The palace, whicli is built in the then so prevalent Ilalian style, on a spacious seale, scrvcd once as residence for the Quecn-Powager Juliane Ma­ rie, and is now oceasionally occupied in Sum­ mer by the Royal family. The Palace gardens are considered to be the finest in Denmark, not only on accounl of the beauty of their site on the shore of the lovely Es r om lake, but also on accounl of the individual beauty of the trees in the park, and the many monu­ ments and statues dispersed aboul the grounds, many of tliese being masterpieces of art, many of tliem from the ehisel of the unforlunalc Wiedewell. As a conlrast to the beau-idcal, but curious enough to bo very remarkable, is the No rmans - dal (Nonvcgian vallery) where, surrounding a colossal pillar of granile, rudely hewn figures in sandstonc stand, grimly represenling the different coslumes of Norway and of the Farøc Islands. The villages of Nøddebo and S ø ­ l ys t on the shores of Esrom lake are the spots most worthy of being visited in the ncighbourhood of Fredensborg.
