Planting natives is a way of honouring place — acknowledging the landscape’s history and contributing to its future. It’s gardening that feels grounded, sustainable, and quietly powerful. Whether you’re filling a courtyard or transforming a full backyard, native plants offer a beautiful, loweffort path to a healthier garden and a healthier environment. The Power of Native Plants P lanting native species in your garden is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to create a thriving, resilient outdoor space. Native plants — those naturally found in your region long before modern landscaping — are uniquely adapted to local soils, rainfall patterns, and climate. This means they settle in more easily, require less maintenance, and reward you with a garden that feels deeply connected to the land beneath your feet. One of the greatest benefits of choosing natives is their natural hardiness. Because they’ve evolved to suit local conditions, they generally need far less watering, fertilising, and fussing than exotic species. Once established, many natives can withstand drought, heat, and poor soils, making them ideal for gardeners who want beauty without constant upkeep. This resilience also means fewer chemicals, less water use, and a garden that works with nature rather than against it. Native gardens also play a vital role in supporting local wildlife. Birds, bees, butterflies, and small mammals rely on native plants for food, shelter, and nesting sites. When you plant species like grevilleas, banksias, teatrees, or lomandras, you’re creating a miniature ecosystem that invites life back into your yard. Pollinators, in particular, flourish in native gardens, helping to strengthen biodiversity in your neighbourhood and beyond. There’s also a unique aesthetic pleasure in gardening with natives. Their forms, textures, and colours reflect the natural beauty of the region — from the sculptural lines of grass trees to the soft movement of native grasses and the vibrant blooms of bottlebrushes. A native garden can be designed to feel wild and bushlike, or clean and contemporary, depending on your style.

In Peel St, Toukley we have a local Dragons Abreast group, a subgroup of Central Coast Dragon boat Club, and we train twice a week on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Autumn on the Central Coast arrives quietly, almost shyly, softening the edges of summer without ever stealing its light. The days stretch out in a gentler way—still warm enough for morning walks along the foreshore but touched with a crispness that reminds you to grab a light jumper on your way out the door. It’s a season that invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and notice the small shifts happening all around you. Across the Coast, the landscape begins its subtle transformation. Liquidambars and maples blush into deep reds and burnt oranges, adding pockets of colour to suburban streets and lakeside parks. In the hinterland, the bush takes on a richer, earthier tone, and the late-afternoon sun casts long golden beams through the gums, turning even the simplest fire trail into something cinematic. Autumn is also when the Coast feels most balanced—cooler nights, clearer skies, and that perfect middle ground between beach weather and cosy-at-home evenings. Locals linger longer at weekend markets, wander the boardwalks around Tuggerah Lakes, or take slow drives through Yarramalong Valley where the air feels a little fresher and the shadows a little longer. Wildlife becomes more active too. You’ll spot pelicans gliding low over calm waterways, kookaburras calling earlier in the evening, and the occasional wallaby grazing at the edge of a reserve. There’s a sense of calm energy in the air, as if the whole region is exhaling after summer’s intensity. More than anything, autumn on the Central Coast is a reminder of why people fall in love with this place. It’s a season of soft light, gentle routines, and everyday beauty—an invitation to pause, look around, and appreciate the Coast at its most quietly magical.

How Healthy Are Our Waterways? The 2024–25 Results
C entral Coast Council has released its latest Waterways Report Card, examining the ecological health of Tuggerah Lakes, Brisbane Water, lower Hawkesbury River, Coastal Lagoons and Lake Macquarie. This initiative is a part of Council’s comprehensive monitoring programs for Central Coast waterways. The Report Card grades water quality at 34 sites across the region and the results showed significant improvements from the previous year with 79% of sites receiving excellent or good grades, an increase from 44% last year. Of these sites, 18 sites improved (53%), 15 sites remained stable (44%) and one site declined (3%). Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said Council
rainfall, which stirred up sediments and reduced overall water quality. While this year’s report card shows improvement, it’s important Council continues to review the data against previous years to understand past and current conditions, which are also heavily impacted by rainfall and wind, to identify where to focus future management actions and help determine long-term trends in water quality and ecological health. This program aligns with the NSW Estuary Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Protocols, allowing comparison with other estuaries across the state. is committed to protecting and preserving our natural assets for the long term. “The Waterways Report Card results offer valuable insight into the condition of our waterways and show the importance of ongoing monitoring,” Mayor McKinna said. Major improvements in water quality were observed across Tuggerah Lakes (including Wallarah Creek, Wyong River, Tumbi Creek and Ourimbah Creek), Brisbane Water (including Narara and Erina Creeks), Wamberal and Avoca Lagoons and Mullet Creek in the Lower Hawkesbury. Terrigal Lagoon was the only site to experience a decline, dropping from a grade of fair to poor. This was likely due to frequent lagoon openings during periods of heavy

Fire Trail Upgrades to Safeguard 187,000 Locals C entral Coast Council has completed a program of upgrades to fire trails across the region, improving access to bushland reserves and supporting community safety.
trails have been completed in the past year. Major upgrades include Marana Fire Trail at Springfield, MacMasters Ridge Fire Trail at Bensville, Edye Fire Trail at Ourimbah, the Kangy Angy Fire Trail Complex at Kangy Angy, the Brushwood Fire Trail Complex at Kincumber and Andrew’s Point Fire Trail in the Mangrove Creek Dam catchment. The average upgrade includes: • Vegetation clearance within a 6m wide and 4m high corridor • Reshaping and importation of trail surface material • Construction of passing bays and turnaround areas • Installation of drainage features and signage • All works meet the NSW RFS Fire Trails Standards. Residents are encouraged to plan and prepare for bushfires by: • Understanding your risk • Making a bushfire emergency plan • Preparing your home • Preparing yourself and your family • Paying attention to fire danger ratings and alert levels • Downloading key emergency apps
Council manages 223 fire trails as part of its ongoing support for the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).These trails are a vital part of the Central Coast fire access network, which also includes other fire trails located on land owned by other authorities: NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, NSW Forestry and NSW Crown Lands. Upgrading and maintaining fire trails is essential for firefighting operations, hazard reduction and emergency response. Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said the annual fire trail program is a key part of preparing for bushfires. “Every minute matters when we’re trying to protect people and their homes. Improving fire trails helps emergency services get to where they need to go more quickly,” Mayor McKinna said. “More than 187,000 people on the Central Coast live near bushland so it’s important that everyone does their bit to stay prepared. “I encourage everyone to make a bushfire survival plan and ensure their property is ready during bush fire season.” Over 42,000m 2 of trail works and 18km of vegetation management across 18 fire

Microgreens Pack a Nutritional Punch M icrogreens are flavourful and can easily be incorporated into your diet. They are very nutritious and may even reduce your risk of certain diseases. They are easy to grow at home, and a cost-effective way to boost nutrient intake. Microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs harvested less than 14 days after germination. They are usually about 1-3 inches long and come in a rainbow of colours, which has made them popular in recent years as garnishes with chefs. They can be grown from many different types of seeds: Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, watercress, radish, rocket, lettuce, endive, chicory, radicchio, dill, carrot, fennel, celery, garlic, onion, leek, quinoa, swiss chard, beet, spinach, melon, cucumber and squash. Microgreens require slightly less warm and humid conditions than sprouts do, and only
2. Sprinkle the seed of your choice on top of the soil as evenly as possible. 3. Lightly mist your seeds with water, cover your container with a plastic lid. Check on your tray daily and mist water as needed to keep the seeds moist. 4. A couple of days after the seeds have germinated, you may remove the plastic lid to expose them to light. Water once a day while your microgreens grow and gain colour. After 7–10 days, your microgreens should be ready to harvest.
the leaf and stem are consumed. They can be grown year-round, both indoors or outdoors.
How to Grow Your Own If growing microgreens at home, it’s important to buy good quality seeds from a reputable company and choose growing mediums that are free of contamination with harmful bacteria. Here’s what you’ll need: Good-quality seeds, a container filled with potting soil or homemade compost. Alternatively, you can use a single-use growing mat specifically designed for growing microgreens, either sunlight or ultraviolet lighting, ideally for 12–16 hours per day. Instructions: 1. Fill your container with soil, making sure you don’t over-compress it, and water lightly. The most common growing mediums are peat, perlite and vermiculite. Single-use growing mats produced specifically for growing microgreens are considered very sanitary.

Staying Safe on a Mobility Scooter: Practical Tips for Everyday Confidence M obility scooters offer freedom, independence, and the ability to stay connected with the community — but like any vehicle, they’re safest when used with awareness and a few simple habits. Whether you’re navigating local shops, shared paths, or busy coastal walkways, these tips help keep every trip smooth and stressfree. Choose the Right Scooter for Your Needs Safety starts with a scooter that suits your environment. Smaller, lighter models are ideal for indoor use and short trips, while larger scooters offer better stability outdoors. Make sure the seat height, controls, and steering feel comfortable and easy to manage. Do a Quick PreRide Check A few seconds of preparation can prevent most issues. Check that the battery is charged, the tyres are inflated, and the controls respond smoothly. Ensure your bag, shopping, or personal items are secured so Mobility scooters can feel fast when you’re close to the ground. Slow down in crowded areas, around corners, and on uneven surfaces. Save higher speeds for open, flat paths where you have plenty of space and visibility. Be Visible to Others Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers need to see you clearly. Wear light or bright clothing, especially in early morning or late afternoon. Many scooters have lights or reflectors — keep them clean and switch them on whenever visibility drops. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings Shared paths can be unpredictable. Keep an eye out for children, dogs, uneven pavement, and sudden obstacles. Approach driveways and shop entrances cautiously and never assume others have seen you. Use Ramps and Kerbs Safely Always approach kerb ramps straight on, not at an angle. Avoid steep or damaged kerbs and never attempt to climb obstacles your scooter isn’t designed for. If a path looks unsafe, choose another route rather than risking a fall or tipover. Protect Yourself in Wet or Windy Weather Rain can make surfaces slippery, and strong winds can affect balance and steering. If you must travel, reduce your speed and allow extra stopping distance. Keep your hands dry for better control and use a waterproof cover for the scooter’s controls if you have one. Know Your Limits and Take Breaks Fatigue affects reaction time. If you feel tired, stop for a moment, stretch, and reset. Safety always comes first. nothing shifts or catches in the wheels. Use Safe Speeds for the Environment
Creating a greener, cooler Coast with street plantings C entral Coast Council is continuing its commitment to creating cooler, greener and more liveable communities through its ongoing Street Tree Planting Program, which sees around 60 - 70 trees planted across the region each year. As a one-off initiative this financial year, Council has allocated an additional $150,000 for a street tree pilot program focused on the Peninsula suburbs. Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said more trees means more shade, cleaner air and improved community spaces for people to enjoy. “These programs show our commitment to greener, more liveable neighbourhoods,” Mayor McKinna said. “We are planting more trees to help reduce heat stress, improve air quality, and make our suburbs more enjoyable places to live, work and play. “The Peninsula was chosen for the additional Street Tree Planting Pilot Program as it has been identified as a priority area under the Central Coast Greener Places Strategy. This pilot will deliver much needed shade and support Council’s liveability and sustainability goals.” Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith said we’re working together for a greener, cooler Central Coast. “Street trees are more than just beautiful – they’re essential for creating healthier, more sustainable communities,” Ms Smith said. “Residents can request trees by lodging their request online through Council’s website at centralcoast.nsw.gov.au or by contacting our Customer Service team. “Each tree request is carefully assessed against Council’s planting specifications and the Greener Places Strategy to ensure suitability and long-term success. This includes considering factors such as canopy coverage, infrastructure impacts, and environmental needs. “In addition to Council funded programs, Council has prepared and submitted an application under the Greening Our Cities Grant which, if successful, will enable even more tree planting opportunities in Woy Woy, Ettalong and Umina in future years.”

The Advantages of Rimless Toilet Technology R imless toilet technology has become increasingly popular in modern bathroom design, and for good reason. Its core advantage lies in the removal of the traditional inner rim—the hidden channel where water normally circulates during a flush. Without this concealed area, the toilet becomes significantly easier to clean and far more hygienic. One of the most notable benefits is superior hygiene. Traditional rims create dark, moist spaces where bacteria, limescale, and grime can accumulate. Rimless designs eliminate these hidden zones entirely. When flushed, water is directed around the bowl in a controlled, powerful flow that reaches all surfaces. This reduces the risk of bacterial buildup and helps maintain a cleaner, fresher toilet with less effort. Another major advantage is ease of cleaning. Because there’s no rim to scrub under, the bowl’s interior is fully visible and accessible. A simple wipe is often enough to keep the toilet spotless. This is especially appealing for people who value lowmaintenance cleaning routines or have mobility or pain challenges that make detailed scrubbing difficult. Rimless toilets also offer improved flushing performance. Many models use advanced waterdistribution systems that create a more efficient flush while using less water. This can contribute to lower water bills and a more environmentally conscious household. From a design perspective, rimless toilets tend to look sleek, modern, and minimalist, aligning well with contemporary bathroom aesthetics. Their streamlined shape often pairs with softclose seats and compact forms, making them ideal for both small bathrooms and highend renovations. Finally, rimless technology supports better longterm hygiene and durability. With fewer crevices for buildup, the toilet stays cleaner for longer, reducing wear and tear from harsh cleaning chemicals. Overall, rimless toilets combine practicality, hygiene, and modern design—making them a smart upgrade for any home.

BY GEOFF GARLINGE THE EXPERT ask And now for something completely different - A PURPOSE DRIVEN VOCATION S ince the 80's during my early years in the Natural Health field and far more so in recent times, people often ask how
Nutraceuticals, Herbals and Supplementation. Applying principles of logic, reason, science and commonsense (not at all common) I worked on restoring & enhancing my own health, while helping family, friends & others along the way. It was never my plan to go into business, and I only started to charge anyone when so many were experiencing dynamic results, and it became necessary with the exponential growth - obviously God had a far bigger & better plan. Encouraged by my beautiful wife, I took the plunge in "the recession we had to have" and just 5yrs later when selling our 1st venture, annual sales were equiv. to $5M today as doors incredibly opened into Japan, Korea and the Middle East – all from zero during the recession AUSTRALIA’S OWN Pty Ltd was born in '94, being both the original and still unique AO Co. 30+ years on I'm enriching many lives, 100% healthy with perfect diagnostics incl. a BP of 112-118/78-80 and excitedly moving into a new season of innovation. Great doors keep opening, such as our current project renovating an aged care facility that will surely be a great blessing to many of all ages. The joy to see long term Cancer patients still going well is indeed priceless, as also our healthy contingent from all walks of life who wisely boost immune, reduce inflammation and enjoy vibrant health. With the world now fearing the future, increasingly people look to be well & strong. We have tangible strategies now in place,
most bases covered re alleviating stressful health concerns, and more Natural solutions constantly being developed. Now it's the time to extend our powerful sphere of influence to embrace passionate Aussie Business Owners and entrepreneurs sharing the vision & integrity. When children are asked the age-old Q “what are you going to be when you grow up?” they nearly always reply with either exciting, glamorous, or noble vocations. However, most people never end up doing more than the mundane to survive. And while any honest work is fine, to be able to genuinely enhance the wellbeing of others on a day to-day basis is indeed amazing & surely one of the very best occupations. Crucially & in addition to the real potential to make a great living while enriching lives, a major bonus for those blessed to work in the credible space of the ever-buoyant Natural Health field is being perfectly positioned to enjoy a dynamic healthy lifestyle. After all, at the end of the day if we don't stay well ourselves, we certainly can't help anyone else. A functional sustainable lifestyle is always the win-win and same goes for business. To rest your head every night knowing you’ve contributed to others’ lives is gold. This is the definition of a true purpose driven vocation that energises and motivates to keep looking forward to rising each morning to embrace another fulfilling adventure. & why I came to be involved in my field. This is the 1st time ever that I’m now as it were sharing my story with the world to encourage others to know that life can possibly be so much better and that it’s not over until it’s over. In my case, several top Sydney specialists predicted that at 6 months and only 9Ibs (4kgs), I would not survive as an infant...into my teens...then not make 21. Now my oldest grandson is 32 and I can still easily beat the average 40yr old over 100meters! (it doesn't say a lot for them - lol) Before my journey even began and while still smoking up to 60 cigarettes per day (yes sixty, as I slowly increased from a very young age back in the day when GPs smoked in their clinics). I worked in a hospital where I learned that paradoxically sick, suffering & recovering patients are all given toxic poorquality food. This tragic cycle, driven by the love of money rather than duty of care, is still perpetuated by long term renewable contracts, with multi nationals making astronomical margins as donations flow to who knows where. Hence why the broken system can’t be fixed, with even Cancer patients being fed processed rubbish laced with synthetic harmful chemicals, laden with sugar and salt to keep costs down. So I was armed with hands-on insight prior to my Nutritional study/research outside of the mainstream, to go onto discover true

FOCUS ON CHILDREN
encourage kids to eat healthy food I f you involve kids in planning meals, grocery shopping, and preparing food, they will become invested in the process and more likely to eat. Even toddlers can help you make choices (pears or nectarines?) along the way. Simple, no-cook recipes like frozen yogurt popsicles or fruit parfaits are an excellent way to get young chefs interested in healthy cooking and eating. Teach kids where their food comes from. Rather than limiting yourself to the weekly supermarket run, take your family to a local farmer’s market (or to the farm itself) and meet the people who grow the food. Picking berries from a vine can help nurture a lifelong love of good eating and environmental stewardship. Visiting a dairy farm can teach children where their milk comes from (and why we should care about what goes in it). Planting tomatoes and melons in the garden may tempt a child to try the fruits of their labour. If you stock the kitchen exclusively with healthy treats, children will eat them. As your children grow, stock good snacks in cabinets and shelves that they can reach without your help. Some kids eat more when they’re in the car than when they’re at the table simply because active play isn’t a viable alternative when you’re strapped in. Make sure you’re prepared with nutritious snacks when you’re driving. Good choices include sliced apples, carrot sticks, whole grain crackers, light popcorn, raisins and water bottles. Like the rest of us, kids want to have it their way. But no parent wants to be a short order cook, making four different meals for four different family members. Instead offer a suitable base meal, like rice and beans, whole wheat tortillas or lean ground taco meat. Then let kids (and adults) dress it up with chopped tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, cheese, salsa, parsley, capsicum and other toppings. You might also try a pasta with a variety of healthy sauces. Kids like choices at snack time too, so consider packing an insulated lunch bag full of good snacks so they can make their own smart choices (and you can avoid hearing “I don’t want THAT!”). Remember that your child doesn’t have to just eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day he can also drink them. Smoothies with fruit like berries and bananas are a fun way to introduce new fruits. A recent study found that young children’s food tastes are significantly related to foods that their mothers liked and disliked. Letting your child see you order a fresh salad rather a burger and fries at the drive-through may encourage them to do the same. Teach healthy eating habits early, use meal and snack times as teachable moments to help even the youngest children make wise food choices.
meAtloAf • 1 teaspoon olive oil
1. Heat the olive oil in a large non stick pan over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion, chopped carrot, zucchini, dried oregano, and minced garlic; sauté 2 minutes. Allow to cool. 2.Combine onion mixture, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, minced beef and the remaining ingredients in a large bowl. 3.Spoon the meat mixture into 12 muffin cups coated with cooking spray. Top each with 2 teaspoons tomato sauce. Bake at 180° for 25 minutes or until cooked through and brown. While the meatloaf is cooking, make the mashed potatoes. Place potato in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until tender. Drain. Put potatoes into a ricer for best results. Return potato to pan. Add milk and remaining ingredients; stir with a spoon to a creamy consistency so they are stiff enough to pipe on top. Put the potatoes into a pastry bag with a wide star tip and pipe the mashed potatoes on top of the meatloaf. Sprinkle with bacon crumbles and chopped chives.
