When the children have long gone

When the children have long gone and the sea’s so calm there’s not a wave on show, I unlock the door to the garden and go along the tree-murmuring path following the stars’ glow. I walk through thicket and straight to sea. I sit and I watch. And I think. And I know by dawn amber will glitter the beach and be piled on the sand our children abandoned long ago.
