Martyrs Rowing

John Wiggins writes: The Wallingford Head of the River in November was a new dawn for the Martyrs Boat Club. Not one, but two crews raced in the aptly named St Edward King and Martyr over the two divisions, albeit relying on a number of people rowing twice. With a combined age of 290 (a fifth of which was the bow-man) the crew in the afternoon raced as Masters B – an event they won if only by dint of no opposition. They were however the fastest Masters crew on the water, but with the handicapping system applied, were second

to an even older Upper Thames crew. The younger boat was far too highly ranked due to recklessly winning too much as youths and had to compete in the open senior event but impressed with a top 25 placing overall. Both boats beat Sabrina (Shrewsbury School), the only other alumni boat in the competition. Racing in a howling gale and, at times, very rough water, watermanship was more highly prized than fitness – which played to their strengths – and with superb steering, they negotiated the course impressively.

Eyes Down Robert Asatryan ( Gosford Hill ),

Konstantinos Doxiadis ( St Catherine’s British School, Athens ), Martin Ho ( Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary, Hong Kong ) and Samyak Jain ( Birla, India ) concentrate hard at the Senior Team Maths Challenge in Oxford in November where they came seventh out of 32 – our best ranking in 10 years.

Ablaze with Colour Keen rower Hamish Roots OSE married Lucy in September and sent us this picture – we had to ask about the jacket: “The blazer is worn by people who took part in the 2011 or 2014 Zambezi rowing expeditions. The colours represent the Zambian flag; black, red, gold and green with a custom emblem relating to the various clubs involved in the expeditions. The Leander Club, for example, is represented by a pink hippo. Following a meeting with the ‘King of Barotseland” in the upper reaches of the Zambezi during the 2011 expedition, my blazer emblem sports the name ‘Royal Zambezi Sculling Club’. A number of us have them and wear them at Henley Royal Regatta - and at any event where we can get away with it, like weddings!” Congratulations to Hamish and Lucy – Hamish took many of the sports pictures in this issue.
