Why Piql?
Amount of data continues to exponentially grow and doubles every two years. Around 20% of all that information has immeasurable financial, cultural or legal value, and if such information is misused, manipulated or lost, the consequences are alarming. Piql’s mission is to safeguard this irreplaceable information and give governments, organizations, businesses and individuals peace of mind.
DIGITAL DARK AGE Vice president of Google Vint Cerf, also known as the “father of the internet”, fears that future generations will have little or no record of the 21st Century as we enter what he describes as a “Digital Dark Age”. Documents, presentations, images and even films will be lost due to all hardware and software eventually becoming obsolete. Our digital memory risks being lost in in an accelerating digital revo- lution, says Cerf. So far the only way to avoid this problem, has been an endless chain of migration. This means that stored data needs to be up- dated to a new file-format and moved to a new storage medium every 3-5 years. This causes some major challenges: • Loss of data (Bit rot, data corruption, data loss and security issues) • High operational costs (App. EUR 2 000,- pr. terabyte pr. year) Migrating data represents 60% of large enterprise IT projects. By not migrating the data will be lost or impossible to retrieve due to obsolescence of storage medium, reading device and/or file formats.
“ Even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is. Vint Cerf, “Father of the internet”

MIGRATION BASED VS. MIGRATION FREE STORAGE
CYBER CRIME Along with the growth of data and cloud services comes cyber crime. As securityexpert at Check Point Software Technologies, Christian Sandberg, so cleverly puts it: “It is easier to get hold of digital weapons than physical weapons. Crime is shifting over to the digital world. You hardly hear of bank robberies anymore.” CYBER-CRIME STATISTICS • 400% increase in loss of business data records the past three years. • 88% of all organisations suffered a data loss incident last year. • 94% of all organisations used at least one high-risk application last year. • 275 new, unknown malware was discovered every minute throughout 2015. • One in five employees would be the cause of a company network breach through either malware or malicous wi-fi.
We secure future access to valuable data, by offering a unique combination of features:
MIGRATION-FREE Avoid the risk of corruption and data loss, save time and get a more predictable long-term cost. FLEXIBLE Data can be stored in digital formats or as human readable texts or images. PERMANENT piqlFilm & piqlBox are tested to safeguard data for 500 years. SECURE Data is safeguarded from cyberattacks, logical threats, EMP and physical threats.
SEARCHABLE Your metadata is fully searchable. You’ll find what you need, whenever you need it.

UNALTERABLE By using a a true WORM 1 medium, it’s impossi- ble to modify or delete your valuable data.
SOLVING THE PROBLEM According to Vint Cerf, the best solution to the problems de- scribed is: “To take a snapshot of the content, the application and the operating system together with a description of the ma- chine that it runs on, and preserve that for long periods of time. And that digital snapshot will recreate the past in the future”.
FUTURE-PROOF Data retrieval is independent of specific technologies or vendors.

The technology behind
THE RESULT OF YEARS OF RESEARCH € 27 million invested and 8 years of R&D, resulted in a unique and holistic solution that disrupts how valuable data is stored today, and guarantees access in the future. Together with a range of research institutes, technology partners, film producers and suppliers, Piql has deployed the technology in the market and is providing services to clients globally.
piqlFilm
• PiqlFilm is a 35mm, ultra-high resolution nano-film optimized and designed for preservation of digital data. • Norner Research AS and the Image Permanence Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology, US, have performed tests on the piqlFilm to verify its longevity and the read-back of data. • The piqlFilm is manufactured by Kodak (US), Harman (UK) and Filmotec (Germany).
DIGITAL DATA AS HIGH-DENSITY QR-CODES
We have used the latest nano technologies to convert photo- sensitive film into a digital preservation medium for the future. The result is an ultra-high resolution film where the data is writ- ten as very high-density QR-codes. Digital frames can be combined with visual previews for an ad- ditional security level. Human readable instructions on how to recover the data with the technology available in the future, are written at the beginning and end of every reel of piqlFilm. This is made possible by our turnkey technology solution, the Piql System, together with our specially developed piqlFilm and piqlBox.
piqlBox
• The film is protected in the unique piqlBox which enables safe storage of the data. • The piqlBox has undergone a wide range of tests by Norner Research AS to ensure its longevity and compatibility with the piqlFilm. • Plasto (Norway) is the manufacturer of the piqlBox.
A TURNKEY PIQL SYSTEM
piqlWriter writes data onto the storage medium; the piqlFilm
piqlVault is a robotic vault for safe, space efficient and automated storage of piqlBoxes
piqlReader reads back data from the piqlFilm
piqlProcessor develops the piqlFilm and makes the data readable and permanent

Piql Services Where do we come from and where are we going?
FROM NORWAY TO HOLLYWOOD Piql AS was founded in Drammen, Norway, in 2002, then with the name Cinevation. The ambition was to bridge the gap between the analogue and digital world in the motion picture industry. The result was Cinevator, a digital film re- corder that printed movies to 35mm film 100 times fast- er than its competitors. This was the start of an industrial adventure; Cinevator became the world’s leading film printer.
ARCTIC WORLD ARCHIVE® As part of offering the ultimate security for the worlds most valuable data. Piql has opened an offline data vault on the arctic island of Svalbard. Deep inside arctic mountains with permafrost and ideal climatic conditions, on the Svalbard archipelago de- clared demilitarized by 42 nations, the safest place on the planet for a “digital embassy”. The data is kept offline and access is pro- vided on demand when needed. Piql andStoreNorskeSpitsbergenKulkompani, a stateownedNor- wegianminingcompanybasedonSvalbard, represent various areas of expertise thus enabling the transformation of what initially was an idea and a vision, into rock-solid reality. Piql preserves valuable digital data for eternity by deploying a disruptive technology for ultra-secure storage and long-term digital preservation in the most geo-political stable location in the world. The Arctic World Archive® caters for any country, authority, organization, company or person in need of ultra-secure storage of their valuable information with guaranteed access in the future. Norway, Brazil and Mexico were the first nations to deposit some of their most important data in Mine no. 3, a state owned mine that housed the Global Sead Vault when it first opened in 1984.
Some users of Cinevator:
Some years back the market started to decline as cinemas were digitized, and we needed to change our focus accordingly. Piql is now focusing on a new business area; securing long-term future access to valuable, digital data.

Public Administration & Archives Ex: The National Archive of Mexico decided to put pieces of the most valuable information they have on piqlFilm. The holdings included digital versions of of the Mexican constitution. Culture & Memory Institutions Ex: National Museum of Norway gained interest in Piql’s migra- tion-free solution as they were looking to develop a complete new workflow of access and preservation of their digital assets. As a first initial pilot, they are looking to preserve some of their most valuable data on Piqlfilm. Media & Publishing Ex: Czech Radio, the public radio broadcaster of the Czech Re- public, has a large audio archive representing global and Czech historical events. They chose audio files (in wave format) from its most important collections to preserve on piqlFilm. Industry & Manufacturing Ex: Navantia, a large shipbuilding yard in Spain that assembles ships with a lifetime of up to 60 years. The company is required to keep all documentation and information about all parts of the ship for more than the expected lifetime of the vessels. They have started the digitization process to convert x-rays onto piql- Film. Defence, Justice & Legal Ex: Tata Consultancy Services preserved 50 million historical legal documents on piqlFilm on behalf of the High Court of Madya Pradesh in India.
Bank & Insurance Many banks still have a vast ammount of paper records they are obliged to archive both for legal and business reasons. Ex. one of Piql’s clients used to spend EUR 250 000 monthly on physically storing their paper archive at a remote location. By writing the documents on piqlFilm, the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and security has improved immensely. “ Piql Services represent an intriguing solution for secure data storage and long-term preservation and we find the solution very relevant to us Ing.
