Central Coast Council is committed to working closely with the community and police in 2020 to reduce illegal graffiti across the Central Coast. Council Director Connected Communities, Julie Vaughan said Council continues to offer free graffiti removal kits to help the community to tackle graffiti. “It’s important to remember that graffiti is an act of vandalism and should be reported directly to police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444,” Ms Vaughan said. “Removing graffiti as quickly as possible not only makes the process much easier, it reduces the likelihood that offenders will recommit. “Council is seeking to make graffiti removal as easy as possible by continuing to offer free graffiti removal kits to our community – the kits are available at all our libraries and our customer service centres”. “The kits provide the chemicals and equipment needed to remove graffiti from your own property or, with permission, the properties of friends and neighbours.“Council is responsible for the removal of graffiti on our facilities and we encourage community members to notify Council if they observe graffiti on any of our properties.” Mayor Lisa Matthews said wiping out illegal graffiti across the Central Coast was a top priority for Council. “Graffiti can affect business, tourism, neighbourhood amenity and safety which is why we need to work to- gether with police, businesses and the community to stamp it out,” Mayor Matthews said. “We all have a part to play by reporting it when we see it and if it is on your own property you can pick up a free kit and remove it straight away.” Free graffiti removal kits are available from all Central Coast libraries and Council’s Gosford and Wyong customer service centres. To receive a graffiti removal kit, residents and business owners must be aged over 18 and show proof of address.Find out more information by visiting centralcoast.nsw.gov.au/graffiti. “Keep our Coast Beautiful” Free Graffiti Removal Kits - Wiping out illegal graffiti

Daily Pelican Feeding at The Entrance The daily pelican feeding is one of the Central Coast’s most popular attractions, and this extraordinary event is entertaining and educating local residents and visitors about the area’s own pelican colony. Sit right beside dozens of pelicans and watch them feast. The attraction started over 26 years ago when the staff of a local fish & chips shop fed scraps to the birds on a daily basis. The pelicans began demanding their food from the staff, and in 1996 a feeding platform was developed with the support of major sponsors and Town Centre Management making it possible to feed the pelicans fresh fish 365 days of the year rain hail or shine. Unfortunately there are often injuries caused to the Pelicans due to rubbish such as plastic bags, fishing lines and hooks. The volunteers keep a watchful eye out during the daily feeding and capture sick pelicans to remove tangled lines and ensure the birds remain healthy. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this popular attraction free of charge, however please consider making a donation to support this ongoing service to help cover costs for fresh fish and the purchase of essential rescue equipment for injured birds. Pelican Feeding is at 3:30pm daily at The Entrance Waterfront.

Neutral Colours Show Off Furnishings and Textures

B edrooms should be for relaxing, and using neutral tones can be the perfect start for a serene design. The textural elements of a room often get over looked. A neutral backdrop creates a welcoming interior when mixed with warm textures such as rough hewn wooden elements, shiny tiles, nubby linens, and brushed velvets. Simply put, layering textiles is the key to creating a warm, well-designed space, and neutral colours allow you to create this space more easily. Neutral will always be a classic.

be the same calming bedroom retreat. This is all the more reason that you should choose a neutral backdrop for your interior. With a neutral background, your personal tastes can come to the forefront, allowing you to show-off all your cool design choices and personal style. There is a reason designers commonly choose neutral walls, especially in modern interiors, it allows the lines of high-quality furniture and the architecture of a room to come alive and be noticed.

If the mood strikes and you decide you need some vibrant hues in your life, then you simply add a few inexpensive pillows in a bold colour, or buy a beautiful bouquet of bright or native flowers or add some plant pots to add extra colour. Think of a neutral colour scheme as an investment, allowing you to avoid buyer’s remorse and ensuring an interior design that will never grow old. The bedroom in the image is a perfect example of neutral done right. Imagine this bedroomwith boldwalls....it certainlywouldn’t

Why eat Sourdough bread? S ourdough starters are referred to as “ferments” or “cultures”, which are complex microorganisms such as botulism, E. coli and moulds cannot reproduce in an environment with a pH below 4.6 This keeps sourdough bread mould free naturally (no artificial preservatives).

ecosystems composed of multiple species of yeast and lactic acid- producing bacteria whereas ordinary baker’s yeast is a single variety of manufactured yeast that can make dough rise fast without complete fermentation. Sourdough bacteria are lactic acid-producing bacteria (lactobacilli) that are also found in numerous other fermented foods (like yoghurt). These bacteria (which need a minimum of 12 hours to ferment) produce many benefits including increasing the nutritional value of a food. They also create the wonderful unique flavours and textures of real sourdough. The pH of sourdough is around 4, whereas the pH of Baker’s yeast is 5.5 to 6. Pathogenic

Naturally leavened bread is easily assimilated by the body and does not produce yeast overgrowth, so is often recommended by health care professionals. Sourdough cultures contain multiple species of yeast and lactic acid-producing bacteria, which help control yeast overgrowths. Another health benefit of sourdough bread is that it has a lower glycemic index. Sourdough bread’s glycemic index is also lower if the flour is stoneground, which means it has larger flour particles.

Psychologist Author releases book to help children deal with bullying and peer pressure

A s a psychologist Karen Young saw first-hand how young lives could be empowered with solid information. With this in mind, Karen has written her latest book, ‘But We’re Not Lions,’ to strengthen children against peer pressure, bullying, and anything else that might have them doubting that the very best thing about them, is them. This book provides a strategy for children to stay true to who they are, when they are being pulled to be something different. It opens the way to conversation about peer pressure, bullying, courage and kindness. With bullying being ever-present in our schools, cyber bullying and society in general, this book sends a powerful message to children being affected that they are not alone and provides them with ways to deal with what they are going through. Karen’s first book, ‘Hey Warrior’, is a book for children about anxiety. It was also written to provide children with valuable insights and strategies to help thrive through the

challenges that get in their way. It creatively assists children to understand and manage anxiety. Hey Warrior helps to take the fear out of anxiety and moves children towards brave behaviour. Karen has also authored a follow-up title to ‘Hey Warrior’, ‘Hey Awesome’, which tilts the focus back to children’s’ strengths. It explains that the same brain that can make us feel anxious sometimes, also comes with incredible strengths. The book has easily explained, practical strategies to help children strengthen against anxiety in the short-term and the long-term. But...Karen’s books are not just for children with anxiety or those who are bullied. They are about strengthening important life skills for all children and helping them to be resilient in all areas of their lives. But We’re Not Lions, $24.95 RRP. EMBRACE MID-CENTURY MODERN DÉCOR IN YOUR HOME I f you love mid-century modern furniture, you will love the choices available right now in most furniture stores. Mid-century modern (MCM) décor was introduced in the 1940’s and this popular style is currently back in vogue due to its sophisticated, timeless style. If you are looking to incorporate MCM furniture into your home, Melinda Stead, visual merchandising manager at Focus on Furniture, suggests looking for sleek, classic pieces with a modern design twist. “Look for natural pieces of timber furniture or muted colours in leather or upholstery with clean lines and a minimalist contemporary design,” says Melinda. “Deep blue soft furnishings look great in any space and will give your home a fresh new designer look. Other clues are armchairs or sofas with peg legs and slim timber designs.” MCM furniture is no doubt on trend and in demand. You can find beautiful classic furniture pieces these days in most modern furniture stores. With a wide range of elegant MCM furniture, Focus on Furniture can provide inspiration and advice by turning up to the store to see what’s on offer. “Looking at furniture in person can give you a greater sense of styling ideas and motivation. You can see how different pieces work together to create the look you’re aiming for and it can be so satisfying when you find furniture pieces that blend well together,” says Melinda. The Upside of Technology By Guy Thornycroft

N ot all technology translates to better products for customers. Often it is used by manufacturers to use less material and save on production costs and at times this means lower quality. An exception to this trend is in the flooring world. A challenge with solid timber is its inherent instability resulting in the need to season it on site for two weeks (time consuming), before nailing and gluing it down (expensive), planing, sanding (dust), sealing and varnishing (toxins). Technology has continued to improve Engineered timber flooring resulting in a stable floor that is timber all the way through, albeit different species. This created stability means the floor can be factory finished with

scratch’ surface, laminate stands up well to sand and we all love the beach! In addition to the authenticity, laminates are now being produced with waterproof properties so some of the new ones can even be steam cleaned or laid in wet areas. If you have been looking at flooring you will have heard of the new Hybrids. The draw back in traditional vinyl is any abnormality in the subfloor shows up on the surface of the vinyl sheet or planks. To overcome this, Hybrids have been developed. Essentially still a vinyl floor, but with a hard core and built in underlay. ProFlooring at 258 West St, Umina is open to offer you advice and help to make your job easier.

7-8 layers of a ceramic varnish and is thus more consistent and hard wearing. The dress layer provides nearly as much chosen timber as a solid board would, up to the locking mechanismwhich is as far back as you can sand a solid timber board anyway. In effect this saves 65% of a solid timber board being thrown away once it is sanded back to the tongue and groove. This is far better use of natural resources while not compromising the look, feel or performance of your floor. The next major winner in the technology upgrade is in the authenticity of laminate. The texture and look of the new laminates make them very hard to differentiate from the real thing. Laminate is particularly well suited to the Central Coast. Because of its ‘hard to

THE EXPERT ask

By Geoff Garlinge

Having seen 1st hand the devastating effects of diabetes as I’ve travelled to many destinations educating both the poorest and richest people on Natural Health in our global village... it’s no wonder there are constantly so many enquiries from those looking to take back control of their lives. Hopefully many will be encouraged to understand there is genuine hope for a breakthrough to far better days ahead. Type2 DIABETES - Natural Answers to the Modern day Epidemic Enjoying life is all about balance, especially when it’s about your health. The 21st century promised to deliver better quality of life for all - in reality only a relatively small percentage actually enjoys vibrant & sustainable health in the developed world. Despite the many technological advancements & medical breakthroughs to date, optimal health & well- being is for most sadly not attainable. Prevention is always better than cure as the old saying goes, and so we need to ask ourselves the question... Why is it so? Type 2 Diabetes, now a common disease of epidemic proportions, graphically illustrates the modern paradoxical dilemma of self-inflicted demise in general health - this scenario basically resulting from nutritional ignorance & gross over-indulgence. The fact is, though we have access to more information than ever before, most people still don’t know or care enough to take control of their own health in order to break the vicious cycle that binds so many. Without a natural strategy to maintain & enhance general well-being, a pharmaceutical alternative will eventually be implemented - whether voluntarily or not. This in effect simply masks the real issues, leading to more band-aid drugs & corresponding negative side-effects. Rather than eating correctly, exercising moderately & working to find a natural balance, the majority of the world relies on the false security provided by drug companies & the lies spun by makers of processed & fake foods – some specifically targeting diabetics! Following the deceptive techniques & guidance of the clever marketers of sugar & fat-laden sweets, drinks & junk food, this imbalance leads to type2 diabetes - when the body cannot make or properly use insulin.

focus on integrative Herbal Research, Dr Hu is more than qualified & indeed well able to deliver the Natural results required in the ongoing global war against diabetes. Glucopia is undoubtedly the best Natural formula I have seen to nourish the pancreas, as well as to regulate and combat type2 diabetes. By implementing a nutritious low GI diet in conjunction with regular exercise & correct supplementation (see following list), diabetics can actually turn their condition around to begin to finally enjoy excellent quality of life. Depending on severity, this may be achieved over an extended period. Even in extreme cases where intense counselling may also be required, it is nevertheless still possible via both dedication & perseverance. Bee Pollen is another crucial component of the Natural strategy to fight against diabetes, being an excellent energy booster to restore & maintain overall balance in the body. Diabetics may enjoy Australian (never imported) Bee Pollen on a regular basis, though need to moderate/abstain from even low GI honey (depending on severity of the condition). In summary, those already suffering with or wishing to prevent the onset of type2 should adhere to the following on an ongoing basis: • Eat a highly nutritious low GI diet (ALL REAL FOODS) comprising fresh fruit (incl. low-acid pineapple) & veg, fish, whole grains, legumes, NO added sugar Organic Yoghurt, moderate amount of lean meat (NO processed/organ meat), Clean Nuts including Almonds, Brazil, Walnuts & seeds (especially Sunflower Kernels, Pepitas & Black Tahini) as well as Organic Rolled Oats. • Chew all foods well & eat slowly to maximise sublingual absorption of nutrients and optimise digestion. • Avoid margarine/butter – rather use Fijian Coconut Oil liberally (Extra Virgin Raw Organic) for all cooking & as a spread (+avocado), Organic Flaxseed Oil/Olive on Salads + fruit. Alkoxyglycerols (SLO), ALA, Pure Ceylon Cinnamon, Maqui, Salmon Oil & Olive Leaf Extract+. • Enjoy Bio-fermented Coconut Concentrated+ in Filtered Water • Use XYLITOL (Birch)/Stevia as natural sweetening agents • Gradually increase moderate exercise (especially stair- walking) to reduce blood sugar & nasty LDL cholesterol. • Abstain from smoking & alcohol. • Always get a minimum 7-8 hours quality sleep. • Supplement daily with Aust Bee Pollen, Brewer’s Yeast, Glucopia™,

This in turn causes high blood glucose, or sugar levels, in the blood. So often the case, the simple truth is the most profound & it’s no surprise healthy eating actually does help to reduce blood sugar & is crucial in managing diabetes. Controlling sugar can definitely prevent ensuing complications. The body is well equipped to facilitate the delicate balance required to regulate blood sugar & keep us on an even keel. However, once this balance is lost via poor lifestyle choices such as dietary intake & lack of regular exercise, the resulting highs & lows experienced by type2 diabetics are enough to ruin even the most adamant optimist’s day. Add to this a host of risk factors including high blood pressure & cholesterol. These alone increase the risk for both heart disease & stroke and In line with diabetes cause major ongoing trouble to at worst spell total disaster. More than 65% of diabetics die from heart disease or stroke. Many diabetics suffer heart attacks earlier in life which often result in premature death. These risks along with kidney disease, nerve damage, circulatory problems, impairment of sight & even blindness, can be substantially reduced or even completely averted via managing diabetes naturally. In many cases, this roller-coaster existence leads to depression. No amount of positive thinking will help those trapped in this position to rally – it’s all down to getting the right advice & taking common sense steps to ensure survival for a better quality of life. Of course, the majority of diabetics opt for a pharmaceutical strategy which inevitably leads to additional complications & ensuing side-effects – tragically ending in a nursing home situation where one’s most precious independence is lost. The good news for those who will decide to take charge of their own health is that there are simple Natural strategies that work to prevent, manage, & even reverse type2 diabetes. My colleague Dr GR Hu & his research team have developed a scientifically formulated all Natural medication for regulating normal blood sugar levels known as GlucoPia. The active components of GlucoPia have proven to be highly effective via extensive clinical & pharmacological studies plus longstanding traditional usage to maintain normal glucose levels & general well-being. One of these ingredients (a Herbal compound named Berberine) stimulates glucose metabolism & regulation through a cellular mechanism known as glycolysis. Berberine has the ability to reduce body weight due to metabolic syndrome. After over 40 years+ clinical & research experience, including over 25 years to date at Sydney University with a particular

Catherine Hill Bay

Blackbutt Reserve

Somersby Falls . It’s a great place to picnic, with free barbecues and picnic tables and plenty of space to set up your own rug and chairs. Somersby Falls picnic area is the perfect place to escape from everyday life. Enjoy your meal amidst lush rainforest that feels a million miles away but in reality is so close to home. After lunch experience the walking track. It’s a 500m return walk through rainforest that takes in views of the top and bottom waterfalls. The walk is steep and slippery in places, so keep an eye on the kids as they walk along the track. Open 9am - 8pm daylight savings time or 5pm at all other times. Catherine Hill Bay is a secluded and sleepy old mining village in the hinterland behind the Central Coast within the City of Lake Macquarie, where coal was discovered and mined by the New Wallsend Company who built the jetty in 1873. Access is via a sealed beach road off the Sydney - Newcastle Freeway and the Pacific Highway. Despite the beauty of the bay and it’s attractive situation in a valley surrounded by high hills and bushland, the presence of the rusty iron and lifeless machinery inevitably gives the Bay a very different feel to other busy tourism-based towns of the Central Coast. Blackbutt Reserve offers an experience with our Australian wildlife in a guided tour through the exhibits. Get up close to see koalas, wombats, emus, spotted-tail quolls, snakes and a variety of kangaroos and wallabies in this 182-hectare nature reserve. Learn as you see and touch animals during this fun-filled, one hour journey which includes encounters with several reptiles. Tour information - Please contact our friendly office staff, phone the office Monday to Friday between 8am and 3pm or email enquiry. P: 4904 3344 14 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Autumn 2020
