to welcome acclaimed pianist Katy Tsai to the teaching staff – an appointment that coincides with the launch of the Keyboard Club.. “I still vividly remember my first piano lesson. My mum asked me in front of the teacher whether I’d like to learn the piano – little did I know that my “YES” would take me on the journey of a lifetime! It’s more important than ever to ensure that children have strategies in place that can help them find balance, joy and happiness." With a deep personal understanding of how music can bring a dramatic shift in energy levels, mindset and emotions, Katy is focused on creating music that promotes the well-being and mindfulness of others. Her albums are especially designed for yoga, meditation and healing through the soothing vibrations of acoustic instruments. Keyboard Club offers low-cost group keyboard lessons to students from K – 10 on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The weekly Keyboard Club lessons – aimed at students who have no previous experience with the goal of developing basic musicianship skills and a love for music. Students can register at https://centralcoastconservatorium.com.au/enquire or Phone 4324 7477. Katy was born and raised in Taiwan, where she was first introduced to the piano at age 5 despite being born into a family of sporting champions, none of whom are musically inclined.

Patonga Beach is a charming fishing village beside the Hawkesbury River and Brisbane Water National Park. A tranquil seaside village with a calm bay which is perfect for swimming, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Arrive for the day by ferry from Palm Beach or stay for the weekend at the Patonga Campground and head to the newly refurbished Boathouse Hotel Patonga for lunch, dinner and drinks. At the southern end of Patonga Beach,

you will find the estuary of Patonga Creek, which is surrounded by Brisbane Water National Park. The creek is shallow and edged by mangroves. From the creek, you can observe lots of birds in their natural habitat. Kayaking and canoeing are the best ways to discover the beauty of Brisbane National Park. There are several tourist operators that offer half-day or full-day tours. PLEASE NOTE: lifeguards do not patrol Patonga Beach. “Be careful in and near

Patonga Creekmouth as it contains strong tidal currents and deeper channels”. A moderately challenging day walk through red gums and eucalypts, the Patonga to Pearl Beach walking track takes in a stunning lookout and ends at the ocean in either direction. 3km one way (approx 2 hours). It's a good idea to let someone know where you're going. Families visit Patonga primarily to get away from it all. There is a wharf, a boat ramp and a childrens' play area.

Why is phosphorus important? Phosphorus is needed for healthy growth and development in children. It helps tissue repair and maintenance and supports bodily energy production. Phosphorus is also important for helping maintain the body’s healthy acid/alkali balance and cell membrane structural integrity. Are you getting enough calcium? Calcium is the most prevalent mineral in the human body so it is important to ensure that our Calcium intake is adequate. A diet high in Calcium is the natural starting point. Organic milk, tofu, natural yoghurt and cheese, nuts, kelps and canned fish with bones are all good sources of calcium. Of course you also can’t go past great Chia Seeds...but make sure they are black & from Volcanic soil. Even though these foods offer a good source of Calcium, your bodies changing Calcium requirements mean that you may not be getting enough. Testing Calcium levels in blood is not ideal for assessing Calcium status in the body due to homeostasis, which will generally ensure that there is between 8.6 to 10.3 mg/dL. When Calcium levels in the blood fall, the Parathyroid glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH) which increases your blood Calcium levels. If the calcium levels are too high, the parathyroid glands will stop releasing PTH to try to bring the Calcium back down to normal. Taking the wrong form of Calcium supplement at higher doses may have adverse effects including kidneys stones, hardened arteries, hardening of the bladder walls (incontinence) and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

ASK THE EXPERT

GEOFF GARLINGE

Q: I’m confused whether I do need to take Calcium and if so which form is the best. Please help as I don’t trust all the online marketing A: Confusion works well in marketing, especially where it’s more prevalent than anywhere else on the internet superhighway as multitudes are continually run over by Dr Google & its A classic case in point is the Calcium space, where Calcium Carbonate (Caltrate) is promoted to be the solution when in reality it’s basically chalk – and having continually observed negative bone density reports clearly showing decline over several decades, it’s how the bones end as they become thinner and more brittle before the most typical hip fracture. Even with the addition of D3 & Boron (which in any case should not always be prescribed in isolation across the board) it’s not the answer. As always bio-availability i.e. absorption is the key in line with the integrity of the Natural substance (in this case Mineral) and the following good news is contributed by my long term colleagues from Interclinical Laboratories who are themselves people of integrity who exercise genuine duty of care in the education and provision of excellent products such as Reparen. Reparen is a bone, tissue and muscle support and maintenance mineral supplement that supplies the body with a ready source of nutritional calcium and phosphate. It contains monobasic calcium phosphate, a special water-soluble, ionic form of calcium which helps support healthy bones, tissue repair and muscle function. Calcium and phosphorus are integral to bone, tissue, muscle, cartilage and connective tissue structural integrity. They are essential nutrients for a wide range of physiological functions and needs in the body. Soluble Calcium Calcium is an important factor in many cellular processes. Calcium supplements come in various forms with differing levels of solubility. Reparen has the benefit of being soluble both in water and stomach acid, so it can be easily broken down and readily absorbed, making it a gentle option as well as good for people with lower stomach acid due to age or illness. Ionic calcium Reparen uses a form of calcium phosphate which rapidly dissolves to provide the body with a ready source of ionic or free, physiologically active calcium. In the body, ionised calcium represents the calcium that is most metabolically active. Solid evidence has demonstrated for decades that ionised calcium rather than total calcium is the physiologically pertinent component of blood calcium. [Ref. Calvi L. et al. When is it appropriate to order an ionized calcium test? J Am. Soc. Nephrol. 2008:19; 1257-60] Calcium phosphate Calcium and phosphorus are important essential minerals individually, but they also act synergistically within the body to support bone, tissue, muscle, cartilage, tendon, ligament, skin and teeth health. Why is calcium important? Calcium is not only important for bone health, it’s also required for healthy muscular contraction and relaxation and plays a role in normal cell division. Calcium has a role in the conduction of nerve impulses as well as neurotransmitter and hormone release. It also supports healthy heart function by playing a vital role in the heartbeat’s regulatory cycle. Calcium is involved in digestion; additionally, it carries out a vital role in various enzymes responsible for fat digestion and protein metabolism. smoke & mirrors.

Who needs more Calcium? There are many groups of people who may benefit with additional calcium including athletes, children, teenagers, pregnantwomen, menopausal women, the elderly, vegans and vegetarians. Reparen’s form of Calcium is generally considered safe for all groups. Pregnant women may take Reparen to support their own health as well as healthy foetal development. Young children from

the age of one year may take Reparen to aid in the development and growth of healthy teeth and bones. It is also important for muscle function and energy and the capsule can simply be crushed into yoghurt, honey or a smoothie. Professional athletes, menopausal women, young and older people will often use Reparen to assist with supporting energy production, bone strength and density, healthy body tissues, as well as cartilage health. Supplemental phosphorous has also become better understood due to the growing awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy acid/alkali balance in the body. Research The importance of Calcium and Phosphorous in the maintenance of bone integrity and bodily tissues is well documented. Over the course of 30 years’ research, Leonid L Shafransky discovered the use of monobasic calcium phosphate in human health, using infrared spectroscopy analysis, he showed that monobasic calcium phosphate was an essential compound in binding organic and non-organic components within tissue structures. Shafransky found that by supplementing with monobasic Calcium phosphate he was able to help support and maintain the balance of Calcium and phosphate in the body. His findings suggest that therapeutic amounts of monobasic Calcium phosphate can help the repair and maintenance of normal tissues. Reparen is a clinically developed nutritional supplement for bone strength, muscle function and heart heath that supplies the body with a ready source of Calcium phosphate. It contains only monobasic Calcium phosphate, a special water-soluble, ionic form of Calcium which helps support healthy bones, tissue and muscle function as well as maintaining nervous system and digestive health. So if you take or require a Calcium supplement, you will be best served by switching to Reparen to meet your needs.

Having a sick or injured dog or cat and not knowing what to do and what treatment is required in some cases can become a life- threatening situation. Minimise the panic associated with potential emergency situations by being prepared and educated when it comes to providing first aid care to pets. Pet First Aid Tips

F or any snake bite , it is essential to take your pet to the vet straight away. If possible, call ahead to let the vet know you're coming. If you see the snake, observe its colours and markings - do not attempt to catch or kill it. Often the bite site is not obvious, but if you can, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the area. Keep your pet calm and restrict their movement as much as possible, to slow down the spread of the venom. If the bite is from a venomous snake, then treatment with anti venom by your veterinarian as soon as possible after the bite will give your pet the best chance of making a full recovery. Spider bites , Apply a cold pack to the area if swollen and contact a vet for advice if you notice signs of a reaction such as difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhoea or collapse. Seizures can be scary for pets and pet parents. If your pet experiences a seizure, it is important to ensure that they are safe and cannot hurt themselves by moving any furniture away that may injure them. Do not attempt to restrain your pet or place your hand in their mouth as they may accidentally bite you. Most seizures last 2-3 minutes. Once your pet's seizure has stopped, it is best to keep them as quiet as possible and contact your veterinarian. If the seizure does not stop or your pet has multiple seizures in a short period of time, then it is important to see your veterinarian immediately. Paralysis Ticks If you think you have found a tick on your pet, the first step is to carefully try to remove the tick by grasping the head of the tick. Avoid pressing on or rupturing the body of the tick during removal. A "Tick Twister Tool" is a great addition to any Pet First Aid Kit as these make removing ticks at home a lot easier. If you are not confident in your ability to remove the tick then you can ask your vet to remove it. Not all ticks are paralysis ticks, so identification of the tick is important to know if your pet is at risk. Paralysis ticks can

and Sultanas, Garlic and Onions, Rodent Poison, Panadol and Ibuprofen, Lily Flowers, Cleaning Chemicals. Bleeding cut or wound , apply pressure using a clean towel or gauze. Be cautious as pets who are scared or in pain may bite or scratch. All but the most minor of wounds should be assessed by a vet due to the risk of infection and damage to underlying tissues. If there is a mild wound, trying cleaning the area with some diluted Betadine or warm salty water and apply a pet antiseptic lotion to protect against infection. It is important that your pet does not lick the area excessively as this will increase the chance of a secondary infection establishing. If your pet is licking, an Elizabethan Collar may be required for a few days. If the wound gets bigger, starts to look moist or develops a discharge, or if your pet continues to lick the area, then visit your vet. Broken toe nail may not seem like an emergency situation, injured toe nails can bleed a lot when they first occur, and can be alarming for pet parents. Broken toe nails are a common issue seen by veterinarians, and usually occur when a pet gets their toe nail caught when jumping or running. This can be very painful, and the trauma can result in bleeding from the nail, swelling or limping. If your pet injures their toe nail and it is bleeding, apply gentle pressure or a light bandage to help stop the bleeding. It is best to have your vet check the wound as broken toe nails can be very painful and prone to infection, so medication and bandaging may be required. Keeping your pets toe nails short by clipping, especially the dewclaws, can help to minimise the likelihood of this occurring. be deadly so if your pet is showing signs of tick paralysis such as weakness, vomiting or difficulty breathing seek immediate veterinary assistance. When it comes to ticks, prevention is better than cure. Ensuring your pet is covered with tick prevention year round is the best way to protect your pet from deadly tick paralysis. Diarrhoeaor Vomiting can occur in dogs and cats for many reasons. If your pet experiences a gastrointestinal upset and you are not sure of the cause, monitor them closely and make sure they are drinking enough water. Start a bland diet such as chicken and boiled rice or Prescription Veterinary Gastrointestinal Diets, can help resolve mild cases. If symptoms continue, they are a puppy or kitten, they get worse, they refuse to eat or your pet seems otherwise unwell, then it's time to see your vet. Exposure to household toxins the general rule is that if it can be harmful to people, it can be harmful to our pets. Some common toxins that can be dangerous to dogs and cats include exposure to cleaning chemical or ingestion of rodent poisons, human medications, plants and human foods. If your pet has been exposed to a chemical then check the label for further instruction on how to treat exposure in humans and follow the instructions for your pet, such as washing the area with water. Then your pet should see your veterinarian immediately. Let your vet know what product your pet was exposed to, to formulate the best treatment plan for your pet. If your dog or cat has recently ingested a toxic or foreign substance, speak with your veterinarian as soon as possible. If caught early enough, your veterinarian can use a safe and reversible medication to induce vomiting if required in some cases, to reduce any toxic effects. It is not recommended to try and induce vomiting at home as this can be very difficult, and may result in severe side effects.. Common Household Toxins: Chocolate, Grapes

What is the best flooring - Laminate, Bamboo or Timber? E ach has advantages and your choice will depend on what you are looking to achieve. For some a quick revamp prior

timber that allows the floor to be sanded back a number of times. The product is extremely dimensionally stable (doesn't warp or twist), can be laid immediately and is easy to keep clean. Like bamboo, engineered timber comes pre-finished and ready to walk on. Impact resistance depends on the species of wood. Being a natural material there is usually a wider range of features and colour ranges in floor boards, so don't rely on a single small sample to give you the full picture. Choices include Australian managed-forest hardwood species such as Blackbutt and Spotted Gum etc, as well as plantation sourced species like Kempas and Merbeau. In any species you have a choice of length and width of the timber strips and the cost falls between 1 strip (longer wider boards), 2 strip and 3 strip (shorter narrower boards). It is a more cost effective option

to selling; for some durability to survive beach sand, children and pets; for others a stylish finish to their new home. Choosing the right flooring may require a discussion with an experienced professional and a visit to a good showroom. Putting samples down in your home is also valuable to ensure it looks as good 'on-site'. So what are the qualities of each option? Laminate flooring is made of the same material as kitchen bench tops, but is substantially harder, making it extremely resistant to scratching. This is the most cost effective and options range from budget 7mm boards to 12mm realistic Aussie Colours. You cannot re-sand a laminate floor and in 20-25 years time you will lift and replace it. Strand woven bamboo is created by compressing bamboo fibres under high pressure to form the hardest of any flooring in Australia. Pre-finished with 6 layers of ceramic varnish gives a highly durable surface, resistant to household and commercial traffic. Available in semi gloss or matt finish, it comes in 20+ different colours. Bamboo is considered an environmentally sound choice and is highly sustainable. It is generally cheaper than engineered timber options, but avoid thin boards (less than 14mm) from one- off suppliers. Mostly made in China, quality is not consistent across providers. Engineered timber has a 'dress' layer of

The Coast's First dedicated Dry Eye Clinic

C entral Coast residents will now have access to leading edge technology for dry eye syndrome, as the Coast’s very first independently owned and dry eye specific clinic opens in Erina. It is estimated that over 4million Australians suffer with dry eye disease, and this is on the rise. Optometry Australia (January 2020) reported three quarters of Australians have suffered with dry eye, yet only one third have seen an optometrist about the latest treatment options available. Chronic Dry Eye causes red itchy eyelids when the eye glands are unable to produce enough tears to lubricate the eye which can cause the sufferer significant discomfort. The new facility offers treatment via a state- of-the-art Lumenis IPL Machine. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is more commonly used for beauty treatments, such as collagen production and hair removal, although the treatment is different for dry eye. Founder and Practitioner Liz Barrett, explains why she felt the need to open such a facility here on the Coast. “Having spent 28 years in the optical industry in Ireland, England and Australia, I have noticed a shift in dry eye syndrome. It is certainly becoming more common due to a variety of contributing factors such as environment, increased screen time, diet and medications.” Liz says. “As I started to notice the number of sufferers increasing, I decided an accessible facility was urgently needed on the Central Coast.” “We will work in partnership with optometrists and ophthalmologists all over

the Coast to help the growing number of people whose lives are affected by dry eye conditions.” Liz explains. The Lumenis IPL machine is a highly effective and safe method of treatment for dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea and blepharitis. This technology and treatment is FDA approved and TGA listed for dry eye disease. IPL dry eye patients usually need four treatments, performed two to four weeks apart. Six-monthly follow-up treatments are recommended for maintenance and prevention. “The treatment is absolutely phenomenal. Patients can experience relief after just one session, but changes will be more noticeable after two to three sessions, depending on the severity of symptoms.” Liz concludes. Managing Director Taylor Bartley of Life Medical Centre - Erina, where the new facility will be located, is excited by the new addition to their centre. “Life Medical Centre is excited to welcome Liz and the Dry Eye Solutions team to our practice. Our vision was to create an evidence-based practice that is focused on patient care and health outcomes. We feel Liz and her team share those same values and we look forward to seeing this new service benefit the community.” Taylor says. Located within Life Medical Centre in Erina. Patients will require a referral from their eye care professional prior to a treatment. Phone: 4312 4273

Recovering from breast cancer? Come join us for strength, fun and exercise! Dragons Abreast Central Cotast – DACC

D ragons Abreast is the name of a group of women and men who have survived breast cancer, or supporters of the survivors, who participate in dragon boat paddling! In Peel St, Toukley we have a local Dragons Abreast group, a subgroup of Central Coast Dragon boat Club, and we train twice a week on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Many of the girls train just once a week but still enjoy the fun of dragonboating. There is an international regatta next year in New Zealand and we hope members can attend this regatta. We can join in general regattas or just come to training to keep up our fitness level, everyone's choice. We have a meeting every 2 months so we're not bogged

down in meetings! After the shock, surgery and treatment of breast cancer, dragon boating offers fun, camaraderie, support and understanding and an increase in total body strength. We have a Facebook Page under Dragons Breast Central Coast (Coastbusters) where we can keep everyone up to date with happenings. We have a mix of ages within the group and everyone is welcome!! We try to have a coffee after training and it's good to relax and chat. You can come for a tryout for up to 5 times and then join our group, we do get a little wet as it's a water sport so come with exercise /casual clothes, water type shoes and a bottle of water and be prepared to
