Reaching SUCCESS

Dr. Todd Hernandez, NSCC President Our mission at Northwest State Community College is to serve by providing access to excellent and affordable education, training and services that will improve the lives of individuals and strengthen communities. We are resolute in upholding our mission, vision and values to make northwest Ohio the best place to live, work and prosper. Every day, I see our learners developing their skills at Northwest State through our great hands-on education and training. I’m so proud of their achievements, and I marvel at how they keep reaching greater heights. It is a privilege to work at a place where we can provide this valuable service to our community -- the gift of a great education, and the many opportunities it can provide.

Dr. Todd Hernandez, NSCC President

Peter Beck, CEO of Automatic Feed Speaking as both a NSCC Foundation representative and a community business leader, I see first-hand the power of an NSCC education on a regular basis. I believe lives are transformed for the better, greater heights can be achieved, businesses benefit from the skilled workforce, and communities are strengthened. All as a result of an NSCC education. I also have the honor of representing the NSCC Foundation, working with individuals, businesses and organizations to raise the needed dollars to invest in our future -- our students. Raising funds during a pandemic isn’t easy, but our board continues to be community-focused and fiscally sound in its approach. Our students are our future, and investing in NSCC scholarships is one of the smartest investments we can make.

Virtual Reception

The Northwest State Community College Foundation proudly awarded $843,000 in scholarships to 278 students from the region. The total dollars awarded shatters last year ’s record totals, offering needed financial help to students through the generosity of donors to the NSCC Foundation. On Thursday, April 15th, the College premiered a virtual reception, to celebrate the accomplishments of the students and offer gratitude for the support of local donors. Ron Coles, NSCC Alumni Association President, provided the donor perspective, noting “A Northwest State education counts and will forever be life-changing.” Pamela Stephey, a 2020 NSCC Phlebotomy graduate currently working to complete her Medical Assisting degree, and a Phlebotomist at ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, provided the student perspective. “I hope one day I will also be able to help struggling students reach their goals in higher education by assisting them in the same way (donors) are helping me today,” she said. Stephey is a Francis O. Fackler Scholarship recipient.

50th Anniversary COVID-19 may have delayed the larger-scale celebration of our 50 years of service, but NSCC was still able to hold its anniversary event in 2021. Under a large tent, a two-day celebration included a formal introduction of our 8th President, Dr. Todd Hernandez, a send off for our outgoing 7th President, Dr. Michael Thomson, and a recognition of our first graduating class. The weekend provided perfect weather for the occasion, and allowed all guests to reflect fondly on their favorite memories while at Four County Technical Institute, Northwest Technical College, and/or Northwest State Community College.

Farewell Dr. Michael Thomson! (Outgoing 7th President)

First Graduating Class of 1971

Reaching CELEBRATION

The Northwest State Community College Foundation recently hosted its 11th annual Green Carpet Event, in a partially in-person, partially virtual format. All proceeds raised from the event will go directly to student scholarships. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2021 “Making a Difference Awards,” which were created by the NSCC Foundation as a way to recognize and celebrate individuals, businesses and organizations in the six-county area committed to improving their communities. This year ’s recipients were Roy Norman (Farm Bureau Defiance, Fulton, Henry & Williams Counties), Terry Henricks (Ford and Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram), and Dan Yahraus (Bryan Chamber).

“The Green Carpet Event and the Making a Difference Awards celebrate hard work, community support and giving. We work year- round to raise awareness and needed funds for student scholarships, and this event is a critical piece of those efforts. Within a month’s time, we have hosted the Scholarship Awards Night, our spring Commencement, and now the Green Carpet Event. We are blessed to work in a community where people want to help make a difference for others.” — Robbin Wilcox, Executive Director NSCC Foundation

Custom Training Solutions

The CTS division of Northwest State Community College is committed to providing both individuals and organizations a competitive advantage through hands-on learning about the latest tools, techniques and best practices in all industries. CTS provides training and consultative solutions to companies in the areas of advanced manufacturing, computer applications and programming, safety and leadership, industrial automation and maintenance. CTS is a leader in the development and implementation of innovative learning programs for K-12 students. In a collaborative effort with Putnam County Economic Development and Putnam County Job & Family Services the first northwest Ohio State Registered High-School Pre-Apprenticeship program was launched for the 2021-2022 school year. CTS has the unique ability to transport industrial trainers to any local K-12, community agencies, and local businesses in order to provide both career exploration and technical skills training leading to in-demand Industry Recognized Credentials. With the support of faculty and the NSCC STEM department, CTS works with many local organizations to upskill individuals and assist in obtaining employment. Currently, NSCC sponsors 24 companies with a total of 12 registered apprenticeship programs. Being a sponsor for companies in Northwest Ohio allows manufacturing employers that do not have the resources or bandwidth to sponsor their own programs to create and implement Registered Apprenticeship Programs leaving the paperwork and responsibility with Northwest State. Having this capability and experience only adds to the legitimacy of being recognized as a Standards Recognition Entity. For more information on CTS, visit TrainwithCTS.com. Weiland Chase has utilized an apprentice programwith NSCC for over 50 years. As we install new automated equipment on the manufacturing floor our maintenance technicians need to be constantly upskilled. CTS delivers the training that compliments the Weiland Chase formal apprentice program. — Michael Tisovic- Plant Manager “ ”

Working together as a Foundation Board and with our many donors it is critical for us to be able to share the message of our commitment to the students attending NSCC. Raising dollars ($925,620.00) locally for our students demonstrates to them our commitment to their success. When we invest in our students we are investing in our community. We would not be where we are if not for our Donors and for that we are extremely grateful.“ — Robbin Wilcox Executive Director, NSCC Foundation
