His scoring aides are center Frank Allen (13.7), forward Jerry Rettig (13.4) and guard Bill Asimos (11.9) . In a Northern California road trip last week, Rettig scored 30 points In two consecutive games. Coach Fon John on's Pio- neers have a 10-9 season after a slow start. Forward Chuck Thomeczk j and guard Ken Leslie lead the USD scoring attack. Thome- czk took over the club's Indi- vidual scoring lead for th e fir t time this season with 207 points and an average of 10.9 while Leslie has 203 and 10.7. In starting berths along with Thomeczk and Leslie will be Ken Kettrick at the o t h e r guard, Lee Hammond at the other forward and Carl Hen- drickson at center. ~" Pioneers Face·\ Pasadena Five University o! San Diego makes its next-to-last basketball appearance of the season at home tonight. The Pioneers meet strong Pasadena College at 8 at San Diego High. Pasadena drubbed the Pio- neers, 80-42, in the first meet-I ing. The Crusaders are led by Jim Bond and Eric Pyle. Bond has averaged 18 points per game. Ken Leslie is the leading Pioneer scorer with a 12-point average.

The Pioneers, who have 11. 12-14 season mark, will travel to Pomona Friday night to meet Cal Poly of San Dimas and return to St. Augustine gym Saturday night to play host to Cal Baptist of River- side. USD defeated both ~lubs last month, topping Cal Baptist, 81- 43, and Cal Poly, 62-41. Bob Bland paced the Poets with 20 points. Ken Leslie and Chuck Thomeczk canned 20 and 18, respectively, for the Pio- neers. The Pioneers took the lead for the first time after 12 min- utes at 21-19 and held the lead just before Intermission when Whittier nudged ahead, 33-32. The lead see-sawed in the ~econd half with the Pioneers enjo?'ing a five point lead early, holding onto a 55-52 advantage .with nine minutes left and at 60-59 with four left. However Bland canned a field goal fo;, 1 the Poets to make it 61-60 then Thomeczk and Lee Hammonctl; fouled out and that \l'as all for USO. 1 This was the 14th victory against live losses for Whittier while USD's record is 12-13.
