Team roping header ready to rope in Las Vegas IN HIS WORDS TATE KIRCHENSCHLAGER

I t’s exciting, real exciting. It finally feels like it’s going to pay off, all the long miles and all the money put into it. I don’t know if it’s sunk in fully, but it feels good. I think my mom wants to throw an NFR party in a few weeks. I have to go down to Texas for a few rodeos, so I don’t know when we’re going to do it, but I know my mom wants to throw a little get-together for everybody. Tyler and I have rodeoed a little bit together. A couple years ago we roped together in the winter, and the last four years or so, we’ve been best friends, practicing together in Stephenville. I bet we’ve run thousands of practice steers together. I think it’s a huge key knowing each other. Tyler can rope them so fast and gets them on a short rope. Hopefully I don’t have to throw very fast and will make sure to get out of the barrier and turn them, and he’ll make up the time. It’s nice knowing you’ve got somebody who can make up the time. It takes a lot of pressure off you. The win at San Antonio was nice. It went from hoping we could win enough to us knowing we could go all year. Everybody sets out to go all year and make the Finals. But it’s always in the back of your head that I hope we win enough so we can go next week and the week after that. But when you get a big lick like that (San Antonio), you’re hooked, you can go all year. It was a relief financially. It was enough that I knew I could go until Pendleton (Ore.).

Everybody knows how much it costs out here. It (winning $25,000) takes the pressure off having to win every time you nod your head. But at the same time, you don’t want to slow up any because those top six or seven headers every year, they win $35,000 one day, they’re liable to win $25,000 the next. Your Clay Smiths, Kaleb Driggers, they never let up. I’d say the only difference this season is I probably had the two best horses I’ve ever had all my life. They’re both sound and worked good from the first of the year all the way to the end of the year. And I had a bunch of support – from sponsors to family to my fiancée (Terra Micek). She put in as much work as I did. She deserves as much credit as I do. Terra and I are getting married June 6 next year. Between our horses, and I ride customer horses, I think we had 15 head of horses at all times when we weren’t rodeoing. She’d help saddle them, ride them, clean stalls. She was as much a part of it as I was. If you’ve got someone on your team all the time it helps so much. If it hadn’t been for her, I’d have had to hire somebody to help with that. But then I wouldn’t have had the emotional support out there on the road. It shows. Guys like Ryan Motes, he has a great wife. She supports him. Coleman Proctor is another. It seems like all those guys like that have someone in their lives, and I think that makes a huge difference.

Tate Kirchen- schlager will go to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Colorado team roping header who turns 27 Oct. 11, earned $75,738 to unofficially finish 12th in the regular-season PRCA | RAM World Standings. Among his wins was the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February, when he hauled in $25,750 roping with Ross Ashford. Kirchenschlager will rope with Tyler Worley at the Wrangler NFR.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

What was this season like for you? Logan: This season was up and down. I broke my right ankle in late April in Red Bluff, Calif., and I took two weeks off. When I came back, I wasn’t riding very good until it healed up around June, and then I had a really good Fourth of July run (winning $3,944 in St. Paul, Ore., and $2,716 in Greeley, Colo.). Was your rookie season in the PRCA everything you thought it would be? Logan: I’m happy with how I did, but my goal was to win rookie of the year and make the Canadian Finals Rodeo. I did make the CFR (in Red Deer, Alberta, Oct. 29-Nov. 3) for the first time, which is very exciting. What was the coolest PRCA rodeo you competed at this season? Logan: I would say Pendleton (Round-Up in Oregon). I always knew they competed on the grass there, but the people, the crowd, it’s just a great place to rodeo. What was it like growing up having Rod Hay as your father? Logan: It was pretty cool. Dawson and I always got to go rodeoing with him all over the place when we were younger. It was cool doing that, and when we started riding broncs it was really good because you couldn’t have a better coach than him. He also raises bucking horses, so we got on all his bucking horses and it worked out well. What was your timeline to compete for PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year? Logan Hay, a 22-year-old saddle bronc rider from Wildwood, Alberta, had a solid rookie season in 2019. Hay earned $31,667, which placed him third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings behind Stetson Wright and Tegan Smith. His father, Rod, was a saddle bronc rider and qualified 20 times for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (1989-90, 1992-2008 and 2010). His younger brother, Dawson, 21, also a saddle bronc rider, will make his debut at the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. After battling through some injuries in 2019, Logan, 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds, has expectations of making the Wrangler NFR in 2020.

LOGAN HAY

Logan: Dawson and I started at the same time, but I broke my left arm like four times. I took the summer off and let my arm heal and I went guiding in the mountains. I was guiding (hunts for) moose, stone sheep and caribou in northern British Columbia. That was the summer of 2015. I had surgery on my left arm in the spring of 2015, and it is better now, and I went into my rookie year in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and PRCA in 2019. What was it like guiding for Kawdy Outfitters in 2015? Logan: That was really cool. If I wasn’t riding broncs, I would be guiding hunts in the mountains, for sure. You’re up there for like three months and there’s no power, no cellphones. You’re literally living in the wild.

What was the first job you did to receive a paycheck? Logan: I helped my grandpa build a house and I did carpentry. Did you play hockey growing up? Logan: I played from the age of 5 to 16. I was a right winger. I was pretty good, but I was a little too small to go too far. Who is your favorite hockey player? Logan: Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers center). I live about an hour from Edmonton, and my team is the Oilers. I’ve been to quite a few of their games. What’s your best skill besides saddle bronc riding? Logan: I would have to say snow skiing. What is your favorite restaurant? Logan: I’m a big fan of Mexican food, and I like a restaurant called Azteca. I eat there when I’m in Oregon and Idaho. When I’m there I get the steak enchiladas and water to drink. Where’s your favorite place to get a cup of coffee? Logan: Tim Hortons, for sure.

What is your go-to TV show to watch? Logan: I’ve been binge watching The Blacklist . My favorite character is Red. He’s a mad dog. What is your favorite movie?

Logan: Step Brothers . That is really funny. What type of music do you listen to? Logan: I listen to a lot of Drake. I like his stuff.

Sundell was aboard The Cervi Brothers’ Living The High Life when the horse reared up in the chute and smashed Sundell in the chest. The impact lacerated Sundell’s liver, according to Rick Foster of the Justin Sportsmedicine team. Sundell was taken to the hospital and had surgery that evening. On Sept. 23, a spokesman for the Justin Sportsmedicine team told ProRodeo Sports News that Sundell had stayed at the Cow Camp in Rancho Mission Viejo. Sundell was walking and trying to regain weight after his lengthy stay in the hospital. Sundell finished the PRCA regular season 17th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $83,329.

Cowboy Journal, ‘NFR Extra’ earn PRCA nods The Cowboy Journal , which was launched in 2017 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by founders Shane Hanchey, Logan Ward, Matt Cohen and Megan Scales, has been selected for the 2019 PRCA Journalism Award presented by Boot Barn. The website spent its first year bringing first-person stories directly from contestants – cowboys and cowgirls, bullfighters, stock contractors and others inside the arena. Las Vegas Events launched “NFR Extra,” March 20. The bi-monthly podcast focuses on the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and features personal conversations with icons that embody rodeo and Western lifestyle. “NFR Extra” has been chosen for the 2019 PRCA Multimedia Broadcast Award presented by Boot Barn. The podcast is hosted by Bo Gardner and Nevada Colwell. The PRCA media award winners will be honored at the PRCA Awards Banquet at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Dec. 4.

PRCA begins partnership with Bloomer Trailer

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association announced Sept. 24 its national partnership with Bloomer Trailer. The official partnership raises Bloomer Trailer’s efforts to be the trailer of choice for the champions and fans of rodeo. By becoming the Official Trailer of the PRCA, Bloomer Trailer continues to demonstrate it is the world’s leading manufacturer of custom and state-of-the-art horse trailers. All PRCA members will have access to an exclusive rebate program with their local dealer. “Partnering with the PRCA gives us the exciting opportunity to bring the Bloomer standard to as many of the world’s best cowboys

as possible,” said Randy Bloomer, owner. “We are eager to continue to grow with ProRodeo fans and rodeos, and we look forward to expanding our connection to the sport of rodeo throughout the year.” The Bloomer Trailer partnership will provide substantial support to the PRCA and members, as well as an additional program for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund (JCCF). “The PRCA is incredibly proud to partner with Bloomer Trailer,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “Bloomer Trailer’s member discount program will be substantial and meets the continued goal of the PRCA giving value to our members, committees and cowboys.”

Daggett County Centennial plays key role in community

BY THE NUMBERS 5 The number of rookies who qualified for the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. Those rookies are bull riders Stetson Wright, Daylon Swearingen and Trey Kimzey, and tie-down Rookie steer roper Cole Patterson qualified for the 2019 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Nov. 22-23. No rookies qualified for the Wrangler NFR or NFSR in 2018. $108K The amount of money, $108,160, earned by bull rider Trey Kimzey during the PRCA regular season, which ended Sept. 30. That total put Kimzey in the No. 15 spot in the unofficial PRCA | RAM World Standings. Kimzey’s total was the most money earned by the No. 15-qualifying bull rider for the Wrangler NFR. The previous record for money needed to qualify for the Finals in bull riding was set last season by Trevor Kastner at $94,396. ropers Haven Meged and Shad Mayfield.

As a proud sponsor of the PRCA, AGCO® Corporation, through its brands Hesston® and Massey Ferguson, recognize that PRCA-sanctioned rodeos contribute significant support for local, regional and national charities and organizations. These charitable efforts by rodeo committees are making a positive impact on members of the various communities. Hesston and Massey Ferguson, through its Sowing Good Deeds initiative, want to raise awareness of these local efforts and reward one PRCA committee each year whose impact goes above and beyond. One rodeo committee will be chosen to win a Massey Ferguson® tractor valued at $35,000 for the good work they do.

One applicant for the Sowing Good Deeds initiative is the Daggett County Centennial PRCA Rodeo in Manila, Utah, which was Aug. 30-31. The rodeo committee is all volunteer for this county-sponsored event. It celebrates the county’s centennial as Utah’s youngest and least populated county with a rich heritage of agriculture, oil and gas development and tourism/outdoor recreation. The rodeo arena was not in the best shape, but volunteers from the high school, the community, the chamber of commerce and the county worked to upgrade and improve the facility. Because Manila is so small, it takes a tremendous amount of work to make the rodeo happen, and to do that the committee brought in more than 100 sponsors, most of which are from outside the community. The sponsors helped

upgrade the arena and bring other resources. The entrepreneurial spirit was exemplified by taking a risk to bring a high-cost rodeo to the community and working hard to make it successful in a short period of time. The undertaking of putting on a PRCA rodeo helped bring the community together and brought a sense of pride. The biggest challenge the rodeo faces involves the small size of the community. The county population is fewer than 1,000 and the closest big city is Salt Lake City, 180 miles away. The committee went outside its county boundaries and recruited volunteers, sponsors and resources from as far away as Salt Lake. Through the hard work of the Daggett County Centennial PRCA Rodeo committee the rodeo succeeded, which created more optimism.

COWBOY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD RODEO

Lamb sets pace for next season with win Rolling now

TOP SCORES

ALL-AROUND COWBOY Clay Smith, $3,121, team roping and steer roping BAREBACK RIDING

BY MATT NABER W ith a master’s degree in hand and a blossoming music career, Alberta bareback rider Kody Lamb could be doing anything with his life, but he’s chosen to make a go at professional rodeo with the PRCA and in Canada. “I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire,” Lamb laughed. Lamb’s first album, “Faster Feet and Brighter Lights,” was released in September 2017 and can be found on Spotify, Apple Music and most places music is available. “It’s gone over well,” said Lamb, 25. “Overall, I have close to half a million streams on Apple Music and Spotify. We kept it really in-house, literally. A buddy and I recorded it in the basement. I don’t have any marketing or do any touring. I’ve been focusing on rodeoing, and I’m really happy with it.” Lamb was in the winner’s circle for two iconic Stephenville, Texas, rodeos when each celebrated their 50th competition. In 2015, Lamb won the Tarleton Stampede in college, and in 2019 he won the 50th Annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo. “I’ve ridden in that building a lot of times, and after a while you have to win something, I guess,” Lamb laughed. Lamb earned a bachelor’s in psychology in 2016 and a master’s in science and applied psychology in 2018 from Tarleton State University. Lamb won Stephenville’s ProRodeo on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Lady’s Man with an 86.5-point ride for $2,166. Before 2019, Lamb’s best season was in 2016 when he won $31,020. This year, he more than doubled that amount. “Rodeo’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done,” Lamb said. “I always have to keep improving myself to be successful. I’ve rodeoed since I was 9 or 10 years old, and I always craved more and wanted to climb the levels, and I haven’t been satisfied with anything I’ve done and always wanted more. And that’s what keeps me coming back.” Lamb ended the 2019 season unofficially in 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $68,345 and ranked 10th in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association with $16,601, qualifying him for the Canadian Finals Rodeo. “I had a lot of hurdles to jump over to compete in the pro level, so to finish where I did, I can’t be too down,” Lamb said. “I had a great year, all things considered.” The last couple of years were cut short for Lamb due to injuries, including tearing his biceps in his left (riding) arm in Livingston, Mont., last season. “Just staying healthy was a big accomplishment for me,” Lamb said. “Being here and doing it again was probably the biggest prize of all.”

PRCA ProRodeo photo by James Phifer Steer wrestler Tyler Pearson competes during the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Pearson is headed back to his fourth Wrangler NFR in 2019, thanks to wins like he had at the Omaha (Neb.) River City Rodeo where he earned a $3,059 check.

IN BRIEF HESSMAN WINS BULL RIDING

MATHEWS TOPS IN TIE-DOWN Tie-down roper Cooper Mathews, 21, captured the title in Omaha with a 7.7-sec- ond run. The victory earned the Cleburne, Texas, cowboy $3,643. Mathews edged Lane Livingston by one-tenth of a sec- ond for the title. The 2019 season was Mathews’ rookie year.

Tyler Hessman had an 86-point ride on The Cervi Brothers’ Jack Hammer to claim the victory and earn $3,837. Hess- man, 26, is from Beaver, Okla. He joined the PRCA in De- cember 2015. BY TRACY RENCK S teer wrestler Tyler Pearson wasn’t sitting on the bubble during the last week of the PRCA regular season. But the 2017 PRCA world champion didn’t take his foot off the gas pedal, either. The Mississippi native won the Omaha (Neb.) River City Rodeo for the first time with a 3.5-second run. “That was cool,” said Pearson, 34. “I went up there and I didn’t know the steers that well, and (Sean) Mulligan let me ride his nice horse, Miss Kitty. I have ridden that horse five times and won four checks on her. I got a great start, the steer was good and I was able to make a good run.” Pearson earned $3,059. He unofficially finished ninth in the regular season 2019 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $83,109. Pearson has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo four times – 2013 and 2017-19. The 2019 Wrangler NFR is in Las Vegas at theThomas &Mack Center, Dec. 5-14. “This year I want to be in shape (for the Wrangler NFR),” Pearson said. “I’m dang sure going to practice a lot, but I want to stay in the gym and just get fit. I want to go at every round at the NFR like it is my last and go for it all. I’m pumped to go back. I was pumped to make it once, and now to make it four times is truly a blessing.” At the upcoming Wrangler NFR, Pearson will be riding Scooter, the 2017 and 2018 steer wrestling PRCA | AQHAHorse of the Year. Scooter is owned by Pearson and fellow steer wrestler Kyle Irwin, who unofficially finished eighth in the regular-season standings. “Scooter has been on injured reserve a lit bit, but Dr. Marty Tanner said everything will be fine,” Pearson said. “I love being on him (Scooter). We sent him home a little early to get him some rest. We did good without him, but I sure love riding him.”

$3.9K Amount of money, $3,955, bareback rider Jake Brown earned by winning the Omaha (Neb.) River City Rodeo. It was part of a strong final weekend for Brown, as he earned a combined $7,335 by also winning the Ameri- can Royal Pro Rodeo in Kansas City, Mo., and finish- ing second at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo. Brown is headed to his fifth straight Wrangler NFR.

11 Number of times saddle bronc rider Brody Cress earned at least $3,468 at a rodeo this season. That was the amount he earned at Omaha for his winning, 86.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Forked Up. Cress qualified for the Wrangler NFR for the third year in a row.
