And in very few cases will visitors have to experience anything other than total comfort. For years a visit to the Galápagos Islands has required travelers to go back to basics at best, but as Lauren Holmes discovered (page 86), this is no longer the case. This trend for luxury wilderness retreats stretches from one end of the Americas to the other (see our Top 10 American adventures on page 60). And it’s the same in Africa, where a fascinating visit to the huge archeological site at Lake Turkana in Kenya – home to many of modern man’s earliest ancestors – is surprisingly well accommodated.
