National Insurance Number

NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER/MATRICULE

WHAT IS A NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER or MATRICULE? If you have the right to live, work or study in Luxembourg, you will get issued with a unique 13-digit identification number (or matricule). Matricule is your personal account number, which is also your tax identification number (TIN) and national insurance number and acts as a reference number for the whole social security system. It is made up of your date of birth in reverse plus five digits (e.g. 1985 01 05 12345). This number does not change even if you temporarily leave Luxembourg, marry, register as a civil partner, change your name etc. HOW DO YOU GET IT? + If you are a non-EU citizen, matricule will be assigned to you during preliminary immigration stage, when your application is being processed by the ministry of foreign affairs, before you enter the country. + EU citizens receive matricule during their first registration in Luxembourg or when enrolled by CCSS. SOCIAL SECURITY CARD + Luxembourg has a two-sided social security card: national side, which confers entitlement to coverage for healthcare, maternity, dependency care and others; and EU side, which confers entitlement to emergency and immediately necessary care during a temporary stay in a member country of EU, EEA, and Switzerland.

+ Persons enrolled for social security, as main insured or co-insured (dependent on the main insured person), are entitled to a card. The card is issued free of charge for the person concerned. + The card is delivered within three weeks. It is valid for a limited period, depending on the type of enrolment. In principle, the card is automatically renewed two months before it expires. If the card is not delivered within this time, a new one must be ordered on the CCSS website. + In case of emergency, an insured person may request a temporary replacement certificate from CNS, which will be delivered immediately and is valid for no more than three months.
