Devon Forster, a sophomore outside hitter from Boul– der, Colorado is part of San Diego 's outstanding sophomore class. Forster completed her rookie season by being named the WCC Freshman of the Year. Kri sten Hurst, from Bakers– field, California, also starred during her first season in San Diego. Hurst served up a conference best 39 aces, helping the Toreros compile a 22-9 overall record. "We expect both Devon and Kristen to play even larger roles as sophomores," added Petrie. "Our young play-" ers will be such an essential part of this team and we are ex– cited to see them continue to develop and raise the level of our program." complement a strong junior class that provides Petrie with depth and experience at the net with middl e blockers Li sa Gordon and Bridget Merritt expected to play major roles up front. After USD's tournament and heavy preseason sched– ule, the Toreros will match up with #24 Santa Clara, beg inning con– ference play on the road in early October. The fin al two regular-sea– son games, home matches with #8 Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount should prove to have a huge bearing on USD 's post-season fate. The Toreros enter the 2002 season with hopes of qualifying for their sixth NCAA Tournament in seven seasons.
