1 LASCELLS HOOKES LAW This apparatus from Lascells provides a robust and convenient method of verifying Hooke’s law. Unlike many other versions this apparatus is designed to allow students to investigate single springs and spring combinations in both series and parallel. The apparatus gives sensible single spring readings using only 100g. The apparatus is supplied with a robust hanger and pointer, a clear scale and 3 springs. 3 FLUID PRESSURE APPARATUS Also known as the ‘Spouting Cylinder’. For demonstrating the increase in pressure of a liquid with an increase in depth of the liquid column. Made from painted metal sheet, with three spouts of the same size but at different heights down one side. The lower the spout, the higher the pressure will be when the cylinder is full of water, so the greater the distance the water will spurt out. It is capable of absorbing many times its own weight in water but, unlike other hydrogels, it expands rapidly when it gets wet to form a snow-like mass. Injected into a stream of high pressure water, it emerges as the high pressure snow seen on TV and film sets. It is non-toxic and re-useable. As a rough guide to quantify what this snow will make; one handful is enough to make 1 bucket full of snow. supplied in a pot of 100g. Potential applications are many and varied e.g. temperature indication/warnings, body jewellery, displays. Try attaching a resistance wire (nichrome) to the back of the sheet, then pass a small current through the wire to produce dramatic colour change patterns. Supplied as a 150 x 150 mm sheet.
