T his winter has been really good. I’ve gone to fewer rodeos this winter than I ever have, but I’ve been having quite a bit of success. I’ve been capitalizing on the good horses that I’ve been drawing. I’ve got some saddle horses down here this year and I prioritized a little bit. I’ve been riding them a little bit more and worked on the mental game a lot so I don’t have to rodeo quite as much to have the same amount of success. I’ve always tried to work on my mental approach, but I feel like I’ve matured in my bronc riding lately. With all the new added money, all the bigger rodeos that have joined this year and all the bronc matches it’s just exciting to be able to have a chance to compete for that much money. Making the Shoot Out at The American was pretty incredible. It all happened so fast. You ride Saturday, then you show up Sunday and ride, and get back on for the short round. I don’t think my adrenaline wore off. Among the success of the winter, probablyThe American is what stands out. It was cool that I got on (Frontier Rodeo’s) Medicine Woman in the short Jake Watson’s one trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo came in 2016. After the winter he’s had, the saddle bronc rider from Hudson’s Hope, British Columbia, is looking like he might be headed to his second Wrangler NFR. As of March 19, Watson, who turns 26 in April, was in sixth place in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $44,982. Watson won $25,000 by finishing second in the Shoot Out at The American in Arlington, Texas, won $8,000 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and won the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, Miss.

round. I’d been dreaming of that horse since I was 12 years old. She was a handful, made me work for it. She is dang sure the epitome of a bucking horse, she’s big and strong and gets after it. It was the second time I made the short round at The American. I rode there the year after I made the Finals for the first time. I got bucked off that year. But this year I had some momentum going into it. I had been having some luck in the early winter rodeos. I was just excited to be there. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but hopefully I’ll make it a few more times. This is probably the most fun winter I’ve had so far. We’ve been doing whatever we want and the money has been rolling in. It’s been really good. It feels pretty good to be able to go to the ones you really want to go to and not have to bust your butt all winter and just be able to enjoy it, kind of slow down and make sure you remember all the good parts. I’m traveling with Jake Finlay, Layton Green and Ricky Warren. We get along good and have fun. Nobody has a negative attitude, we’re all upbeat. A bad day of rodeo is still better than most other days. After making the Finals in 2016, I haven’t had a bad year between those (2017 and 2018), but I had a little bit of injury one year and came back too early and wasn’t up to the standards I hold myself up to as a bronc rider. I’m happy with what I’ve been doing this winter, I’m going to keep trying to roll with it the whole time. Like I’ve said before, with rodeo, you’ve got to do it because you love it, you don’t just do it for the money. It lights a fire in you when you’re watching your buddies on TV in Vegas. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be there (in Vegas) in December.

SHADMAYFIELD, an 18-year-old from Clovis, N.M., is in the midst of a successful rookie season. As of March 19, he was second in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in tie-down roping with $14,005. Mayfield, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, is following in the footsteps of his father, Sylvester, who qualified twice for the National Finals Rodeo in 1985 and 1987.

Is rodeo something you’ve done ever since you were a little kid? Shad: Yes, it was. My dad got me going and helped me every step along the way. I want to follow in his footsteps. He’s my idol. Did you always want to be a tie-down roper? Shad: Yes. That’s what my dad did, so that’s what I was around my whole life. I enjoy the athletic part and the mindset. You have to have a good mental game in (tie-down roping) and have to be athletic to do it. It’s probably the toughest event rodeo has going right now. What’s it like living and growing up in Clovis, N.M.? Shad: It’s really a team roping town. There are a lot of team ropers who live here. My dad was born and raised in Clovis, and I was born and raised there as well. It’s where I call home, and I travel all over the place to go to rodeos. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Shad: Yes. I have a sister, Shelby, and she’s 19. She is a barrel racer, and she’s on the rodeo team at Texas Tech University. From your perspective, how has your rookie year gone so far?

Shad: It has been good. I’m sitting right around the Top 25 in the world standings and I got into San Antonio and I did good there. The first rodeo I went to – the Denver Qualifier – I filled my permit, so I just decided to buy my card. I’m going to go all year and hopefully get a chance to make the National Finals Rodeo. The coolest part of being a PRCA cowboy is getting to travel and seeing different places. What would be going through your mind if you were able to compete at the 2019 Wrangler NFR?

Shad: I’ve been there and watched the NFR – I was there last year watching it. If I made it, I think I would be nervous, and it would be humbling. It would certainly mean a lot for me to be there because it is something I’ve always worked for.

What did it feel like to win $10,000 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February? Shad: That was a big rodeo. I was just glad to be a part of it and rope against those guys and former world champions. I really liked the atmosphere there, and it was pretty cool to get to rope at the home of the San Antonio Spurs. When 2013 Tie-down Roping World Champion Shane Hanchey won the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Feb. 23, he gave you high praise. What does that mean to you? Shad: That feels good to have Shane say good things about me. I’ve looked up to all those guys my whole life, and to be able to rope against them and follow in their footsteps is something to be proud of. What horse are you riding?

Shad: I’m riding a horse I own. His name is Cracker. He’s 14. I’ve had him about six months, and I started out the year on him. He’s working great, and he’s a big part of my success. His best quality is probably the fact that he works the same every time, and I trust him. Who are your favorite sports teams? Shad: The Denver Broncos and the Golden State Warriors. When I was a little kid, I had a friend who liked the Broncos and he got me started liking the Broncos. I’ve liked them ever since. Golden State I like because they are a winning a team. What is your favorite restaurant? Shad: Raising Cane’s (Chicken Fingers). I get the chicken strips and sweet tea to drink. What is your favorite dessert? Shad: Pumpkin pie. I try to eat it year-round, but I do eat a lot of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. What is your go-to movie? Shad: Let me think about this. I think it would probably be 8 Seconds . I’ve seen that movie too many times to count. What was your favorite cartoon to watch growing up? Shad: Scooby-Doo! I was always interested in watching that cartoon.

What was the best birthday gift you received? Shad: I got a four-wheeler for my birthday this year.

The estimated payout for the 2019 RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., which ran March 21-24 at the Silver Spurs Arena.

Tough Enough To Wear Pink donates more than $34,000 More than $34,000 was distrib- uted between two local cancer support organizations from the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up’s 2018 Tough Enough To Wear Pink (TETWP) campaign during a presenta- tion at the Pendleton Round-Up & Happy Canyon Hall of Fame, March 14. The Round-Up Association’s TETWP allocated $34,257 in 2018 funds between the St. Anthony Hospital Cancer Care Clinic and the Kickin’ Cancer New Beginnings program. This is the second-most amount the campaign has raised (the most was in 2015, with more than $39,000 raised). Contributions came from sponsorships, TETWP merchandise sales, donations from spectators and volunteers, custom pink TETWP Justin Boots and custom Montana Silversmiths jewelry raffle ticket sales, pink Wrangler shirt sales, collector’s pin sales, tips donated by Let ’er Buck Room volunteers on TETWP day during Round-Up, and the Justin Boots Slack After Party. “We’re so appreciative of the community’s gen- erosity in this campaign,” said Casey White-Zollman, co-chair of the Round-Up’s TETWP campaign. “Seeing everyone come together in pink during Round-Up to show their support for cancer survivors and patients is so powerful.”

This high-profile event not only raises breast cancer awareness to the thousands of visitors who come to the Round-Up each year, but 100 percent of the proceeds stay within the Pendleton community. The two organiza- tions benefiting from the TETWP campaign help local patients from time of diagnosis through recovery. The Kick’n Cancer program provides free massage, personal training and Pilates classes for recovering patients, while the St. Anthony Cancer Care Clinic provides breast prosthetics, mastectomy bras, post-op camisoles, lymphedema sleeves, pads and gloves, mastectomy swimwear, wigs, financial help, and mileage reimbursement for cancer patients. “TETWP wouldn’t be possible without the com- mitment from our sponsors, the Pendleton Round-Up, community members and our amazing volunteers,” said Jill Gregg, co-chair of the Round-Up’s TETWP campaign. “We are very thankful for their continued support to make this event a success.” The Pendleton Round-Up Association’s TETWP campaign will celebrate its 14th year in 2019. TOPS AT HOUSTON — Feb. 25-March 16 BAREBACK RIDING BY MATT NABER T ie-down roper Michael Otero has been on the cusp of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo many times since joining the PRCA in 2003, and the 2019 season already is shaping up to be the year to achieve his lifelong goal, especially after winning RodeoHouston. “I feel like I’ve been living my life right, and things are easier because of

that,” Otero said. “I feel like I’m in God’s favor in helping me draw the right calves and I’m older and more experienced in roping, so that helps a bunch.” He ranked as high as 19th in the world standings in 2015 and has won big rodeos such as Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2012 and the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo in 2015. Now, he’s on a roll, winning $54,250 at RodeoHouston in March and $13,263 at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo in February.
