BUKET UZUNER The Adventures of Misfit Defne Kaman: Earth (novel excerpt) Buket Uzuner has published numerous novels, short story collections and travelogues, translated into ten languages. She won The Yunus Nadi Literature Prize for her novel The Sound of Fishsteps ; her novel Mediterranean Waltz was named “Best Novel of 1998” by Istanbul University. Ms. Uzunerwas selected among the “75 Most Influential Women” of the Republic of Turkey, on the occasion of Turkey’s 75th anniversary. She is trained as a biologist and environmental scientist, and works as an environmental and animal activist. She has studied and worked at universities in Turkey, Norway, the US and Finland. She currently resides in Istanbul. Erkut Tokman (born in Istanbul, 1971) is a poet, actor, visual artist, editor and translator. He has lived in London, Bucharest, Milan, İzmirand Istanbul, where he studied poetry, modern dance and acting. He is president of the Intercultural Poetry and Translation Academy of Turkey (IPTAT) member of Turkish and Italian PEN, and working in WiPC (Writers in Prison Committee). He has been an editor of Yasakmeyve literary review and Levure littéraire . He has published five volumes of his poetry, and many articles, translationsand short stories, and hiswork has been translated into ten languages. He has served on the advisory board of the Roboski human rights museum. Among his awards are the Messina Citta di Arta international poetry prize, and the Salvatore Quasimodo Jaci poetry award in Italy. TE 16-7
