Peggy Agerton, execu- tive assistant for Academic Services/Educational Devel- opment Center and a USD employee since 1975, and Manuel Hernandez , a Physical Plant carpenter who has worked at the Uni- versity since 1958, shared the top award. Named runners-up were Bill Hall, a library assist- ant, and Greg Modugno, a cook for Food Service's ca- tering department. The honorees were se- lected on the basis of job competence, initiative, rela- tions with others and exem- . plification of the Univer- sity's values. Also honored at the picnic was Dr. Jack Pope, direc- tor ofAcademic Computing, who was named Adminis- trator of the Year by the Staff Employees Association. Academic Services Dean Patricia Watson, who nominated Agerton for the award, wrote on the nomina- tion form, "I know of no other staff member who has contributed as much to the good of the University." In addition to her office duties, Agerton has been elected president of the Staff Em- ployees Association six

times and served as a mem- ber of the University Bene- fits Committee and the Staff Classification Advisory Committee. "I receive a lot of satisfac- tion from my job," Agerton says. James Beck , Physical Plant's manager of building maintenance, and John Ze- terberg, Physical Plant di- rector, described Hernandez on the nomination form as a va lued employee. " His cheerful cooperation, coup- led with superior initiative and reliability have made him a valued employee of Physical Plant," they wrote. "Because of his eagerness to help others Manuel is always in demand by personnel throughout the USD com- munity." Hall says he was surprised to find himself one of the runners-up. 'Tm real flat- tered to be recognized," says the 1973 USD graduate, who has worked at the li- brary since 1974. Hall's boss, University Li- brarian Marian Holle- man, wrote that Hall " is without doubt one of the best public relations advo- cates the library has. He is a lways gracious with stu- dents, faculty and in an- swer'ing the phone." Modugno has worked for Food Service since 1976. His supervisor, Rudy Spano, director of food service. de- scribed Modugno as some- one who reflects USD's caring atmosphere. "In a po- sition that redefines the word pressure Greg is a l- ways even tern pered and has a smile," Spano wrote. "It 's nice to be recog- nized," says Modugno. "I en- joy my job here because of the creativity and freedom I'm allowed. I also know a lot of people around campus." Michael Kearney, di- rector of trusts and estates, has been named acting vice president for university rela- tions, according to Presi- dent Author E. Hughes. Kearney fills the vacancy created when Dr. William L. Pickett accepted the presidency of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. A nationwide search is under way to find a perma- nent replacement for Dr. Pickett. ••••• Dr. Joan Anderson, as- sociate professor of eco- nomics, received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend a six- week summer seminar in South America. The grant will help her develop a course on Latin American business for USD's year-old master's degree program in international business. Dr. Thomas Kanne- man has been appointed di- rec tor of USD's new electrical engineering pro- gram which will be inaugu- rated fall semester. Dr. Kanneman formerly was professor of electronics and computer engineering tech- nology at Arizona State Uni- versity. *****
