IN HIS OWNWORDS: DUSTIN BOQUET BULL RIDER MAKING HEADWAY IN STANDINGS

1/4 page color ad $457 (12mth b/w rate) W hen I was about 11 or 12, one of my buddies – he doesn’t ride anymore, he just amateur rodeoed – toldme one day, “You’d probably be all right at riding bulls, since you ride horses all the time.” I was like, shoot, I guess I’ll give it a try. I started off in the steer riding. I think I rode my first three out of four at this little, buckle-series deal. I won a buckle. After that I was hooked. I was pretty-dang nervous. Every once in a while, I still get nervous, but I block it out. You just learn how to go along with it. Sometimes you draw the one that everybody rides, so you get nervous about it because you have to stay on that son of a buck, because the one that throws everyone off has a trick to him. It ain’t a bad nervous, you’re just a little nervous that you don’t want to fall off. I grew up around horses because my grandpa owned a few cows and always had horses. Heck, I’ve been riding horses since I could walk. But I’ve never competed in bareback riding or saddle bronc riding. Oh, no, I ain’t getting on those things. I never did like a regular horse that bucked, why am I going to get on one that I knowwould buck? I like watching it, but I don’t want to do it. I didn’t ride as good as I do now. Everything started clicking for me about two years ago. I started out pretty good three years ago, but then I went and broke my leg. That put me out nine months. The bull came out backwards and I caught my leg on the gate, twisted it backwards. I broke my tibia. Dustin Boquet is having the best season of his career. After finishing 50th in last season’s bull riding world standings (his best finish), Boquet was sitting in fifth place in the 2018 RAM PRCA World Standings with $57,813 (nearly double what he won last season). The 24-year-old from Bourg, La., now lives in Athens, Texas.

So, then I had to come back and do it all over again. This year has been outstanding, it’s been really good tome. I don’t knowwhat I’mdoing different, I’m just kind of not thinking about it toomuch. I’m just going with the flow, trying to stay on as many as I can. Everybody always tells me to stay on as many as you can and they are going to pay you. That’s what I’ve been trying to do, and it hasn’t been treating me too bad. With an injury like I suffered, I knew I was going to see if I still wanted to ride bulls or not. But every day I thought about it. I hated sitting up in that room. This life is awesome that we live. There’s no other job really where you can go out and travel andmeet people that turn into family for you because you see them all the time. We live with thempretty much for three months when we’re out there for the summer. It surely is a blessing.

PSN- Pro Rodeo Sports New June 2018 I’ve got $57,000 won so far this year. I try not to think about it toomuch. I set some goals at the beginning of the year, and I’ve reached a few of them. I set more, so I’m going to keep going with it. Hopefully, it stays good. Hopefully, nothing will change. I set some small goals at first, and I’ve got some bigger ones set. You’ve got to hit the small ones to get to the big ones. SanAntonio has beenmy biggest payout this year. It got me up there where I’m at. All together, I won about $21,000. It was fun. Everybody toldme that’s the place you want to ride good. It’s good to be sitting in the Top 5 right now going into the summer run. You’re not worried about it. Like everybody else, you’re still shooting for that No. 1 spot at the end of the year.

You think about it for sure.We all think about it, though you try not to. But they do have somemoney up for grabs once you get to theWrangler National Finals Rodeo. A guy could go in there $100,000 ahead and you could still catch him. It just depends how good you ride and how good he rides when you get there.

GRILLE COWBOY

JEFF FLENNIKENmight be in the early stages of his ProRodeo career, but he’s already well traveled. Ranked second among team roping headers in the PRCA Resistol Rookie Standings with $6,249 as of May 17, Flenniken, who turns 22 June 1, has found a veteran heeler to partner with and is reliant on his religious faith to guide him toward a fruitful career.

WITH NICK CICERE PSN

You’re ranked second among rookie headers. How’s your rookie season been for you, so far? Jeff: It’s been good. I kind of switched around partners a little bit. I started out with Bucky Campbell and we did all right, but we decided to do something different, so I started roping with Jake Minor. What’s it been like roping with an accomplished heeler like Jake? Jeff: It’s been pretty cool actually. It’s pretty exciting to get to rope with someone who’s made the NFR twice, when I’m just starting. What kinds of things have you picked up from Jake in your time roping together? Jeff: He’s pretty calm and doesn’t get worked up when we don’t do too well. He stays level. That’s good for me to be around him, to keep my head straight and not get too down. He’s pretty good about that. How cool was it for you to qualify for the Permit Members Challenge in Las Vegas last December and then win it? Jeff: It was really cool because I grew up with Wyatt Hansen and we both qualified. We didn’t rope together at any ProRodeos last year, but we grew up together in California and then I moved to Idaho. When we both qualified, I texted him, saying, “Hey, do you want to rope?” He said yes. It was just pretty cool to get to win it with him. When did you move to Idaho? Jeff: When I was about 12. So, having moved to Caldwell when you were still a kid, was the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo a big deal when you were growing up?

Jeff: Yeah. Huge thing. This last year was the first I got to rope in it and it was awesome. I made the short round and my whole family was there to watch me. All the people I went to school with around here came and watched me, and I ended up placing fourth. Was rodeo a family thing or was it something you picked up on your own? Jeff: My dad always roped and my grandpa roped. It’s always just been kind of the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. I never played any other sports or anything, I just roped. When did you know that rodeo was something you wanted to pursue? Jeff: I was about 14 years old and I went to Winnemucca, Nev., for a roping event, and I had never won a saddle before then. I really wanted to win one, and I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t. I won three saddles that weekend, and that’s when I knew what I wanted to do. On your Facebook page, you call yourself “A Christian that ropes.” How important is your faith to you?

Jeff: Oh yeah, it’s way more important to me than roping. I like to have peace. I don’t think there is any way you can make it without God. Whatever you do in life, you can’t make it without him. Do you do anything for work outside of rodeo? Jeff: My grandpa has a ranch and he’s helped me get my herd started. I run some cows of my own and I help him with his cows when I’m home. Is there any rodeo athlete that you grew up idolizing? Jeff: Junior Nogueira is my favorite. When he first came to the United States, he came to my grandpa’s place with

Jake Barnes. We started to get to know each other and he started coming every year. I went and hung out with him in Texas for a few weeks, and we became really good friends. Obviously, you’re still very early in your rodeo career, but down the road, what do you hope to accomplish before it’s all said and done? Jeff: I hope to make the NFR just like everyone else. I hope to make it a few times. Do you have a favorite movie? Jeff: I like Robin Hood. The one with Russell Crowe. Who’s your favorite artist? Jeff: I like Mercy Me, and a little Eminem, too.

T hree-time world champion Fritz Truan left his successful rodeo career to join the Marines in 1942. Just like in rodeo, Fritz climbed the ranks, making sergeant while deployed in the South Pacific. During the five-week Battle of Iwo Jima, Truan led his men on an uphill charge where he was killed by machine-gun fire – one of 7,000 Americans and an estimated 20,000 Japanese killed during the battle. Truan’s story inspired the 1949 film “The Sands of Iwo Jima,” starring John Wayne. Now, 73 years after his death, Truan is remembered for his success in the arena and selfless sacrifice in serving his country. Born in Seeley, Calif., Nov. 12, 1915, Fritz and his brother, Bill, were the only support for their mother and 10 sisters when their father died. Truan started competing in rodeo in the early 1930s and joined the Cowboys’ Turtle Association in 1936. He went on to win the saddle bronc riding at Madison Square Garden and won his first world title in 1939. The following year, he won the saddle bronc riding world championship again and claimed the all-around. During his rodeo career, Hell’s Angel was considered by many to be the greatest bucking horse in the history of rodeo and nearly impossible to ride. Truan covered him five out of the seven times their paths crossed. Truan went on to win the coveted Sam Jackson Trophy at the 1941 Pendleton (Ore.) Round-up. Truan’s winnings averaged about $400 per week ($7,209 in 2018 dollars), but he traded it all in when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Heeding the Call Three-time world champ died at Iwo Jima

Truan enlisted on Dec. 7, 1942 – one week after marrying Norma Holmes, a trick rider with Gene Autry’s Flying A Rodeo Company. While on active duty in Hawaii, Truan organized an all-service rodeo to benefit wounded soldiers. In 1943, he was wounded on Tarawa Atoll but bounced back to win the Hawaiian bronc riding championship. Not much set Truan aside from his fellow soldiers, except for a gold button-shaped pin about the size of a nickel with the initials “CTA” engraved with an image of a turtle. Truan took a month of leave in 1944 to reunite with his wife and compete at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days and in Boulder, Colo. On Feb. 28, 1945, Truan led a charge up Hill 382 in a battlespace known as the Meatgrinder, where he was killed in action, about six months before the war ended. Truan was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1995.

Steer wrestler Shane Hadley, 26, was injured May 12 while competing at the Mineral Wells (Texas) Rodeo. During Hadley’s run, the steer cut in front of Hadley’s horse and the animals got tangled up. The horse stumbled to the ground with Hadley aboard. Hadley was injured when the horse fell. Hadley was airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. As of May 18, Hadley was in the intensive care unit and was listed in critical-but-stable condition, said Shiloh Napp, Shane’s older sister. A GoFundMe page has been set up for Hadley to help offset medical expenses. The link is at www.gofundme. com/5jln6nc. Hadley lives in Stephenville, Texas. Fun on tap at Cheyenne Frontier Days in July Organizers of Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days are busy getting ready for a fantastic 122nd year, and they’ve announced details for their opening-day festivities at this year’s “Daddy of ’em All.” The Cheyenne Frontier Days Opening Day Celebration will take place July 20, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. (MT). The first 100 people through the front gate will receive a free carnival armband for later in the week.

A scavenger hunt will take place during the day with a grand prize package valued at $3,000 for the winner. It includes two VIP passes to all the Frontier Nights concert performances. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo is scheduled for July 21-29. Wyoming State High School Rodeo Finals coming to Gillette Cam-Plex in Gillette, Wyo., is set to host the Wyoming High School State Finals Rodeo in 2019 and 2020, and the facility welcomed a new general manager. At the Campbell County Public Land Board meeting recently, marketing manager Janell Paris made the announcement as she talked about upcoming events at the facility. Dates for the state finals rodeo will be June 3-8 in 2019 and June 1-7 in 2020. Cam-Plex in Gillette was chosen over the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs and the Wyoming State Fairgrounds in Douglas. The Wyoming High School Rodeo Association is considering a multisite rotation for future state finals competitions. The Cam-Plex staff had debated on whether or not to submit a bid for the rodeo, Paris told the board, because the requested dates were not available at Cam-Plex due to previously scheduled events. Though they were unable to accommodate the requested dates, the Cam-Plex was still successful in its bid. The meeting was also the first for new general manager Jeff Esposito, who began his duties at Cam-Plex on May 7. He and his family are moving from Erie, Pa., where he worked at the Bayfront Convention Center. This year’s Wyoming High School State Finals Rodeo is scheduled for June 4-10 in Rock Springs. Woodward Elks Rodeo changes dates This year, to create an event that is more comfortable for fans coming to watch the top PRCA cowboys and cowgirls, the 88th Woodward (Okla.) Elks Rodeo Committee has changed the date of the event. For the last several decades the rodeo was held in late July. This year, the rodeo is set for June 6-9 in the Crystal Beach Arena. Nothing else has changed about the rodeo, said Kevin Kornele with the Woodward Elks Rodeo Committee. “It has got the same great shows and events,” Kornele said in the May 13 edition of the Woodward News . “We also will have the cattle drive this year on June 5, and that is always something that really sets the tone for the rodeo.” In addition to the top competitors, fans will get to experience some of the best in entertainment, Kornele said. That includes bullfighters Nate Jestes and Chuck Swisher, barrelman and clown Justin Rumford, Cowgirl Sweatheart’s Trick Riding, a stagecoach from Scott Smith Stagecoach Ranch, and the nightly honoring of the American Flag where skydiver Bobby Reid will land in the arena with the flag. Greeley foundation awards scholarships More than 80 applications were submitted from students across Weld County, Colo., high schools for a chance to be considered for a Greeley Stampede Foundation scholarship. Applications were submitted from all over Weld County, creating a com- petitive selection process.

“Every year, members of the Greeley Stampede Foundation are in awe of the amount of hard work and dedication that Weld students embody,” said Bob Hinderaker, scholarship chairman of the Greeley Stampede Foundation in a press release. “To show our appreciation and support, the students will be recognized at several Stampede events including the Stampede Kickoff Luncheon on June 1 and the July 1 PRCA rodeo.” Recipients were selected based on their outstanding academic results, school involvement, leadership in the community and plans to further their education. The 2018 Greeley Stampede Foundation High School Academic Scholarship recipients totaled 23 and they represented 11 Weld County high schools. More than $57,000 will be awarded to students for the 2018-19 academic year. The Stampede Foundation is a nonprofit organization formed to support continuing education for Weld County students. Since beginning the program, the Stampede Foundation has awarded more than $440,000 in scholarships. North Dakota Cowboy HOF adds inductees Legendary rodeo saddle maker and former PRCA competitor Dave Dahl of Fort Pierre, S.D., will be inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame at Tjaden Terrace in Medora, June 16. The class also includes bareback rider Larry Sandvik, a 12-time quali- fier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and saddle bronc rider Nevada Jorgenson.

Bull rider Cole Melancon refused to let injury crumble his confidence. Now back to netted a win at Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo after an 89-point ride on Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo’s Chigger full health, Melancon

Back at full health, Melancon wins Guymon

BY NICK CICERE O ver the past year, bull rider Cole Melancon has felt the entirety of the rodeo spectrum. At his peak, Melancon qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December, even splitting the win in Round 3 with eventual world champion Sage Kimzey. In the 24-year-old’s third year in the PRCA, Melancon finished the 2017 season sixth in the world standings with more than $200,000 earned. On the surface, everything appeared to be moving in the Texas cowboy’s direction. Not everything was as it seemed. Melancon had been wincing with the pain of a herniated disc in his back for a majority of the past season, and in January, the longstanding suffering became severe enough that he opted for surgery. At the Guymon (Okla.)

Pioneer Days Rodeo, Melancon proved his health is no longer a concern. Atop Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo’s Chigger, Melancon took advantage of the one-go for 89 points. The win netted Melancon $3,384, and a renewed sense of purpose. “It feels pretty great,” said Melancon, who was in 28th in the 2018 RAMPRCAWorld Standings as of May 17. “I hadn’t won anything in a while, missing two months being out after
