Part 2 – Explainingwords In the introduction to ‘classroom language’ it says that children learnnewwords from context and visualisation . An example of using context is the explanation of the word ‘chimney’: ‘There is smoke coming out of the chimney.’ Here theword ‘smoke’ contributes to under standing theword ‘chimney’. An exampleof visualisation , explaining thephrase ‘Open your books’, is pointing at your ownbook andopening it yourself. However, youcanalsoexplain themeaningof aparticularword verbally , byusing other, simplerwords (paraphrasing). Assignment 6 Select twomorephrases from thisunit andput them in awider context. Assignment 7 Write fourmorephrases you coulduse at thebeginningor endof the lesson. Assignment 8* Fill in the appropriatephrase from the list above. ‘Nowwork inpairs andpractise thedialogue inyour textbook.Oneplays the shopkeeper and theother the customer.The things you canbuy areon the board.Of course youmay alsousewords of your own.Go ahead! Example1: Leisureactivities (From Real English )

Yes, that sounds a littledifficult, doesn’t it?Well, ‘leisure’ is the same as ‘free time’ and ‘activities’ are things that youdo. So, leisure activities are things that youdowhen youdon’t have togo to school or towork. Leisureactivities canbe ‘reading’, or ‘skateboarding in thepark’ or ‘going for anice longwalk with your dog’. They are a littlebit likehobbies. I like leisure activities a lot!
