Cable fault locator Reels of rejected multi-conductor and shielded cable sitting on the produc- tion floor are an expensive problem. Defects in unknown locations must be pinpointed in order to salvage the remaining good product. The new Clinton Model FL-20A cable fault locator finds faults accurately and quickly, without destruction to the cable. Its design incorporates a Kelvin-type Wheatstone bridge, which measures capacitance and resistance, and a 20KV DC high voltage power supply. This powerful combination gives an operator the ability to locate not just opens and metallic shorts, but also any high voltage short between conductors or between conductor and shield. When a cable shield is involved, accurate fault location can be obtained without raising the shield above ground potential. Operation is simple and automatic. The operator enters the type of fault and the footage of cable on the reel using the new touch-screen user interface, then attaches the two ergonomic probe connectors to the cable with the open or short and a ground connector to the other affected conductor or shield. Once this is done, two interlock pushbuttons must be engaged by the operator to initiate the test, ensuring there is no accidental contact with high voltage. The FL-20A begins the test and quickly locates the defect and gives the footage from the top of the reel. The FL-20A cable fault locator can test a wide range of cable lengths and sizes. Metallic shorts in cables with loop resistances as low as 0.05 ohms (typical of short lengths of building wire and power cables) can be detected.
