MELA Meeting Minutes 2003 - 2017

iv. Chris Jenkins suggested that it would be a good idea to have a meeting with the bookstore managers and business managers state-wide to discuss some of these options. v. Chris also asked if there was a way for us to encourage our instructors to not cut out students during the first week of class because of textbook issues. Jennifer Leimer stated that we have encouraged our instructors to work with those students without textbooks. We prefer that our instructors give the students at least two weeks before dropping them. Jackie Bailey-Hall mentioned that we had approved that the MSVCC Status Change email notification be updated for the student to contact the instructor rather than the DLC. At this time this request has not been changed. Jennifer Leimer asked that Jackie develop a screen shot request and submit to the Enrollment Tool committee. Chris Jenkins was discussing the discrepancy in the no-show reports submitted by the schools. Some schools have zero no-shows and others have several. Schools handle no-shows in different ways. ECCC places never attended in the ET with a date before the first day of classes. MGCCC does the same for no-shows but will remove or add a student during the two-day add/drop period. After the add/drop period MGCCC withdraws the student in the ET. Several schools are just removing the student all together after the add/drop period. Jennifer stated that we may need to do a best practice on this topic so that the numbers are accurately represented. After add/drop schools should not add/remove a student without contacting the DLC so that they can make the instructors aware of the change. ii. Holly Melvin asked what schools were doing for No-shows? It appears that all schools handle them differently. No-shows are typically processed based on the individual college policy. Audra Leverton mentioned that HINDS implemented an orientation through their course templates module. Once the students complete the survey at the end of the module they are considered as active and are no longer eligible for a no- show. iii. Jennifer Leimer asked if those schools would be willing to share examples of their survey’s or orientation modules to the association. She requested that those schools bring their information, if they are willing to share, to the October DLC meeting. This would allow schools that are currently not using an orientation module to develop something prior to the spring semester. Jackie has had a problem with students entering the self-registration page and attempting to register for courses for the fall semester. Christian said that he would discuss this with Ive, but thought that the students may have saved the URL on their computers. The students do not get added to the course Blackboard or the Student Information System because they are unverified. The problem is that the student will still appear on the MSVCC roster.
