In 1866 Copenhagen and a part of the Isle of Amager (Dragør and Kastrup) had a fleet of 468 merchant vessels of a total burden of 28,821 Tons. A greal advantagc the capilal has oblained by under- taking a great deal of the transactions formerly made via Hamburgh. The wh o le - s a l e me r c h a n t s form a society of themselves, represented by a comi- lee, whose duty it is to take care of the interests of commerce, and though not of any official nature its advice in affairs of commcrce it not seldom souglit by government. The mc r c a n t i l e a s s o c i a t i o n , which is of a more private nature, holds ils meetings in a room at the Exchange. — Nearly connected willi commerce are the three companies for marine insuranccs, whereof one is granled the olher are private. — To altend lo the interests of Ihc merchants the ma r i t i me - and c om­ me r c e t ri bunal was eslablished in 1862.
