HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST BED FOR YOUR GROWING CHILD W hen it comes time for choosing a new bed for your child, many parents make the mistake of buying for the “now” and not the future. Selecting the right bed and mattress for your child is key to ensuring they get the best sleep and hours required for brain function and growth. Ideas from interior stylist Melissa Gullifer at Focus on Furniture can help you select the best bed: 1. Keep it simple. Over-complicated styling is unnecessary as children grow up so quickly and their tastes change as they transition through their childhood years. Don’t go out and buy your three-year-old daughter an expensive princess bed because in a few years time she will want something else. Be practical and think about a timeless bed option in a simple colour, or a timber bed frame, or upholstered bed like the Tiffany single bed from only $249, which will give you the flexibility to add a variety of affordable quilt covers to update as your child grows into a new phase. 2. Space. Think about how much space you have in your child’s bedroom and consider their current height and growth in the future. Is there enough room for a king single, double, or queen bed or only a single? Also consider beds with built-in storage if you are limited with space. The Tex single bed has nifty built in draws and shelves, perfect for storing books and toys. Can two bedsides fit this space, or one? Will they need a desk or reading nook? Their bedroom should be designed around the idea of a personal little sanctuary; somewhere they can sleep, rest and play. 3 Test and rest. Help your child create their dream bedroom and give them the full bed testing experience by shopping with them in store. They will love it. Test out suitable beds and mattresses, and sit with them on the bed. Is it comfortable? Will it stand the test of time for your child? Think about how many years you want your child to keep this bed. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a good quality mattress. Focus on Furniture has huge range of options starting from $79 to $1099 for a single mattress and the choice of Australian made, as well as up to 15 years guarantee for peace of mind. 4. Budget. Have your budget set and do your research. Good quality beds do not need to break the bank. Decide on the important features your child needs, for example, single or double bed, two bedside tables or just one and don’t forget to add in a quality mattress. Stick to your budget and enjoy the process! And don’t forget to ask the store manager about delivery options.

Reducing stress

S tress is a common response to tough events or situations. Some stress is normal and stress itself is not anxiety or depression. However, severe and ongoing stress may be a risk factor if it persists. You may be at risk, for the majority of the last two weeks, you found it hard to relax, felt stressed or overwhelmed, and/or felt panicky or anxious. If this is the case, managing your stress levels should become a priority. Ways to reduce stress include: 1. Postpone major life changes - Making major changes in your life can be stressful at any time. If you’re already feeling stressed or anxious, it might be best to avoid or delay significant events, such as moving house or changing jobs. 2. Resolve personal conflicts - Stress in personal relationships can be a major contributor to anxiety and depression. Learning how to communicate honestly with people and address problems or conflicts as they arise is important. A counsellor or psychologist can help you find ways to work through your problems. 3. Do the things you enjoy - Take your mind off your worries by making sure you allow plenty of time for enjoyable activities, such

find meditation or yoga a good way to unwind. Potentional stress triggers include Family or relationship breakdowns, Redundancy or financial problems, Health concerns for yourself or a loved one, Caring for a newborn baby, Traumatic events, including physical or emotional abuse. We all have good days and bad days. Then there are those days when something isn’t quite right, you’ve got something on your mind, or things just seemtoomuch.Whatever it may be, sharing the load with someone else can really help. So no matter who you are, or how you’re feeling, you can talk it through with us – we’ll point you in the right direction so you can seek further support. Last year more than 150,000 people in Australia contacted us about their concerns – both big and small – and you can too. All calls and chats are one-on-one with a trained mental health professional, and completely confidential. Although we may ask for your first name and some general details, you can let us know if you’d like to remain anonymous.

as relaxing by the waterside, listening to music, reading, gardening, or spending time with family and friends. Try doing something creative or learning a new craft – a project, such as making a gift for a friend, can provide a goal to work towards and give you a great sense of achievement. 4. Control your work - Work plays a big role in our lives, but it’s important to have a sustainable work/life balance. If work is increasing your stress levels, avoid long hours and additional responsibilities, and learn to say ‘no’ more often. 5. Exercise regularly - Physical exercise can help relieve tension and relax your mind. Team sports can be a great way to socialise and connect with others while exercising. Try to do some physical exercise every day, even if it’s just going for a walk. 6. Get support - Simply talking to someone such as a friend, doctor or counsellor can help relieve stress. Don’t be afraid to ask for support at home, at work or in your other activities. 7. Remember to relax - Incorporating breathing and muscle relaxation exercises into your daily routine may be helpful. They can also be used as short-term coping strategies. Some people

More Than Jewellery, A Beautiful Ethos Seaspray Valuations & Fine Jewellery in Umina Beach is proudly owned and operated by husband and wife team, David and Julie Mitcheson, whose ethos has always been to provide extraordinary jewellery with integrity. At Seaspray, we take great care to ensure that all of our pieces are produced with a focus on sustainability and ethical practise. Our ethical standards and environmental concerns ensure we source our diamonds and gemstones from reputable gemstone and diamond dealers, and follow the Kimberley Process in sourcing conflict free diamonds. All scrap metal left over from creating handmade jewellery is collected for recycling … the gold scrap is ultimately sent off to be melted down, refined and re-used again and again. We also buy old gold from customers and recycle it back to fine gold, to be made into beautiful new jewellery or for repairs, without the heavy footprint that the mining of new gold brings. Seaspray also specialises in re-purposing old jewellery. Do you own, or have been given, jewellery that you never wear and just sits at the bottom of a drawer? We encourage our customers to come in and have their existing, old or unwanted jewellery transformed into something new and beautiful to wear, whilst still retaining precious memories. Utilising their old gold and gems, and in consultation with Julie in our interactive Design Studio, customers can take an active part in their new jewellery design with a 3D visual of what their new piece will look like before it is handmade or custom made by our jewellers in our onsite workshop. David also believes strongly in mentoring the next generation of jewellers … one of our apprentices has just recently completed and is now a fully qualified jeweller, and our other apprentice is currently in her third year. Due to their exceptional work they are both multi-award winners and we are very proud of their achievements. Seaspray Jewellery, going above and beyond for you and the environment. Trends and fashions come and go like tides. So what are the current trends I am noticing? By Guy Thornycroft S trandwoven bamboo is still a popular floor, but the number of enquiries is falling suggesting that while its low knot and grain feature remains a great canvas floor on which to display your furniture, it may be seeing a decline in popularity. Engineered oak floors have been growing in demand. Their strong wood grain and rustic

less in flooring. The most recent generation of laminate brings you an authenticity in both look and feel that has never been seen before. With it you get a waterproof flooring with a very long guarantee. Laminate is perfect for the Central Coast because it is the most resistant option to scratching and thus suits active family lives by resisting sand that inevitably makes its way into the house. Whether you are looking for beach cottage rustic (eg QuickStep #Classic Oak Natural) or sophisticated sea view penthouse style (eg QuickStep Colonial Plus #Spotted Gum), there is a laminate to meet your requirements and budget, ensuring laminates will continue to be popular. features make them a visual feast and they are produced in a wide range of tones and colours. This makes them easy to match to your furniture. The other advantage of oak for Central Coast homes is their brushed matt varnish finish which hides minor scratches and scuffs well. This is an important consideration if the beach features in your lifestyle! An exciting variation on Oak planks is a Chevron or Herringbone pattern. Several suppliers have made a move into this space suggesting a growing trend. The effect is eye catching and makes a bold statement. These floors add a definite WOW factor to top end homes and apartments. Most oak floor boards are long and wide, which is great for big open spaces, but the Herringbone planks are much shorter and narrower so work well in rooms that might not suit long, wide boards. Using tongs dip your date into the chocolate to cover. 4. Turn out onto a sheet of baking paper and sprinkle desiccated coconut or your choice of topping over the top. Place in the fridge to set for a few hours. Enjoy... E atingmedjool dates satisfies your sweet tooth while providing energy, vitamins and minerals needed to maintain overall health. Medjool dates have been cultivated for thousands of years for their sweet, rich flavour. Dried fruit, such as dates, contain more calories in a smaller volume than fresh fruit because a large amount of water has been removed. Eating just two dates, which average about 1 to 2 inches long, gives you 133 calories. Be mindful of your portion size because it’s easy to overeat these sweet fruits, which may lead to weight gain over time. However, they are a fat-free food, making them a good alternative to high-fat desserts when tryi g to limit your daily fat intake.

Dates contain small amounts of almost every essential mineral. The ones to note are potassium, manganese and copper. Your body relies on potassium to regulate fluid balance, heartbeat, blood pressure and nerve impulses. Copper is used for the synthesis of connective tissues and helps maintain proper brain and red blood cell function. Manganese plays a part in forming bones, blood clotting factors and sex hormones, regulating energy metabolism, calcium absorption and blood sugar levels and maintaining brain and nerve function. The vitamins present at the highest percentage of your daily needs are vitamin B-6, niacin and pantothenic acid. Eating two dates provides you with 6 percent of the daily value for B-6 and 4 percent of the daily values for pantothenic acid and niacin. These nutrients play a role in red blood cell production, energy metabolism, growth and development and skin health, the nervous system and the digestive system. Eating dates as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet helps you meet your daily requirements for these vitamins.

The injections can also be used for lip enhancement to add volume and improve lip d finition in younger lips or for lip rejuvenation by treating vertical lines around the lips, giving it more youthful appearance. One injection can also be used to reduce excessive underarm sweating. All these procedures are carried out on a walk in walk out basis and can benefit both men and women. All such medical treatments have benefits as well as potential side effects and the doctors at Central Coast Cosmetic and Vein Centre can help you decide which tr atment is right for you. The Practice at Erina has been operating on the Central Coast for over 20 years. All procedures are carried out by trained doctors and you can be confident in their advice and in your ultimate decision. Choose skin products wisely - Try to avoid harsh products that further dehydrate your skin such as those that are soap and alcohol- based. Use a gentle cleanser and then apply a good-quality moisturiser (better oil-based than water-based) that will create a protective layer on the skin so that it retains more moisture. Eat for healthy skin - Choose foods that are rich in antioxidants or omega fatty acids such as fruit, avocado and oily fish. These types of food all help to keep skin healthy by prolonging retention of moisture and nutrients. They also assist your skin with excreting waste products more easily. Beat dry winter skin Hydrate! - Drink lots of water! During winter, we often reduce our water intake, but hydration is vital to the health of your skin. Keep a water bottle with you at all times to remind you to keep your intake up. Further hydrate your skin by moisturising at least a few times a day and after washing, especially if you have been exposed to severe weather conditions!

Central Coast Cosmetic and Vein Centre at Erina provides a range of medical and cosmetic treatments for skin, vein and other medical complaints that can change the way people look and the way they live their lives. Doctors at Central Coast Cosmetic and Vein Centre can help diagnose and treat common but troublesome problems such as varicose and spider veins. Unsightly and painful leg veins can be treated by sclerotherapy, a method of injecting a solution into the veins to seal and eliminate them. Thinking about cosmetic rejuvenation? Orthotic Shoes provide great support

O rthotic shoes are not only designed to cater to your arches, they cushion your heels and can help realign your foot. Without this support and proper alignment, painful and frustrating issues such as flat foot and plantar fasciitis can occur. The average person walks 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day. If you are wearing poor-fitting shoes, imagine the damage you are doing to your feet each day. These shoes give your toes the room needed to move around comfortably, and they often come in sizes and widths not available in regular shoes. They prevent your feet from rubbing against the inside of the shoes, and don’t have heels that will push your feet forward into unnatural and uncomfortable positions. Wearing orthotic shoes can encourage blood flow and give great support, and are recommended by podiatrists and other medical professionals, as they can also help to relieve and prevent knee and back problems due to pronation or over-pronation of the feet, sports - related pain, problems linked to diabetes and problems associated with arthritis. Instep Footwear at the Imperial Centre in Gosford have an extensive range of Ziera shoes (formerly known as Kumfs) to suit all lifestyles. Music Lowers Stress and Improves Health I f you are ever in need of an emotional boost, it only takes 15minutes of listening to your favourite tunes, as music has a direct effect on our hormones. It can even be considered a natural antidepressant. This is because certain tunes cause the release of serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters) in the brain that lead to increased feelings of happiness and well-being. It also releases norepinephrine, which is a hormone that invokes feelings of euphoria, which gives the effect of a natural high. This is because your  brain releases dopamine , a neurotransmitter that leads to increased feelings of happiness, excitement, and joy, when you listen to music you like. Listening to music you enjoy decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress. This is an important finding since stress causes 60% of all our illnesses and disease. One study showed that if people actively participated in making music by playing various percussion instruments and singing, their immune system was boosted even more than if they passively listened. To stay calm and healthy during a stressful day, turn on the radio. Be sure to sing along and tap your feet to the beat to get the maximum healing benefit.

Why Are Fruits and Vegetables So Many Different Colours? E ach colour in fruits and vegetables is caused by specific phytonutrients, which are natural chemicals that help protect plants from germs, bugs, the sun’s harmful rays, and other threats and each colour indicates an abundance of specific nutrients. If you’ve ever felt confused about how much fruit and veg you need to eat, you’re not alone. The latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that while nearly one third of Australians eat the recommended number of serves of fruit each day, less than one person out of 25 eat the recommended number of serves of vegetables. But what is the recommended number of fruit and veggies to eat? It seems many people aren’t sure, and think they should eat five serves of fruit and vegetables each day. But the actual recommendation is to eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit every day. So nutritionists have come up with a simple idea to help you make sure people eat enough fruit and vegetables each day: ‘eat a rainbow’. Originally developed as a way to get fussy kids eating more fruit and vegetables but now being used by people of all ages, the ‘eat a rainbow’ idea groups fruit and vegetables into one of six broad colour groups – all you have to do is make sure you eat at least one or two serves from each colour group each day to meet your daily fruit and veg needs. We all know fruits and vegetables are full of fibre and all sorts of essential vitamins and minerals. Each colour has its own unique health benefits. So ‘eating a rainbow’ each day means more than just getting enough fruit and veg – it’s about eating a wide variety of foods so your body gets all the essential nutrients it needs.

THE EXPERT

By Geoff Garlinge

Q: Inyouropinion, what’stheabsolutebest and most friendly 100% natural protein powder?Withsomanyonofferallsaying theyaresuperior,Ijustcan’tgetmyheadaroundit. I doknowthatwithworkingphysicallyhardallweek, plusmyexerciseprogramthat includesswimming, someweight trainingandPilates, I reallydoneed to be putting more protein in. I must tell you I have a very sensitive gut, so it definitely needs to be easy on the digestion. My preference is organic and as oursonispresentlyvegan, ifpossibleitwillbegreat if itfitsthebill inrelationtothatsidetoo. Anytipsfor creatingapowerful blendwith itwill begreat. A: So many “Natural” options (some real, some fake) means it certainly can be bewildering to the average consumer to say the least. While it’s true that certain natural substancesdoworkbetterforsomeindividualsand not for others, without anydoubt SproutedOrganic BrownRiceProteinismypickofthecrop. Delivering substantiallymorebio-availableprotein thanHemp (another great natural source), thispowerful gear is actuallyanantioxidant, stripskilosofunwantedfat, is extremely gut-friendly and even improves liver & heart function. Of course it’s totally vegan too. If all this wasn’t enough, studies have shown that it also reduces the glycemic response, stabilising glucose levels while you safely build more lean muscle.AddCoconutProbioticConcentrate(bonus electrolytes offer a huge bonus to boost brain function & cellular integrity) to Almond milk (Nutty Bruce) and blend with prebiotic greenish banana, Organic Maqui Berry Activate (Not to be confused with weak Acai′) + Organic Maca (beware as most is substandard/counterfeit material as is Turmeric Powder). Non-vegan family members can also enjoy some minimum 20+ WA Medicinal Honey (more economical than Manuka with the great benefits) & a good dose of must-have Bee Pollen... and you’ll all be flying in no time. Get into a daily rhythmandstick to it toseedynamic results. Q: HELP! Every year as winter starts to set in, it’s the same old same old in my house. And I’m finally nowwell and truly over it. It usually begins when I’m too busy to even notice the early signs that should alert me to take better care. Next follows the odd cold that creeps upasitslowlybutsurelyworsens, oftenwithasore throat. I’membarrassed to admit I fall for the same vicious cycle every year. I sometimes also end up

withachest infection that drainsallmyenergyand I worry I’ll have scarred lungs fromall the coughing. Last year I even got the full blown flu and when feeling like I was at death’s door, I swore I wouldn’t let it happen again in 2018. My kids (five, eight, twelve and fourteen) usually go down first. Pretty soon all the grownups including my Mum and Dad, follow suit. It’s not long until the whole clan is sniffling, sneezing and coughing as we take turns tomoan in voices that sound like we all swallowed razor blades for breakfast. The kids are far more resilient and do bounce back, but still always end up missing heaps of school due to illness. Of course the older ones are typically happy about that, though at the same time they often complain the loudest. Taking time off work for me means no pay, so it’sverystressful time financially too. So for the first time ever, I’ve been seriously thinking that I’vereallymadeahugemistakebysimplyfocussing oneverythingelseexceptstayingwell.Inowrealise that trying to save money and not working on our healthhas totallybackfired inmoreways thanone. The lost productivity is outrageous, not tomention plenty of time wasted sitting in doctors’ waiting rooms with other sick people, breathing in who knows what other bugs?! Then there’s the hard earned cash spent on drugs (legal of course) that we hate to take, and for the most part probably don’t really hasten our recovery anyway. I at least understandantibioticsstrip thegoodaswell as the bad bacteria and that’s why Probiotics are very in these days. I heard they’re somehow good for the brain too. Sorry and please forgiveme rambling on, but I’m very determined and ready to look at what needs to be done now for us to stay strong, keep working and hopefully prevent any serious health problems before they happen. My parents have worked hard all their lives too and really should be enjoying life now, not being sick and laid up a few times a year. My plan is to lead by example to encouragethemhealthwiseinsteadofgoingdown themedication track to the nursing home likemost seniorsdo. Any advice will be hugely appreciated and will be put into practice at the very least by me. I’m excited tostartmakingchangessoon. A: No need to apologise and thanks for elaborately sharing your family’s health problems. Gaining the knowledge to escape the cycle of seasonal sickness will

also help many others. Typical sudden changes in the weather always provoke an array of negative health issues in many households such as yours. The negative repercussions of winter’s falling temperatures and chilly winds are equalled only by the onset of spring, whenHayfever &Sinus sufferers’ symptoms & attacks spiral. The good news however isneither scenarioneeds toeventuate if preventative measures are simply put into place before the weathershifts.Thoughthankfully inyourcasethere’s been no sign of cancer or any degenerative disease, applying wisdom to “build the bombshelter before the bomb drops” is the best way to short circuit pain & suffering way above typical winter ills. Prevention is always better than cure, though it’s still highly beneficial to implement positive changes even after winter hits. An injection of natural logic will stop draining illnesses from continually ruining your days, give you all increased physical & mental energy, a brighter outlook, enhanced immunity, plusa far greater overall level of health & wellbeing than most people think is even actually possible.
