Ṡ AKPE TI LOUNGE CLOSED Due to state public health guidelines regarding COVID-19, the Ṡ akpe ti Lounge is currently closed. At this time, we are not offering any regular weekly or monthly programs. We miss our older active adults and hope to restart our programs as soon as it is safe to do so.

HISTORY OF SHAKOPEE SERIES Presented David R. Schleper, Shakopee Heritage Society. WEIRD ANDWONDERFUL IN EARLY SHAKOPEE The barbershop that collapsed, the rats that invaded downtown, and the Japanese American young adults from the Gila River War Relocation project who arrived at the Shakopee NYA Center, along with visitors who came to Shakopee, including the presidents, the famous flyer Charles Lindbergh, and the father of RedWing Pottery, and more will be discussed. CHURCHES, MOSQUES AND HOLY PLACES IN EARLY SHAKOPEE St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, which was built but never used, the German St. Mark’s Catholic Church and the Church of Immaculate Conception (later called St. Mary’s) for the Irish in Shakopee, the First Presbyterian Church (now the Igelsia del Dios Vivo, Columna y Adoyo de la Verdad, La Luz Del Mundo), St. John’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Russian Evangelical Baptist Church, among others, will also be presented. INSTIGATE, INFLAME AND IGNITE! FIRES IN EARLY SHAKOPEE The fires helped change the landscape in early Shakopee. Stories about the the Great Fire of 1879, the fire at Ferdman Store in 1934, the fires at the St. Paul House in 1965, the Riviera Supper Club fire on 1952, the fire at Page and Hill in 1957, and the deadly Chevrolet garage fire in 1959, along with others, will be discussed. But many years ago, schools happened in houses, in churches, and in log cabins. Over time, public schools started popping up around the area of Shakopee.
