'95-96 PROSPECTUS The 1995-96 season will
begin with the most experienced team that we have had in several years. With our top five players returning and the addition of two veteran transfer students and two --F-ra_n_k_C_a-te-s~ excellent freshmen, we are look- ing for a strong showing this year. Senior and returning # l player Jerramy Hainline is looking for his finest year in a very distinguished college career. Senior Matt Freeman, last year's #2 man, offers experi– ence and solid play. A trio ofjuniors, Ryan Semro, Hee Wood and Aaron Shannahan, give the team exceptional depth. Those expected to challenge the topplayers for spots includejunior LarryCampbell, and sophomores Kevin Rodgers and Erik Jacobsen. Transfer students Brian Marchiori and Tony Snoey, both juniors, are solid players who should give the teamquality, steady play. Freshmen Keshav Misra and Steve Tolpa are two excep– tional high school standouts who will be looking for playing time. The University ofSan Diego participates in NCAA Division I and is a member of the West Coast Conference (WCC) . The conference championship will be played on the Bayonet course at Fort Ord, California (near Monterey) on April l & 2, 1996. The Toreros will host the USO/ Ashworth Invitational on March 11 & 12, 1996 at the EastLake Country Club. The West Coast Conference (WCC) con– sists of: Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary's College, University of San Diego, University ofSan Francisco and SantaClara University. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION The University of San Diego men's golf program presently offers scholarship assistance. Financial aid is available to any incoming student, and many of our athletes at the University are currently on financial aid. For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office or Head Coach Frank Cates. ~~~ GOLF FACILITIES~~~ The University of San Diego golf team is very fortunate to have several fine golf courses available for play and practice. Del Mar Country Club The lush,Joe Lee-designed DelMar Country Club, located in Rancho Santa Fe, is one of Southern California's finest. The 6,950 yard course winds through the natural terrain of its canyon and valley locale. A stream winds its way thr01.:gh the course and its fairways are bent grass. Rating/Slope: 74.4/1 33 EastLake Country Club Located in the rolling hills of Otay Mesa, EastLake Country Club is a fine 6,600 yard course in the new EastLake community. The Ted Robinson designed course has rolling fairways, excellent greens, several lakes and rock formations. Rating/slope: 70.0/ 116 Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club CarmelMountain RanchCountry Club is awell manicured course with panoramic mountain and valley views, dramatic barrancas, running streams and natural boulder formations. There are elevated tees and no parallel fairways. Rated among the top 20 public golf courses in Cali fornia. Rating/S lope: 72.9/ I36 Four Seasons Resort - Aviara The challenging 7,007-yard layout wi nds through rolling valleys and overlooks the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife preserve. Both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have named the Arnold Palmer designed Aviara as one of the best new resort courses in the country. Rating/Slope: 74.9/1 4 1 Bear Creek Golf Club This Jack Nicklaus course in Murietta against the rolling countryside of Temecula Valley is long and requires exacting shots. From tournament tees the course plays 7,024 yards and features multilevel greens, deep pot bunkers and several lakes and streams. It has a rating of 75.4. following fine JC Resorts courses: Rancho Bernardo Inn, West Course Designed by William Bell , with meandering streams that come into play on ten holes. Rating/Slope: 70.6/ 122 Mt. Woodson Country Club A true "one of a kind" golf course. A target-style design that captures the rugged natural setting of the Ramona Valley. Rating/slope: 68.8/ 130 Twin Oaks Golf Course A Ted Robinson des ign that is demanding but fair. Three signature water holes surrounding a protected wildlife habitat. Rating/S lope: 7 1.2/1 24. Temecula Creek Inn Nestled in the heart of the Southern California wine country, north of San Diego. A challenging 27 holes of champi– onship golf. Rating/Slope: From 7 1.8/ I23 to 72.6/1 30. Oaks North Golf Club A 27-hole Ted Robinson executive layout. Excellent to develop a short game. Rating/Slope: 55 .8/86 to 56.8/88. The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic university on a 180-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. This campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University' s location - just ten minutes from down– town San Diego and conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas of San Diego, as well as rail, bus, and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experienc– ing a period of record growth and attendance. Under– graduate enrollment currently stands at just over 3,900 students. Graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to just over 6,400 students. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of USD students comes from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students from 24 foreign countries can also be found in attendance at USD. Recreation and athletic activities are expand– ing rapidly and include activities such as sailing, yoga, karate, surfing, modern dance , bowling and ballet. Intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, basket– ball, crew, cross country, football, tennis and golf.
