o This can be phased in, within the constraints of the current MOI, and will ultimately necessitate MOI amendment Should involve a traceable transaction, e.g. signing a pledge, obtaining a membership card (“card- carrying WESSA members”) o Define a wider range of ‘supporterships’, voluntary donation categories and sponsorships for supporters who can afford it. “The Board may fix the subscriptions and other charges and…may differentiate among the Members ” (see extract from MOI below)

o Use of technology, e.g. digital membership cards, smartphone apps o Brand, identity and reputation remain the key to success o WESSA can immediately mobilize younger supporters (in the 18-34 age group) by incorporating the Supporters category and considering their representation on the Board • Launch youth branches in higher education institutions, youth movements and schools and educator’s branches o virtual branches centered around common themes or interests, in addition to geographically defined branches • Enhance confidence and trust by communicating consistently, accessibly and frequently, addressing issues of concern to the broader South African population and youth [bearing in mind that WESSA’s communication nevertheless received a 62% satisfaction rating] • Share reliable information about global environmental issues, e.g. climate change, biodiversity loss and the link between human well-being and the environment with members and supporters at all levels. Respondents identified these needs in online surveys and dialogues • Provide clear direction to volunteers; outline WESSA’s required contributions, priority programmes, possible working groups and workstreams they can sign up for • Harness and channel expertise amongst competent volunteers to contribute to WESSA’s strategies and action plans and participate in working groups and work streams o 74% of the members in the online survey were willing and able to engage in knowledge sharing activities, 61% said they would participate in hands on activities, 57% said they would willingly be involved in fundraising and donating activities and 36% wished to be engaged in a form of activism; 33% wanted to contribute by writing for WESSA o Prestige and recognition of belonging to WESSA is an important motivator or incentive o Crucial to do this in a cost-effective way by minimizing management effort and raising additional funds through high net worth members’ contributions
